Patty Griffin is a staggeringly talented songwriter. This is one of the greatest songs ever written and Brandi does it justice. Thanks for recording and posting this!
Every time I listen to Flaming Red by Patti Griffin (quite often!!) I always wonder what it would sound like if Brandi sang it... and here it is! One of the most beautiful songs ever written. Patti and Brandi are the two best female vocalists in my lifetime - IMHO. My husband and I saw Brandi last weekend in NH and I swear I said to him, "I wish Brandi would sing Mary some day!" Thank you sooooo much for posting this!! :)

Nicefrog45: this song was written by Steve Earle and sung (gloriously) by Joan Baez on the album "The Day After Tomorrow" (2008). I was at this concert and her cover make me cry!! Brandi and Joan are two of my favorite singers, in fact, I'm surprised she hasn't covered more Baez songs bcs they too are emotionally raw often.
It was written by Patty Griffin, and I believe it's on Flaming Red. Or just go to iTunes. Patty is amazing, as is this song. The video cuts out and you miss most of it, unfortunately. We can hope she does it again soon!!
I too can't really understand a lot of what she says before singing. She speaks very close to the microphone so if anyone can print out what she is saying I would be grateful. This song 'Mary' is unknown to me but I like it, so can anyone tell me who wrote it and what Brandi says about it other than she wished she had written it. Love Brandi and would love to see her perform one day and hopefully meet her afterwards. Her smile makes my day. Great sense of humour too, can't wait for the new video
I stand corrected : Patti Griffin recorded it first but the first I heard it was 2008 sung by Joan Baez. I guess she wrote it too, but Steve Earle produced Baez's album.
