Gary Oldman captured so many aspects of Dracula. The fearsome warrior, the decadent old vampire lord, the handsome young nobleman, the wolf form, the bat form, etc. He truly seemed like an all-powerful supernatural creature, something to be terrified of. I think Dracula was his best role.
I don't think so. I think he wasn't very good as he played Dracula too melodramatically (Oldman said himself that he isn't very happy with his performance). And Mina, btw, was NEVER a lover or reincarnated wife of Dracula in the original book. That was completely made up for the movie, and it actually worsened the story in my opinion because it didn't make much sense. In the novel, she is merely his victim. There are quite a few other significant changes as well which is ironic considering that the movie is called "Bram Stoker's Dracula".
@@decimustv4257yeah why people think this is a credible adaption is beyond comprehension. The only thing that resembles the book is in the title. Bram Stoker would roll in his grave. The closest to the book is a 1977 BBC version with Louis Jourdan.
@@decimustv4257 I disagree. I think Oldman did a great job as Dracula in all his forms. And the twist with Mina did in my opinion make the movie exceptional. I think it shows in a beautiful way that love defeats darkness. For example when Dracula don't want to condemn Mina and when Van Helsing realize that "they have all become Gods madmen". The mood in the movie is also unlike anything I have ever seen and the music does add a layer of atmosphere to the move that is beyond exceptional. I admit to being biased because when I first watched the move back in 92 or 93 I have never read the novel , and while I agree with you that the name of the movie could have been a bit different I still think that by using it, people without prior knowledge of the novel would be drawn to it and know what to read. That way they discover two version of the story which may (or may not) be a good thing. (Do remember this was before internet availability and easy access to information).
No way. In 1993 the Academy was deadset on giving a career award to Al Pacino for Scent of a Woman, so much so that they overlooked Denzel Washington's far better performance in Malcolm X
That's hard to believe he wasn't nominated for Dracula. I mean he was 6 or more characters and no CGI was used. He actually wore all the makeup and costumes. Another example of the extraordinary talent of Mr. Oldman!
@@ashaale3605 Agree, it's just popularity contest. It has nothing to do with acting anymore, they gave oscar to Gaga playing herself...and iv'e seen better acting on Pornhub.
I'm glad I'm not the only who was stunned Kilar's memorable score wasn't at least nominated. Like the film it's both romantic and dark. It captures the film's beauty and perfectly reinforces the horror. Never heavy-handed yet never too subtle.
We watched this movie so many times as teenagers. It’s visually stunning. This went on my short list of movies that I would own the rest of my life and never get tired of.
The best Dracula the big screen has seen to date. Say what you want about Keanu or the acting, Gary outshined whatever negative aspect of this movie there is. My fav Dracula movie, easily.
@@gerrygrimes8689 Okay, so where do you want me to start? His portrayal of Ludwig van Beethoven in _Immortal Beloved?_ Or his dead-on Lee Harvey Oswald in _JFK?_ Maybe the villainous Congressman in _The Contender?_ His portrayal of Winston Churchill in _Darkest Hour?_ ... I can *easily* go on! But let's, for a moment, mention his multiple Best Actor awards (Oscar, SAG, BAFTA, Golden Globe, Emmy, and more)... If you don't think he's a legend, you've either got a personal bias or a loose screw, because the evidence counter to your opinion is self-evident _and_ plentiful.
Gary had a habit of getting robbed. He should have been nominated for Dracula, State of Grace, Leon the Professional, and he should have won for Tinker Tailor Solider.
A magnificent underrated masterpiece of cinema... Everything is perfect in this movie. It is a film that was shot in the old fashion of filming. Special effects are a delight for the eyes. The costumes are purely beautiful. A soundtrack that envelops us. This film should be studied more carefully. This film deserves much more recognition. A pure masterpiece as it is rare in this style ...
I agree wholeheartedly, the only thing i believe that could've been thought out better was the casting of Keanu Reeves. It was bad casting, he was the only weak link in this whole film but it really didn't matter because the film was so damn good, so artistic so mesmerizing. I could overlook that flaw easily, I'm just saying so to be picky but otherwise this film is so so underated. It should have garnished Oldman an Oscar Nod at the very least and a Directors Nod as well.
@@LS-ti1rz I totally agree with you. The cast Keanu Reeves at the time must have been weird to perceive, it wasn't a role made for him but it's not bad. Personally it never bothered me. The film is so perfect that keanu Reeves quickly forgot that it was playing in it. In addition the film is so well cut that there is no length with Keanu Reeves. Well done.
Keanu Reeves was said to be exhausted at the time (after a series of films). Coppola even says that the actor was striving to get the accent and all (even if it failed). For me, the less pleasing acting came from Hopkins who turned Van Helsing into some kind of illuminate old man.
@@luckycat3 love this movie so much, that I watched it everyday for 2 weeks during the lockdown... I watched it when it came out at the movie theater, and fell in love with it❤
I'm 37 years old Bram Stoker's Dracula is one of my favorite movies. The movie for me has gone from horror To the Saddest love story ever ! Absolutely amazing piece of work, a timeless art that we will all enjoy fans will be able to share
His performance in Dracula is easily in his Top 3 Greatest performances of all time! He should got nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for this.
Because this is a story about true, eternal love. So powerful that when tragically ends can lead man to turn against his God, to become a monster and on the end give up own life for it. What can be more romantic than that? Best love story ever.
@@hexxon77 very true. Everything this man ever believed in was crushed to powder right before his eyes. Everything he had ever loved, believed in and worked to defend was obliterated. It is quite interesting when one reads accounts that the Church as a whole declared suicide a mortal sin due to the fact that the Apostle Paul said in scripture "For me to live is Christ and to die is gain" These times were so difficult many Christians chose death believing they were heaven bound regardless. The church, needed money and people in the pews and the pope of the RCC at the time declared suicide a mortal sin. I can EASILY understand his rage, fury and heartbreak pushing him to the point of tapping into something forbidden and his sense of abandonment.
He created and played the most hauntingly believable Dracula ever recorded on film....period. How the man didn’t win an Oscar for that performance I’ll never know.
Oldman has used a different voice, and dialectic phrasing in every role he's played. Never the same voice twice...ever. I can think of no other actor who can boast that accomplishment. Truly a great actor.
he deserved an oscar for Dracula. He was the only one who could be Dracula in a modern way. With all my respect for Christopher Lee, Bela Lugosi and Lagella.
I remember seeing the commercials for Dracula when I was a kid with him cackling at the end and it was truly terrifying. Now I can appreciate what a tremendous talent Gary Oldman is
Honestly this is my favorite version of this movie because it sticks so closely to the actual book. Not to mention Gary Oldman as the "human" Dracula is just *chef's kiss*
That was a great role n only an actor of Gary’s talent pulled it through ! He deserved an Oscar nomination n probably a win ! Made Dracula real n believable ! Great love story ! Classic now !
Hands down 1 of his best performances ever.. Scary, yet Tragic. Beautiful yet Dark. Gary Brought Vlad To life not just Dracula the vampire but the Tragedy of His story.. Its great to see him talk to about this.. If you watch the behind the scenes making of Dracula (which you can see if you hit the expanded dvd) you can tell how difficult it was to pull off this role considering he was working with Keanu Reeves who was just coming into his own as an actor. Gary old man as Chief Gordon, Oldman as A bad guy in Lost in space & The fifth element, Or even his role in The animated Classic Quest for Camelot, his acting is second to none! Much respect to This man right here, I need TO get Dracula on Blu ray because I've never seen it in that Resolution
He was stunning in this, and God them OUTFITS!!! He can wear anything :) And then just as mesmerising in Tinker, Tailor even there controlling the screen where he is actually just grey ...
Watched it last night for the first time in years, great film practical effects are amazing better than all this cgi crap..Oldman is such an underrated actors..
My favourite version of this classic novel, film and perhaps, Gary Oldman in his most iconic role. Lost count how many times I've watched this movie. Superb!!!
Gary Oldman made Dracula look sooo beautiful. I adore him in that movie. I’m watching even in 2024. It’s a timeless classic. The costume, the background, the characters. Beautiful
Only Oldman could play the vampire like that because he himself is not really a monster inside. If I objectively look at the character he played, I think in real life that person would be a narcissistic personality with a violence problem. Instead, I feel he’s a poor tortured soul, that has been separated from his one true love and that has me rooting for the character no matter how many lives he takes out in the process. One of my favorite scenes is of him and Ryder where her character Mina remembers the past. I never get tired of it. It comforts me in times of joy, in times of sadness, and in times when I just want to believe in love so grand it cross over decades of time to find someone again. That is what made this story so beautiful and Coppola’s ability to capture it on film was brilliant! I’m so in love with this movie.
I saw this film in the theater when it was released. Several people walked out shaking their heads in boredom- I couldn't believe it. Oldman's performance is an absolute masterclass. This film is in my all time top 10....and Oldman- to me- is the best male film actor alive...Side note- I briefly met Gary Oldman in 1998 in a pharmacy in LA- he was in front of me on line. I briefly said "you're a great actor". He turned around, smiled, and humbly said 'thank you'....it's chilling that this humble British man can unleash such insane rage on cue
Gary's a class act on and off screen, there's footage of him and Francis arguing on set during the making of Dracula but he put that aside and killed it
This movie may have been satisfactory at best without Oldman's portrayal. I don't even care for vampire lore and yet it is one of my all time favorites.
This is one of my favorite films and Gary is absolutely stunning as Dracula. I absolutely loved his acting and I can’t gush enough about how amazing he is in the role
I’ve wondered if Gary Oldman and Daniel Day Lewis actually have their own personalities. They so completely transform themselves for a role they seem to become their character in real life.
Probably one of the most underrated actors of out time. Back then, yes he should have won an Oscar, now he would probably turn any award down because they don't mean anything anymore.
Gary Oldman was simply outstanding in this role. The film will stand the test of time as well as his unforgettable performance in it. There have been many films made about the principle subject but none like this one.
Best vampire movie of all time and the best Dracula movie of all time. In the end he was a tragic hero. Mirroring reality in a sense that life doesn’t have happy endings.
An excellent adaptation to an excellent story. Gary Oldman is one of the greatest actors alive today and he portrayed Dracula so iconically that it's his version I always think of when I think of the character.
He says this, but he also fought with Coppola all the time and his costar who did play Hannibal has outright said in interviews that Coppola was giving Gary Oldman nothing to work with for the whole movie. Oldman was just as much a reason this is a great film.
Little did I know that when I saw this version of Dracula back in the 90’s I would really come too appreciate the film years later and that Gary Oldman would become one of my favorite actors!!!👍
01:07 P-E-R-F-E-C-T-I-O-N 😍 Gary is one of the most iconic, outstanding, brilliant actors and underrated at the same time which is completly unfair. He should had won the Oscar for this performance. He looks so beautiful and hot like Winona, amazing chemestry in the screen; this movie is pure, true love and the music is made in heaven
It's so interesting to me that the one role in his entire career that he pursued was Mason Verger in Hannibal. Out of all the characters he's played, that definitely wasn't what I would have expected.
My absolute favourite Dracula, Gary Oldman played a fantastic part, seductive, charming, dashing and absolutely ruthless, superb acting, great cast, great soundtrack, one of my favourite all time movies. Gary Oldman should have got an oscar for playing this, bravo XX
If they put his character from State of Grace (from the same year) beside Dracula's character, they would have given him all the awards for the next 10 years. I couldn't believe it was the same person after seeing his name in the credits. Best actor of both centuries.
Gary Oldman, very serious, cool and multifaceted!! Good guy, bad guy or just an asshole he delivers the goods!! Always a pleasure to see movies with Mr. Oldman in it....
Gary Oldman might be actually the greatest actor Hollywood has ever known. he has been in everything and played every kind of character good and bad has been sexy and repulsive and in each role he looks entirely different! he has even been in comedy and done it super well. this man is so unsung he needs a special Oscar not for best picture.......but for the best actor ever to hit Hollywood!
The one of Oldman's roles that scared me the most was as the corrupt, pill-popping cop in "Leon- The professional". There was his merciless brutality, and always a thin film of sweat on his face. The clincher however was the deadness of his eyes. Stanfield's stare which made it abundantly clear that this man was completely unhinged.
