This is a look at the new ESEE 5 with 3-D handles. I have liked the ESEE 5 for a while now, but the offering
with new handles makes this thing even more likable. As you will see, there are some cuts that I found easier to do with the original handles, but I am sure that for some users these handles will be exactly what they were looking for. Hey Tim, Thanks for the review! We always appreciate the honest feedback whether good, bad, or indifferent. We are excited about the new scales and you are right...the knives AND SHEATHS will fit the same....No ETA on when/if the scales will be sold by themselves but I do see that as a strong possibility for sure so you can mix/match as you like and retrofit your older ESEE without issue. 2 models in S35vn will be the Original ESEE 3 with contoured scales and a new model called the Xancudo Fixed, patterned after the popular Zancudo folder that we designed and that Blue Ridge Knives manufactures.....thanks again!

I definitely think that releasing the new scales as a standalone item would be advantageous for both yourselves from an expansion perspective and long term customers like myself who have several Esee tools that are in need of an upgrade. My models 4 and 6 are crying out for a new set of contoured scales!! Again, great work Esee. Looking forward to seeing what else you guys bring to the table in 2020. All the best to you for the year ahead!!

I love the Esee 5...yes it's heavy but I don't anticipate engaging in an epic hour long knife fight where that really matters...I can make paper thin curls on a feather stick and can carve a crude spoon with it better than some of my smaller knives...liked it so much I bought another one (used)!

I was excited to see the new 3D handles. The original blocky handles just weren’t comfortable to me. Definitely makes me want to get one now.

Love esee. The 6 is my favorite. Just moved back to the east coast from the Pacific Northwest so I am very interested in the new steel that esee is looking to use.

Great input. The junglass is also my favorite survival blade and probably my favorite knife in general honestly. Still wanna try the 5 and/or 6 tho. Maybe a RAT 7

We have others that are much more subdued.....our time in the Jungle has led the the creation of some Hard to lose blades for sure...but we prefer something a little more subdued....but in the jungle, necessity wins over aesthetic.

worth noting is the 3d handle has some somewhat sharp corners where the grooved part meets the backstrap. i still found this more comfortable than the original handle, but not perfect. i have not been a huge fan of the esee handles.

How’s it going Tim. I’m new to your channel, love all of videos I’ve seen so far. Esee is my overall favorite knife company, I own more Esee than anything. Are those new scales the same or different than the knife connections scales? Because last year I ordered a custom Esee 5 from them with olive drab scales and leather sheath. They fit my hard really well. But then again I love an Esee regardless. Keep up the good work man!

I'm so torn, I like neutral colours like the older ones and I like the natural wear look of micarta but I like the 3D handles, I'm looking at an Esee 3,

Are the handles out yet? I don't see these for sale on their website . I love the color scheme, in the high viz colors. If available , I will definitely be ordering one. I wonder how tough the finish on the blade will hold up to batoning though. Thanks , enjoyed the video.

You can buy pretty much the same scales at The Knife Connection. They have sold them for years. Esse claims the similarities are a complete coinkydink! To me, that says a lot about the honesty of Esse. Pretty sad, IMO. i need the 3D scales for my old ESEE 6. (The Tops Tracker series could use those scales too.) The 6 needs S35VN too... it would be the perfect knife with those upgrades. imo

Check out The Knife Connection for G10 scales pretty much identical to what Esse is now offering. Esse's are maybe a little more aggressive in the grip, but it is the same color combo. Esse feigns ignorance at the similarities - which is off putting to me. Esse's ridiculous denials has made me look at the offerings TKC has for the Ontario line. DECEIT IS NOT A GOOD SALES TACTIC!

I bought a 4 and did not like the new 3d scales, I just felt hot spots on my hands after using them for a while. I prefer standard canvas micarta untreated because I can get grip when its wet. I ended up buying the TKC G10 scales for the 4 because the 4 scales are just too small. I think Ill end up getting a 6 hm or the original 6 with micarta.

I am looking for a EDC pocket knife with locking blade. BUT I have arthritis in my hands and at times it's hard to close. Any ideas on a knife. Thank you for your video.

Depends on how arthritis affects you. Maybe Benchmade and their Arc lock knives. If you want under 3" maybe a mini Griptilian or the new mini Bugout. If you want 3 1/2" a full size Griptilian, Bugout or a 940. Those are going to be around $100 new for the minis and $130 for full size. Opinel might also be an option. They are kind of old school and should function well for arthritis sufferers (also not so expensive). The best idea is to go to a shop that has a large variety of brands and styles and try them out. Different people have different needs and preferences - especially those with arthritis. Hello I like the video I have a question I'm interested in getting the 4 , 5 or 6 with the 3D handle but I have extra large hands pretty big mitts . lol . Is the handle size the same on all three but the blade length is different I don't really want to carry a longer knife if I don't need to so I was thinking that's 4 size or should I just do the five but I'm more worried about the length of the handles I can't find the measurements anywhere wondering what would be more comfortable in my large mitts thank you.

I have several of the 3D knives, (3,4,5 and 6), and the extra scales I bought fit both the 5 and 6. However, the blade is a bit longer on the 6 than the 5, and the 5 is wider and heavier. The 4 is a bit larger than the 3, and fits in the average hand just fine. If size and weight are a concern, then definitely go with the 4 over the 3 for larger hands. If you are not overly concerned with weight, and you can handle a bit longer blade, then I cannot recommend the 5 high enough. Especially for "large mitts". If you go to the Smokey Mountain Knife Works website and look at the 3D models, they give you the dimensions. Hope that helps.

besides the cool look, the Esee 5 is a complete flop for me... heavy, chunky blade with not much utility there are so many other better options out there for survival/outdoors

Handles themselves won't be available for a bit....as all the new handles are going on new blades at first....then we will see about making the handles available down the line.
