Very good video. I would have liked to see you use the cheap flaring tool as well as the expensive one, since most hobby mechanics like myself won't be able to justify the cost of the more expensive one.

You know if you can take out factory lines that are all curly cued around and replace them with simple straight lines? I'll be putting a v8 in my s10 soon and I'm looking for ways to get as mich hand room as I can.

I hope you made a bracket of some kind to keep that ppv form vibrating other wise you will have another leak from a cracked line.

When you install the new lines, do you need to re-bleed the brakes? What about the master cylinder? Can you install the lines without draining the fluid?
@bleepinjeep
@bleepinjeep 6 лет назад
anytime fluid leaks out, there is likely air coming in... so yes, you should always bleed the system until no more bubbles are coming out.
@MovieMakerZT
@MovieMakerZT 6 лет назад
Gotcha. Does the master cylinder need to be bled, or can I just bleed at the wheels? I don't want to take the master cylinder off, but have to replace some lines.

bleed the brakes at all 4 wheels. I believe we have a couple videos on bleeding brakes!

That is a combination valve, not a proportioning valve.

My 1986 F150 is on my mechanic hoist as I speak. The line is broken very near the right rear wheel. The whole line must be replaced $40. Labour cost is $160. I would never attempt this. I don't have the tools, skills nor patience. How much for the required tools and lines? I think I made the correct decision my taking it in to a mechanic with a hoist. I've watched all brake line jobs on RU-vid. I consider myself a fair DIY guy, but a brake line job is a bridge to far for me. Good luck. David Allberta

It's actually pretty easy. You can even buy premade straight lines with the flares and fittings already attached. You just buy them in the right length and then bend them where needed. Quite easy on the ones that just run along frame rails, a little trickier on the shorter one like he is bending here. Where it gets interesting is when you have to bleed the wheel cylinders. If you are lucky and the bleeders aren't rusted in its not too bad, but if you start breaking the bleeders off it's a whole new can of worms! Lol.

For some reason years back, I was told ALL hydraulic brake lines had to be made from steel and double flared. At that time the reason was that other materials would develop cracks from vibrations. Is this still true with today's brake line engineering standards DOT etc.?

Or you just remove the entire factory line and duplicate it! Why bunch of extra crap and guess and check? The factory did it right the first time.. pull the entire line one at a time duplicate them and reinstall them one at a time.. that said.. a complete kit is worth the minor cost increase which will actually be cheaper long term if you have to buy all the tools to get started. $150-200 you can get complete kits that include everything except valves which can be added as needed. Also really this video should’ve started with replacing the master which I can see you’ve already replaced with the WJ kit from the looks of it. But seriously.. there is no guessing or measuring just pull the factory lines start with an extra 12” or so and start duplicating it. The only thing you need to do is one practice run in a small scrap piece to learn how the bend effects the length.
