CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Dracula (Gary Oldman) welcomes Jonathan (Keanu Reeves) inside his castle and tells him that he "never drinks wine."
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on Bram Stoker's classic 1897 novel, this film from Francis Ford Coppola and screenwriter James Victor Hart offers a full-blooded portrait of the immortal Transylvanian vampire. The major departure from Stoker is one of motivation as Count Dracula (Gary Oldman) is motivated more by romance than by bloodlust. He punctures the necks as a means of avenging the death of his wife in the 15th century, and when he comes to London, it is specifically to meet heroine Mina Harker (Winona Ryder), the living image of his late wife (Ryder plays a dual role, as do several of her costars). Anthony Hopkins is obsessed vampire hunter Van Helsing, while Keanu Reeves takes on the role of Jonathan Harker, and Tom Waits plays bug-eating Renfield. Bram Stoker's Dracula was the winner of three Academy Awards.

Since Dracula apparently had no servants, I can picture him frantically cooking Harker’s chicken dinner, periodically looking out the window as Harker’s stagecoach races closer and closer to the castle.

I think the inference was something more sinister. He didn't prepare that meal, he wouldn't even keep food because he has no need. I think he merely swooped out into the night and found the closest home, killed whoever residence there and took whatever they were preparing and brought it back. So Harker was eating a meal from a family that Dracula had just killed.

Michael Straub For me too ! This is the version in which Dracula can and may show human feelings ‼️ Keanu Reeves and Wyona Ryder as well as the female playwomen make the cast a feast for the eyes of the senses ! 🗣 I consider the film adaptation with Frank Langella to be one of the best !Where to get 🧛 - in Dracula ❗️ Frank Langella was more handsome and more charismatic and taller to play the role, of a lover ❗️

Yes it's a badass line, but the movie can't take credit for it - it's actually taken straight from the book. "We Dracul have a right to be proud, for in our veins flows the blood of many brave races who fought as the lion fights. Here is a whirlpool of European races; the Ugric from Iceland with the fighting spirit which Thor and Wodin gave them; the Berserkers who fell on the seaboards of Europe, till the people thought that the werewolves themselves had come; the Huns, whose warlike fury swept the earth like a living flame, till the dying people swore that in their veins must run the blood of witches who had mated with the devils in the desert. Fools! What devil or witch was ever so great as Attila, whose blood is in these veins? The Dracul with their heart's blood, their brains, and their swords - we boast these glories, for our spirit would not brook that we were not free!"

I actually think Keanu by default is perfect for the roll of Johnathan. I find that the character in the book is like a plank of wood much like Keanu is in this movie.

Yes well that's kind of the whole point of his character - he's an ordinary Joe, a plain law clerk, who finds himself caught up in a very un-ordinary situation. I actually think that Keanu's stunned deer-in-the-headlights acting here is appropriate for the role

I actually found book Johnathan very interesting. He's an early depiction of a male character who actually loves his wife and considers her an equal, and is sexually assaulted and traumatized, but he isn't criticized for unmanliness but is still treated as the hero. This is rare even today.
@GuineaPigEveryday
@GuineaPigEveryday Год назад
@@chooseyourpoison5105 i mean just because its an everyday man, common joe, to signify the insanity of his situation, doesn't mean an actor can't still make a performance of it. I think even in Nosferatu, there was more of an interest since Jonathan is boastful and a bit naive, just going there for the money and not believing the tall tales until he is slowly swept up in the mysticism. The stark difference in acting between Gary Oldman and Keanu is just incredibly hard to ignore, i feel bad for Keanu, I mean he was a studio stand-in, with his big hits being mostly two action movies, whose main protagonist is flat, and one comedic movie where his character also requires little performance. He was stuck between a rock and a hard place, not only having to learn a classical British accent for the first time but also being suddenly presented with the highest that Hollywood had to offer, pure theatrical high-class actors. Keanu is a nice guy and a cool actor, but he's not a brilliant actor, and he remains one of the few things that people still heavily criticise about this movie and which to many kind of hinders it from being timeless.

As much as I'll always love the Lugosi version, this is my personal favorite Dracula movie and my favorite portrayal of the Count himself. Some might say he looks silly in parts of the movie or that the romance and humanity they gave him go against the idea of the character and lessen his villainy, but he still maintains a wonderfully creepy and intriguing presence and I think he's the rare monster that actually became even scarier when they added a sympathetic angle. Love is one of the most celebrated, deified and relatable emotions we have and yet it's also what drove Dracula to become the monster he is and to do the seemingly unnatural things he does. This Dracula doesn't just show the horrors that the mysterious, unrelatable Other is capable of. He shows the horrors that we and our own most cherished human emotions are capable of.

As indulgent as Coppola can be, his instincts are so often spot-on. The silent movie and Expressionism effects he picked for this movie are completely whackaloon idiosyncratic and anachronistic but they work magnificently. You say to yourself "This can't possibly work" and then you see it and go "How did he KNOW to do that?!" Von Trier's kinda the same way: unbeatable intuition.

Such a classic and legendary film this is with a perfect storyline, soundtrack, cast, action as well as emotion. A film that is ageless, way ahead of its time, and even with age is still perfect. A film that captured Dracula completely and perfectly from the original with another master performance by the legendary Gary Oldman who just leads it fantastically alongside carries it with an iconic as well as unforgettable performance (like he always does) along with Anthony Hopkins, but literally especially when you have Gary Oldman, who always goes above & beyond sealing your movie to be one of the greats and of course a young Keanu all nailing their performances, directed by the legendary Francis Ford Coppola with another legendary unforgettable masterpiece film.
