Bramble: One of the most famous cocktails of the modern era

The Bramble is Bartender Dick Bradsell's masterpiece Gin cocktail which helped to push Gin at a time when Vodka was king and Gin was looked at as an old man's beverage.
This cocktail is a Modern Classic created by the godfather of the 1980's London Cocktail Scene. The late Dick Bradsell was known as the sort of British version of Dale DeGroff and was most famous for not only using fresh ingredients at a time when club culture was king and everyone was using Roses Lime Juice and other chemical laden ingredients, but also for his innovative cocktails. He is the creator of not only the Bramble but also the Russian Spring Punch, the Vodka + Espresso (better known as the espresso Martini) the Treacle and the Wibble. He bartended at some of the most exclusive spots in London and it is rumored that he invented his Vodka+Espresso (Espresso Martini) when model Heidi Klum asked him for something that would "wake me up and fuck me up".
Sadly Bradsell passed away February 27th 2016 of a Brain Tumor. He will be missed and we should give him a cheers every time we make one of his masterful cocktails.
For me this is a gateway Gin cocktail, that is, a drink you can make for someone who claims they hate Gin and have them fall absolutely head over heels for it. It's very Gin forward but also features a balanced amount of lemon juice, simple syrup and Creme De Muir.
Also as a note: the creme de muir that I make in this episode is house made. And yes I will do a video on how to make it.

My favorite summer drink. It’s a bit unorthodox, but I add the slightest bit of homemade blackberry reduction to the bottom of the glass. As the drink dilutes and evolves, that last bit of sweetness is amazing.

Great modern classic. An alternative to Crème de Mûre (and my go to for this cocktail, since I don’t keep a whole bottle of blackberry liqueur on hand) is to muddle a few fresh blackberries with granulated sugar then drizzle that on top of the cocktail.

To me, Gin was the most obscure spirit because ive never had it and most of the people around me were into whiskey rum and vodka. But After getting into modern classic/classic gin cocktails such as the bramble, gin is my favorite spirit!!!!

Can you please make the Marie Antoinette cocktail? It is from Dutch Kills Bar in NYC. Recipe- ingredients • 2 oz Plantation Rum 3 Stars Rum • 0.75 oz Fresh Lemon Juice, • 0.75 oz Simple Syrup, • 0.75 oz White Creme De Cacao, • 4 Fresh Raspberries Recipe Combine liquid ingredients in a shaker and dry shake to mix. Muddle raspberries in the bottom of a large rocks glass with splash of liquid ingredients and top with crushed ice. Pour remainder of cocktail over ice and top with a fresh berry for garnish.

Another good version of this same concept is your essential Bee's Knees recipe, but modify for an inclusion of blueberry syrup. I use a simple demerara + the berries extraction for the syrup. As a bonus, the color is wild. Add it to a White Russian, for example, as well.

Thanx! I am a starting "homebartender" since a couple of months, got the Bramble from the book I got (using copperhead Gin), and I had to muddle a raspberry in the sugar syrup first. but didn't like it - the sweetness of that took the upperhand on the citrus (I'm more of a bitter and sour lover) - and didn't like the Gin undertone. Which made me wonder what I was doing wrong - because I normally like the gin flavour(s). But came to the conclusion that it was the actually copperhead I didn't like. Huge difference with beefeater of Tanquery. Gonna try It again after seeing this - meanwhile switched to Tanquery N°Ten Gin, which I like a whole lot more re-tried building cocktails I made with the copperhead, they come out a lot better ...but didn't yet retry a bramble. So that's what I'll be trying this week :-)

Spot on with turning gin-haters into gin-lovers. Gin was the only base alcohol I ran out of at an event with a bunch of vodka/bourbon lovers who hated gin... all thanks to the Bramble (and then getting them to try the Aviation and a few more straight up gin cocktails).
@TheEducatedBarfly
@TheEducatedBarfly 4 года назад
No go to for cocktail flight to turn gin haters into gin lovers are: Eastside (crowd pleaser), Bramble (still pleasing but more gin forward especially before you mix in the Creme de Muir, I also use gin in my Creme de Muir LOL), and lastly two to one Martini with a few dashes of Orange bitters and an orange twist. Done. Lifelong gin lovers ever after

I noticed on many of the shaken cocktails that are double strained; when you separate the Boston Shaker you drain the top tin in the glass so as not to waste. Wouldn’t ice chips from that tin make it into the glass before double straining?I’ve seen bartenders drain in the full tin as an alternative. Sorry to sound picky, just curious. Thank You for great presentations.

I’ve been making this one for a while and love it but I just decided to go with Chambord instead of Crème De Mure, and I’d call it a Briar lol not sure if that would ever catch on but I like it. Did dial up the Chambord a little more to 0.75 oz, seems to be teetering very close to 1934 Cosmo though to be honest, but it’s so much easier and I didn’t get my raspberries to impart the intensity that this does so I’m learning to not just follow the recipes but switch them up *laughs maniacally with the sense of power* mwhahaha

Thanks for the great videos! Quick question: I make Brambles fairly often but I find that my Crème de mûre often sinks to the bottom of my glass after about 2 minutes. I’m using “Merlet” brand. I imagine this is a density problem. Are there things I can do in drink prep or brands of Crème de mûre that solve my problem?
@TheEducatedBarfly
@TheEducatedBarfly 4 года назад
Nope. It’s the density while drinking your mean to take a straw and stir it, then it will combine that’s about it. As you can see in this video, the Creme de mure went to the bottom.
@BACKAGAINBAND

The crushed ice, helps delay the sink…but ultimately, you need to stir to combine.
