Oh nice sam, thanks for this, I was looking at getting one of these for Christmas, but couldn’t find any good reviews, and yours are always good and trustworthy.

The one I was waiting for! So glad there is finally a decent GWR loco out there, high hopes for the Prairie now! Re: the chimney, Dapol have gone for the 63xx variant, which like the 53xx and 73xx had cast iron rather than copper capped chimneys and therefore usually painted safety valve covers too. Some metal bright work on the Prairie however would be the icing on the cake. Now to go and buy one...

I like a loco that tends to slow on gradients, it makes it more realistic.

Mine has just arrived. Totally stunning, very very very impressed. Made in England as well. I am going to buy many more of their models!

Received mine today. BR lined green livery late crest. Excellent model. Runs well straight out of box. Good crawl on DCC. Two buffers fallen off in box but easily refitted.

That's an incredible user manual! My Bachmann USA locos only come with a parts diagram (which is usually inaccurate) and a page of guidelines and warnings.

Great review as always! Regarding the uneven running at low speed, I had the same problem with a Hornby Hall (one of the Hogwarts ones, actually) at the hobby shop where I work. It turned out that the crosshead guides were slightly too tight, and bending them outwards just a miniscule amount helped quite a bit. Might be something to try.

omg i love the moguls in real life. i just love their look! it looks like a 2800 but with a 2-6-0 wheel configuration, and i LOVE the 2800s! and i also love the 2-6-0 wheel configuration! that's why they are one of my favorite locos ever. and my favorite GWR loco probably.

Hey, Sam. The locomotive is fantastic and Dapol have really been ahead of the times with this model especially with the connection between the loco and tender, it looks almost like a connector to an iPod/iPhone charger or something and the smoke box with the DCC socket to remove and put in, it’s a fantastic idea! Probably the best loco to buy from Dapol, so far.

Can you start reviewing Irish, French, and German engines?

Hi Sam! It’s a great looking loco, really good attention to detail & finished beautifully! I love the plug & play nature of the DCC connector & the tender connection! DCC has not been widely adopted in Japan, but a large amount of models are built to accept chips, either by similar plug & play or by replacing PCBs, however only Kato marks it’s plug & play models as DCC ready in Japan! It’s quite ridiculous that so many every day consumer devices are getting simple plug-in interfaces, but there are still so many models coming without even having basic provisions for DCC.

Great review, these things are almost Bachmann standard but at a decent price. Mine arrived today (Late Crest version). Mine arrived with the front buffers and smokebox dart loose in the box. Not broken, just no glue!!!!!

Good to see innovation in design

Thank you for an excellent review. It is worth noting, in Dapol's favour, that only the wide, parallel chimneys had a copper cap. It would be nice to see one of course, but Dapol's chimney is of the narrow cast-iron pattern, and perfectly prototypical. I have of course ordered one but still can't get a decent chassis for my old Mainline one, whose body has been refitted with metal chimney and safety valve/cover.

I was thinking of getting a Mogul, but was a little doubtful after watching that review on the Dapol Terrier. But now if I decide to get one, I can feel fully confident that I won't be disappointed. The mechanism, ease of installing a DCC decoder, and especially the loco to tender connection definitely make this model worthwhile. I'm not really concerned about the torque mainly since I don't have any gradients. Now I can be fully confident that Dapol's upcoming release of The Manor will be a great model. That one I will definitely purchase. -Raymond

Top marks to Dapol on this one. It looks gorgeous and is at a decent price. Fingers crossed for their Wainwright D class which is coming next year.

Someone may have already pointed it out, (beautiful loco and must have one btw) but the tender had two pairs of wheels locking up on the slow running probably not helping the running characteristics! Do love it though, very impressed!

Yes do get a second lined one. We need to support Dapol because they are making really useful innovations like that tender drawbar and providing it at a reasonable cost. And might I add how good of a feature that is, because I have had a lot of wires come loose in the locomotive to tender connection. I do think that you were just a little generous on the value catagory. The J36 is cheaper, had a die cast boiler, and runs better. I would either up the J36 to a 5+ or knock this one down to a 4.5.

Looks a smart loco I hope their GWR large Prairie tank locomotive is going to be as good as this and beat Hornby's derailing new version.

Amazing review on the Dapol GWR Mogul steam locomotive! I have to say, the detail on this model looks very impressive, especially for a brand new locomotive! It’s unfortunate that the performance let’s this thing down a little bit, but other than the performance, it still looks really amazing! I’m gonna give this a B+! 😃👍

My Mum won a Triang Black NE B12 on eBay for £29.50. I'm hoping it comes on friday so I can run it around while watching your stream on Friday. That Mogul is very nice especially for Dapol.

i think that a feature that would be really cool to see would be having proper suspension on the tender wheels because i have a set of 6 full metal coaches and two full metal locomotives from the 1960s that do and it looks beautiful when they are in motion running around

Goodness me! I was pleasantly surprised to see how much better this Dapol loco was compared to previous ones. Here’s hoping they continue to be like this (maybe slightly better performance) and then I’d be seriously worried if I was Bachman. Certainly being left behind (in steam locos) by Hornby, Oxford and now Dapol!

Awaiting for mine to come in. I got one DCC fitted from the factory. And I am so far away, so a few weeks yet. But it is good to know that it will not derail like the terrier does all of the time on my set

Keep saying this but the wheels are everything, take an old Corgi or Dinky car or truck and put some decent wheels on it and wow, a toy just turned into a model... Just the same with model engines, must say it looks just like it's come out of Swindon's factory...!! Stunning and well designed and most of all affordable...nice one Sam...👍

Brilliant loco. In terms of the extra features such as that tender connection and DCC socket, it is the future of model railways. At that sort of price, the hobby will once again be able to reach out to more people. I model BR(s) mostly, but I think even I'm going to have to pick one of these up. Might wait for a GWR black, ROD black or ROD khaki one though, provided they do any of those. Massive shame about the performance as I value that over pretty much everything, but I think the price, detail and features really make up for it. Loved the video :)

Fantastic Sam, normally I wait for your reviews before I buy a new engine, but as it's a Dapol I ordered a DCC factory fitted version of the same model as yours (not released yet). I am not worried about performance as DCC designed locos usually run far better on my DCC layout than on my DC test track. The sprung centre axle is a brilliant idea, I have too many see-sawing 3 driving axle locos due to the middle axle being a fraction of a mm too low. The glowing fire box as standard along with the detail and livery options should seriously worry Hornby and Bachmann for the price. This is a brand new tooling after all and if you compare it to some of the airfix old tat that gets re-released by Hornby for £20-£30 less than this then it is no wonder that Hornby have got into financial difficulties not too long ago. I can see this one being like the Dapol" Bubble car", going into continual re-release. This could be almost as good value for money as Hornby's Q1 (But they charged too little for the Q1!). Keep up the good work and I hope the new Bachmann Thomas is out before Xmas so you can review it.

Wow shes lovely! If I had the money , I'd see myself buying one but just spent nearly 70 on an Adam's Radial Tank so not sure I'll be allowed to spend anything else for a while! But overall , I didnt expect this off Dapol and I'm so happy it's so good. It's just Heljan who need to impress with steam lol

The J70, Class 56, Class 37, and now this! While this year has been quite bad, at least the models are (for the most part) very good. I would say you were a bit too generous with this one however, but it is still a great model!
