Genius in artistic terms, but like many fashion designers, she had no sense of practicality. Looking at all those shots getting ruined because of the suit falling apart makes me cringe.
Well, that's not really saying much, considering 100% of those previously made were b pictures, or haven't aged well (sorry, Bela). This is the best Dracula film, absolutely, but one best watched on mute. The acting on all levels is atrocious. But, damn, if it isn't beautiful.
the dragon armor really worked for gary oldman because even though it constricted him, it forced him to lumber around like a large, brooding animal. it added to his character
I love it. His constrictive armer could not constrict of the pain he felt. When he jumped up the altar to stab the cross, you could see anger, rage and power. Probably that costume was annoying and it was greet when Oldman said screw this I am gonna do what I am gonna do.
Now I understand why the actors (gary and sadie) muved as lizards. Yureis (japanese ghosts) are usually portrayed this way. She endeed gave a tremendous contribution to the film. All an artist.
@@jeanandre6998 - The gold plated -gown-like costume Dracula wears towards the end when he's an old man returning to his home land. It's what he's still wearing at the very end, I believe. Look up Gustav Klimt's work "The Kiss" and many other of his artworks to see the influence.
I disagree violently. Keanu Reeves and to a lesser extent Winona Rider where absolute garbage in this film, almost to the point of ruining the whole movie. Stand outs where of course Gary Oldman and Anthony Hopkins, but Tom Waits and Sadie Frost where also very memorable. Without a doubt Keanu Reeves is just awful, he's a terrible actor who now can only do films that simulate mass murder.
Shades of Fellini here, operatic, imaginative, and thoroughly over the top! It certainly gave this film the visual heft and eccentricity it truly deserved...brilliant job.
Film this is the epitome of ART ! Francis is a Master visionary and storyteller. The costumes were imaginative, colorful, nightmarishly dreamy and superbly done! They belong in a Museum!
This movie is a masterpiece, Coppola made a work of art. Gotta love some italian-american filmmaking. Gary was superior in this movie. I watch it every now and then.
Fantastic movie. I had decided to buy the movie and the same night on walking the dogs I found the dvd just lying on the pavement ! How creepy is that !
@Lifestyle Benefits of Virginia Yup, it's something that happens a LOT to me. When I was younger I saw a small wooden box in the window of a shop that was closed for lunch, I made a mental note to go back , walked three feet and found the same box sitting on the sidewalk with it's removable lid on it, not thrown, not damaged, perfect. I didn't pick it up at once, tried to get my head around it, the 'other' box was there in the window, identical. I eventually took it home and since then never forgot. Another day, no money, down in life, hungry I was out walking, had a pang of hunger stopped to grab my gut and breath, looked down and I was standing of 30 euros, right at that spot! I have a few of these weird stories.
@Captain Brandon Horror Film Lover I guess what Black Phillip means is in terms of cultural mindset and how someone from another culture can bring in different ideas outside the standard norm. But its also true that at the end of the day we are all individuals and even someone from deepest Texas with the right talent could have come up with something brand new.
UrbanSpaceman100 Coppola desire was to move away from the Dracula stereotypes. We all have been trained to view him one way. You needed an outsider to give a fresh look and man did it work. Beautiful and extremely haunting, the armor, the reptilian dress, it was a masterwork by Ishioka.
@@jeanandre6998 I saw the movie on tv first so many censored scenes. Curiosity beat scare haha rented the VCD some years later and was even more impressed. Certainly my top 10 movie list.
This woman and her work are amazing. I thought for a second there that Draculas costumes wore slightly oriental looking after watching this movie. But when you look back at Romanian culture being of a eastern European style and culture. Influenced by both worlds for the past two-thousand years. With Roman, english, Mongolian and Turkish culture it's more historical on the money rather then Hollywoodish. Great work.
I've been luck enough to have visited The Frances Ford Coppola's Nappa Valley winery where there is a museum there with costumes and artefacts from his movies. There were the Oscars for The Godfather and the original desk, an old car - I'm not sure which movie it came from, Sophie Coppela's Mari Antoinette ship. The most amazing costumes were from Dracula, Gary Oldman's war armour from the beginning of the movie, Lucy's wedding dress, photo's and many more items - well worth the visit.
great costumes first-rate insightful clever sensitive riveting powerful fascinating pleasant frightful surprising dazzling thought provoking imaginative legendary . One of the best movies of all time 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
The sets, cinematography, and direction was a genius juxtaposition to the wonderful costumes and passionate/colorful dialogue and amazing score . This was a truly inspired movie and remains one of my favorites to this day. I have watched it so many times and still get chills. I notice more details and thenes with every watch.
The red armor-type costume for the one Mr. Oldman wore on the very beginning of the movie where he found his bride who killed herself, that’s a favorite costume. Very cool.
That armor was troublesome, but it’s iconic. Sometimes you just have to roll with it to get the shot because that image will come across very memorable.
I love the contrast of costumes between West and East. I always imagined Dracula being more from the Eastern part of the world like the real Dracula. It gives him a foreign otherworldly presence that I would have imagined in the Bram Stoker book.
In your childhood your senses, consciousness take far over the mind,so the experience of seeing such a movie can litteraly touch and leave prints in all the ways
Costumes are beautiful. I've lost count of how many times I've watched this movie. Annie Lennox's song and the lyrics are perfect after the end of the movie.
I lover her unusual take on design...where she blended a rather traditional design and juxtaposed it with out-of-this world production. It's not through and through avant garde....but when you look at it, you still can see some traditional silhouette and scent of it..but given a total editorial interpretation
This movie is one of my favorite and i always thought the costume was amazing. I never knew who design the costumes until i see this video, thanks for the uploads.
Love never dies bless the man who did the music I fell in love with Gary oldman right in the beginning of the movie when Dracula went to war I fell in love with the movie when I saw it the 2nd time Gary oldman you should have took over the world with Mina by you side for all eternity p.s it sucks when Dracula dies sorry Ford Coppola
One of the best films ever made. Epic on so many scales. Thanks for the upload. It explains so much, from Mr. Coppola's vision, and the focus of financial resources, to the custom selection and purpose.
I think bram stokers Dracula is the best Dracula movie ever maid l was sorry that Netflix has taken it off l hope they will consider putting it back on again 👍👍👍👍
Well, it's something incredible this movie, the cast, the music, the costumes, the direction, all the basic instincts are represented here, love, lust, anger, drama, action, drugs, death and religion! I sincerly doubt sombody make a master piece like this in the future.
Can't help but feel Francis thought the costumes were not really what he was looking for. He's got kind of regretful look in his eyes whenever he's being interviewed.
Yeah but that’s every artist including Ishioka herself. Replicating an erotic dream via costumes is an unimaginable task. She accomplished it, we got to see it and she won an Oscar for it. :)
