It’s so disheartening to get a genuine actor who really cares for the role not only for what it stands for but the fan base, and then get put into a movie where what goes wrong isn’t the actor but the ones behind the camera, just like Andrew Garfield. Love seeing him talk about it and that he doesn’t have a bad taste in his mouth moving forward.
@@JeffBee1 lol maybe I worded that weird but I see similarities between Routh as supes and the general idea the movie wasn’t “good” as Garfield also went through the same dynamic when he suited up in TASM 1/2.
Brandon was so INCREDIBLE in Superman Returns he brought me to tears. It was just like seeing Christopher Reeve on screen again. Massive respect for his work and the humility he brought to the role.
I think it's because it's more a love story than an action flick. The interaction between Clark and Lois and family has the most focus. It put a lot of men off
@@paulmichaelfreedman8334 Interesting, for me it was just the joy of seeing someone play Christopher Reeve so incredibly faithfully, there was so much soul in the role 👍😁
@@edwardfletcher7790 I thoroughly enjoyed the movie because I always go in without expectations. Storywise it's not perfect, but it was in Reeves style. I love Cavill as Superman, but DC made him a little too aggressive.
That is the weird thing about Superman Returns, people had issues with the film and even some of the casting but I don't think I ever heard anyone complain about Routh as Clark. If anything, that seemed to be the one thing people really loved so it was cool to see him come back as that character and remind people why he was cast originally. I like Cavill as Superman and hope to see more of him but it was disappointing that we never got to see Routh play the character more.
Yeah, though I didn't care for the movie, I didn't have a problem with Routh as the character. Personally, I like Henry Cavill as an actor, but I never loved him as the character. That's probably not an opinion that many fans share. I didn't care for Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman either. I'm almost positive most others don't agree with me on that one. lol It's all subjective, though.
Oh yeah, Routh hit it out of the park. I love his introverted portrayal of the character. This is the kind of Superman that you can tell the thoughts of without him needing to say anything, which is really hard to pull off. I know because I'm an introvert and nobody has any idea what I'm thinking most of the time.
I think after the disappointing box-office, Warner Bros. wanted a whole new revamp for the character as Superman Returns was essentially the unofficial sequel to Superman II, and the fact Bryan Singer is a big fan of Donner's Superman: The Movie was the main reason for Routh's casting in the first place.
@@r0bw00d Yeah, I feel like a lot of folks kind of miss a lot of the more interesting aspects of the character. Let's see a movie about the character dealing with the fact that he's trying to save the human species, while it seems hell bent on destroying itself, or something else out of the box like that. We have plenty of stock superhero movies.
For those that don't know, Bryan Singer tried to publicly blame Brandon Routh for "Superman Returns" underperforming - and this was at a time when Bryan's name carried some heft. The impact on Brandon's career was probably incalculable, and that may be a large part of what Brandon and Rosey are talking about. Just keep in mind 1) Everybody seemed to like Brandon's performance. 2) This is a script that featured Superman having an illegitimate child and never actually fixing that by taking any responsibility what-so-ever. 3) This is a script that featured Superman stalking Lois Lane. 4) This is a script where Lex Luthor is willing to destroy the world doing the same exact real estate scheme from Superman I, only this time on the East Coast. 5) This is a script that forced you to picture Lex Luthor "doing things" to an octogenarian 6) This is a script where the only super thing Superman does is lift heavier and heavier objects 7) Despite claiming CGI would be barely used; Bryan decided to go all-in on CGI - leaving Superman often looking like an action figure. 8) This is a script that called for Superman to get prison-shanked in the back and left for dead - you know, for the kids 9) This is a script where Lex Luthor already got rich and free and didn't really have any motivation beyond revenge on Superman - which living free and rich already pretty much accomplished. But remember, Bryan Singer said Brandon Routh is what hurt the movie, because that's just the kind of guy Bryan Singer is.
Concerning #9, rich people can never have enough money; just ask them. Also, I liked the plot twist that was in the video game tie-in: that Luthor is the one responsible for the news that Krypton had possibly been found, as he wanted Superman out of the picture so he could do whatever he wanted...and then he wound up going to prison instead.
Great points. I thought Routh was good in a film who's plot was terrible. It held on way to much of the 70s films. There's no real resolution with Luthor and is a real estate scheme really interesting? I much prefer the Luthor of the Animated series who was a brilliant scientist and business man always two steps ahead of everyone.
Everything was wrong with Superman returns including routh. He looked like a 10yr old in a Halloween costume. his hair looked really dorky. He is a horrible actor. The movie drug on and on. The only interesting scene was the plane scene only because of the special effects and then the actors ruined it. Lois lane was horrible. Kevin spacey was a horrible lex Luther. Nothing like hackman. Bryan singer set out to destroy Superman from the acting, the screen play, the special effects, and even the superman suit.
I thought Routh was excellent as Clark Kent... and only 'meh' as Superman. But I think a lot of that was script / direction issues, the entire movie was a bit of a mess... but Routh was far from the biggest problem.
Yeah. And hopefully, if he gets another Superman film, separate from the main DC continuity, I want him to actually fight back against Lex Luthor, instead of just getting his ass whooped by him, and his boys.
Routh was never the issue with Returns, and in the scenes of that film that are good- i.e. the plane rescue- he truly shines. I was so excited to see him return a the Kingdom Come Superman and he absolutely did not disappoint.
I was 7 years old when the movie came out and the flying looked soooo realistic that as a kid I thought Superman was real and him catching the plane looking Soo realistic with him almost breaking it due to physics of earth made me think even more that Superman was a real person I didn’t learn Brandon rouths name until I was 21. I truly believed that was Superman/Clark Kent
What I remember most about Brandon's superman was how he seemed to channel Christopher Reeve. I didn't find Superman Returns to be a terrible movie, but maybe that was because Brandon played his role as well as he did. I remember being disappointed to find he wouldn't be going forward in the role. I like Henry Cavill as superman, but there was certainly nothing at all wrong with Brandon's portrayal.
He did a very admirable job and a hard job at that. No one wants to be compared to the legend that was Chris Reeve as Superman, yet they asked him to pretty much impersonate him, and he did it shockingly well. It's a shame he didn't have a better script, director, and the chance to have his own take on portraying Superman.
The movie needed more action scenes what i wished was sumone do another one add brandon maybe get a better lex more action n do superman 2 n see it happen They know fans liked Brandon they dont care
I honestly never understood why people don't like this movie. I re-watch it all the time. I also like it better than the new ones personally. Felt like a sequel to the original 2. Loved it, and Brandon was fantastic. I remember not knowing people didn't like it until the end of Ted... lol
I think because most people describe it as "boring..." Which is a very objective thing, that one can´t deny (you can´t say "This people is wrong, by finding this movie boring..." It´s entirely up to them). Superman Returns is not bad, but it´s a very simple film (which is not a bad thing if you are a big fan of classic Supes), but I can understand why a very old school and "naive" take on Superman wouldn´t be for everybody (not even the general audience), just like Tarantino´s movies aren´t for everybody.
@@gabrielp9646 Just shocked me because my entire family and friend group really loved the film. I honestly think it isn't really boring or simple. I find this to be a collective opinion because it wasn't what people wanted at the time. Marvel succeeded by making it extremely accessible. Same way The Man of Steel was super well received. Was like, Zach Snyder making it super crazy and combat oriented and was super destructo 9000. I feel personally the man of steel was much a great example of a hollow movie and lacked substance compared to Returns. However I know I'm in the minority. Opinions am I right?
There is something about Brandon Routh's character/personality that he brings to Superman, that I find missing in Henry Cavill's performance. I think of Routh's Superman scenes, such as, the roof top scene with him and Lois, when she tells him he's been gone too long and that she's with someone else,..his reaction by backing away,..said it all,..no matter how invulnerable he is,..he felt that and was hurt,..or when he says good bye to her on the plane at the end,..after being saved,..and knowing he had to go back and might die,..and says to good bye to her,..you def felt that scene. Great scene and great chemistry with Lois/Kate Bosworth. There is no chemistry between Henry Cavill and Amy Adams. Sorry, but so true! It's unfortunate that Brandon Routh didn't get another chance to wear the cape again.
Oh please! Here we go! If you didn’t see any chemistry between Henry Cavill and Amy Adams you don’t know what chemistry is, especially if you think Routh and Bosworth had it, lol!
@@kotobukiya70 Lol there's definitely no chemistry between Cavill/Adams. Neither even feels like they're playing a character because they're both so underwritten. Both actors have since complained about their roles even. Bosworth was also a terrible Lois and Routh didn't have chemistry with her, but it's absurd to say that Cavill/Adams had anything close to resembling chemistry.
@@JordanMgordan Lol!!!! Oh it’s there alright! You just for whatever reason have your little issues with Cavill and Adams. I felt the same way about Christian Bale and Heath Ledger when people were blowing them up like they were king shit. They were both overrated as hell! And no Cavill NEVER complained about playing Superman. That was you! I don’t know about Amy Adams, but I know for a fact that Cavill never complained about playing Superman.
@@kotobukiya70 Not at all. Both are fine actors, no issues with them at all. Amy Adams you can find in an interview with Andrew Garfield here on youtube talking about it. Cavill in discussing Justice League, while he's been nice and courteous all across the board (because he's just a good dude) has repeatedly said that he didn't feel like he was truly getting to play Superman until closer to the end, particularly in Justice League. He doesn't outright complain like Adams did, but he's heavily implying that he wants to go further not just because he loves the character, but because he's been underwhelmed so far.
There were a few parts where I got really emotional watching Superman Returns. It had some of the most intense scenes and emotional scenes. It was one of the only proper Superman movies. The Superman story wasn't meant to be one long series of action sequences with space ships and annoying villains, like in Man of Steel. Man of Steel dropped the ball big time, by focusing on way too much action and not enough enjoyment and happiness.
it's very interesting to watch this clip after watching Spiderman No Way Home, and seeing that same the love/validation that went (deservedly) to Andrew Garfield. It shines a light on actors doing their best in a popular role, but not necessarily given the best material with which to work. With SR it was being beholden to the character established in the Richard Donner films, with ASM it was being beholden to studio wishes about setting up a cinematic universe.
Brandon Routh may have been asked to do an impression of Reeve but seeing him as Superman in the CW shows was a stark reminder of how perfect he really was as Superman. He looked, felt, sounded and moved like Superman would. That’s not an easy thing to do. I’m so happy he got to be Superman again. It kinda added layers to his and Reeve’s Superman since that’s the one he was portraying anyway.
Movie Industry and a big role like Superman takes a huge toll on the actor if the movie doesn’t work. I am glad Brendon got to play it again and got that validation. More power to you Brendon
It was really nice to see Brandon get some redemption. He killed it and it was because of this crossover that we got to see a bunch of things we never thought possible.
Brandon really matured into the role. He felt like a better fit for the character now than he did in 2006 (not that he wasn't great in Superman Returns). I just can't say enough good things about his return in Crisis on Infinite Earths. It was like Superman jumped right off the page. The characterization was Superman to a T. The costume is hands down the best live action Superman costume of all time. And it was all complimented by Brandon playing the part. I hope we can get more 🤞
I’m still not over it to be honest. Watched it again last week and he was the on.y one that made me cry. Don’t care to admit it. That scene in the kitchen “but did you love him……NO” , then he flies off with tears in his eyes. That killed me man. He set it all up perfect to play Man Of Steel right after. All the background was done. All the character building done. Was just ready to then go all out action movies. I love Cavill but after Reeve, Brandon will always be Superman in my eyes. He just done it so well and I’m glad just for his own mental well being that he got to have a proper send off. Decades overdue in my opinion.
I agree. I got a tear in my eye several times. Especially when he "dies" and when he hits the ground, the ground shakes like a shockwave. The movie was lower and more methodically made than the hacked together hack job, Man of Steel. That movie, Superman Returns has so many parts that are way under rated.
It's still mind blowing that superman returns didn't get the respect It deserved. I still feel like it's one of the best films ever made, in terms of emotion. He did a fantastic job as Superman, I felt like I was watching Christopher Reeve.
Brandon Routh is such an awesome human being! I've never known anyone who appreciated more the chance to play the iconic character of Superman. He was also fantastic as Ray on Legends of Tomorrow. He really deserves another starring role on a great show. I hope they find something for him.
Two years later for the party, but if he ever sees this: Superman Returns was a very fun movie to watch for me even at that time, and I still think it that Brandon is an underrated Superman in his own merit. And I also enjoyed watching Legends of Tomorrow, his scenes always made me smile. He seems the kind of person that always brings light and enjoyment around him
I would love to see a series or mini-series following Brandon's version of Superman. I think there's more to be had from his performances. I can assure you I loved him in that film and hadn't realised how sour things went.
I really enjoyed Superman returns. I thought it was an homage to the Christopher Reeve Superman 1. I especially liked Brandon Routh and was looking forward to seeing him in future Superman movies. I'm glad he got the chance to play that role again.
If they don't find a way to bring Brandon Routh back as Superman given how many other past iterations of DC characters back on the big and small screens it'd be a massive oversight. His Clark/Superman was so good that he shone through the material that he was given and made Superman Returns somewhat watchable. He needs another chance to really play this character on it's own merits instead of just being a part of someone else's story.
Superman Returns was my first Superman movie. It is my first time knowing and seeing Superman. Superman became one of my favorite superheroes because of it. While Brandon isn’t my favorite Superman, he’s my 2nd favorite and my first Superman My favorite is Tyler who is in Supergirl and Superman & Lois.
Brandon Routh is one of my favorite versions of Superman. Second only to Tom welling it was such an incredible experience to have him back as Superman, and I hope to somehow see him again in the role.
I am glad he got the chance to reprise the role. For anyone who really watched the movie Superman Returns, the problem of it was never him. The problem of it was things out of his control. His portrayal in the crossover was spot on.
Brandon Routh's Superman was stoic and Thoughtful. Henry Cavill's Superman is reactive, instantaneous and very predictable by opponents. Cavill's Superman is much like the DC animations of Superman. Strong and not to second tier intelligent. Batman in the animations is always outsmarting Superman. Routh's Superman, has the stored knowledge of many Galaxies to utilize when needed. This is my understanding of what Brandon Routh's acting conveys to me.
Routh as Clark really fits with the style of Christopher Reeve which is probably why he was cast for the role since Bryan Singer filmed Superman Returns as a sequel to Superman II.
I Will love to see an HBO Max series or mini series starring routh with this kind off kingdom come version of Superman. I remember His little appareance in the arrowverse special and he nailed it!!
I love Brandon!! He's been through a lot but never lost his optimism and kindness. After Reeve, Brandon genuinely made his way into my heart. As Clark, he embodies his adorkable and innocent side so masterfully. It's in those subtle micro expressions and mannerisms. And as Superman, he is like an anchor, a center of gravity that makes you feel safe. I believe Brandon makes such a great job because he's genuinely a good guy with a big heart, and he's not afraid to show his vulnerability and sensibility. I appreciate Henry Cavill and Tyler Hoechlin, but Brandon is the pure Essence of a modern Superman/Clark to me 💗 His comeback in "Crisis of Infinite Earths" was like coming full circle, a more mature and wise side of him!! I hope with all my heart he reprises his role 🧚🧚 Just as Brendan Fraser and Ke Huy Quan got their long overdue recognition, I believe Brandon's has a lot more to give and a lot of recognition to receive!! And I will be there to celebrate it!!
Routh is a fantastic actor and I find him to have fit the role of super man perfectly and this is coming from someone who is completely in love with Tom Wellings smallville and have watched smallville since I was 5 (now 23) routh gave something to the character of superman I’ve just never seen anyone else accomplish. Not to mention I think he physically fits the role well
If Tobey and Andrew can reprise their role as Spider-Man, so is you Brandon! And Henry as well if it's possible, and all actors who playing the character 🔥🔥💪🙌👍
He played a good Superman/Clark Kent. I liked it when it came out and I started to change my view of it when other people’s opinions changed my easily-swayed mind at the time. But it was a good homage to Richard Donnors Superman.
I've been a fan of Superman since 1982 as a 5 year old and this man did a great job playing Superman it felt like the Christopher Reeve character I grew up watching. Kevin Spacey also was a good lex luthor.
I loved him in Superman returns n so wish he will come back n work with sumone else it was nice seeing the idea he had a son but the movie didnt go wrong by him
Brandon was a great Superman and an amazing Christopher Reeve-esque Clark Kent. Really glad he got to play him again during the Crisis crossover, hope he gets to do it again someday.
I think there is a lot of potential for Brandon's superman shorts in the multiverse. Something like Disney's "Star Wars" shorts with expensive but short-lived special effects, and the rest can be filled with thoughtful character interactions.
Thanks to Brandon Routh for giving us the best Super Man ever and I really mean it. "Super Man Returns" was a very underrated movie at the time, but I'm glad "Crisis On Infinite Earth" remembered him and made him even better than before!😊
Love Brandon Routh, a great actor and great Superman and awesome human being. Would love to see Tom Welling and him on set together comparing their experience.
Brandon was a great choice for Superman, I thought. I also think Singer is a talented filmmaker but I would have some worries about dealing with him personally. He seems to be a guy who would turn on you out quickly if he needed to. And sometimes without even a reason. Just the vibe I get from him watching the DVD extras of Superman Returns.
When I think of Superman, I think of Christopher Reeve AND Brandon Routh. He did a superb job and there were so many scenes where it felt like I was watching Christopher Reeve. I watched Man of Steel and I didn't like it at all. If they were to make another Superman movie and Brandon Routh was cast again I'd watch for sure.
I loved Superman Returns so much. It was the best modern Superman movie. They have dropped the ball big time, by not continuing better with the franchise. It has one of the best scenes ever when he charges up in front of the sun, while floating out in space, and then he channels all of her rage and goes to save the world, doing something that almost kills him. In comparison, Man of Steel was painful to watch, the whole thing was just one non stop sequence of villains and pain.
Such a nice guy, I am so pleased to have met him at a UK convention back in 2018, wearing my 49ers t-shirt, only to find out that he is a fan too, I was a bit too starstruck to say much about it to him
Brandon Routh was an AWESOME Superman! It's so sad that Superman Returns didn't get a sequel, Brandon had a warmth to him that really replicated Christopher Reeve but was also unique in its own way. And Superman Returns wasn't reliant on destruction porn like Man of Steel was.
I honestly, as a Superman fan, I can appreciate his love for the Character. Same goes for Cavil. I think them, with Hoechlin can pull off a No Way Home type scenario in a movie.
Routh was always great as Superman. In many ways, he was the most accurate version. I just wish he had better writing for his interpretations of the character.
I have a different take than the other commenters. I loved the film (Superman Returns) and Brandon's performance, the story was a rehash of the original movie but was done in a way that I liked. It was fantastic to see him reprise the role, albeit in a somewhat different version of the character.
Literally last weekend I saw Chris Evans speak about how much better he feels about his second Captain America film. He described the first film as "being on defense" and "playing not to lose" because of the expectations of stepping into the character. Seems to be a pretty common experience.
Superman Returns was an amazing movie. It and Brandon's portrayal of Superman were beautiful homages to Christopher Reeve; who, taking nothing away from Tom Welling, Dean Cain, or Henry Cavill, was the penultimate Superman. It honestly saddens me that Superman's perfect resurrection through Routh was not appreciated deeply or permitted to generate sequels.
