Detective Cameron: " I've got good news and bad news. The good news is there's a new Brendon Tenold video on RU-vid today. Sorority Girl: "What's the bad news?" Detective Cameron: "It's been flagged by TOHO."
Also used in Big Trouble In Little China. It seemed to have a different meaning in each movie it was mentioned. I always figured it must be from a commercial or something.
It's Miller time,so where's the beef,i've fallen and i cant getup due to a headache thiiiiis big and its screaming for Excedrin......COWABUNGA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@zetetick395 He's so good, Weyoun from DS9 was only supposed to be a one off character who died at the end of the episode, but producers liked him so much they created the entire Vorta being clones just so they could bring him back.
Living in the 80s, it was 60s nostalgia we were about. Vietnam War movies and reviving the music careers of The Grateful Dead and The Beach Boys. That 50s nostalgia was in the 70s with stuff like Happy Days and Grease.
it's not irony, it's a lack of creativity on hollyweird's part and trying to capitalize on an entire decade's worth of classic IPs that today's hacks are pathetically incapable of matching. those of us who were around then aren't the ones going to see reboots/remakes, we've learned our lesson well on that one, so they fail even on a nostalgia level.
Fun fact, this movie has an alternate ending. After the detective sacrifices himself and blows up the sorority house, a dog walks up to Chris and Cynthia. Cynthia bends down to pet it, but it turns out the dog has been taken over and it shoots an alien slug out at her.
uk here, we rented this when i was about 10 on vhs. i saw that ending. was speaking to the youtuber films comics explained, he was on about a movie that ripped this off. told him to watch this and he thought this was done better. still scared the crap out of me lol..
The dog ending was also seen on Cinemax showtime HBO etc basically the premium channels but on the cable channel the detective ending is the one shown that's the ending I seen.i didn't know the dog ending existed til years later.
As far as my friend and I are concerned, Tom Atkins did play the same character in Halloween 3. We called him Dr. Badass in Halloween 3 and Detective Badass in Night Of The Creeps.
I met Fred Dekker last week at a horror convention in Manchester UK. He was a lovely guy and spoke lovingly about this movie and the monster squad. They don't make em like this anymore.
Sadly, it's probably due to them being cult classics. Emphasis on the cult part. Dekker seemed cursed to have movies flop on him, which is pretty damn sad considering. Not a huge fan of House, but Monster Squad and Night of the Creeps are two of my all-time favorites.
This was back when the name Fred Dekker meant something. How can you not love a film that has zombies, killer slugs, aliens, axe murderer, likeable characters named after horror directors and Tom Atkins, who is ready to kick ass. You will have a fun time and once it's over, you will be screaming like banshees. Plus American Horror Story: The Coven clearly took a lot from this movie. So get your popcorn ready, sit back and enjoy because it's Miller time!
J.C.: "Go for it! I mean, the girl has misplaced her marble collection, but go for it!" J.C.: "Cynthia, my time is limited -- much like the intellect of Steve." J.C.: "So you want to meet her?" Chris: "I want to MARRY her!" J.C.: "Afraid you're gonna have to meet her first. I know it's rough, but I don't make the rules."
“What is this, a homicide or a bad B-movie?” To quote Horror Guru, _“Oh, shit! Alpha ‘Stache is self-aware! I repeat, Alpha ‘Stache is self-aware!”_ In all seriousness, though, great review, Brandon!
@@RetroFan2.0 Because back in the mid 80's, "It's Miller Time" meant "Let's Party" or "Let's rock and roll". The same way nowadays people might say "Let's get it" or "Let's go!". You see, in the late 70's and 80's "It's Miller Time" was the catchphrase for Miller beer but then the saying became synonymous with wild n' out. It was in commercials and promotional posters and was in the lexicon of many Americans. Just go with it.
It astounds me when people ask simple questions on RU-vid when they could just look it up themselves by doing a three-second search and getting an answer RIGHT AWAY. Instead, they ask "how so" and then have to wait hours, days, weeks, months, years, or maybe NEVER for a reply when they could just look it up themselves. I did a search of "It's MIller time" and in literally a few seconds it told me everything I needed to know. Like I said, truly astounding how lazy some people are... lol
@@christopherwalkinalloverya5824 Funny, I thought Miller Time meant to get drunk to the point that you would get a literal splitting headache, like the one he provides the zombies with.
Hey, once you get past the whole Robocop sequel dismay, it's actually a laughably enjoyable movie! \🤖/ (it took me *years* to forgive it for being so crap-tastic compared with the fabulous parts 1 and 2, but once I did we had a ton of fun re-watching that hilarious trainwreck)
"It's Miller time" goes back to the 70's as a Miller Beer ad campaign slogan. It was still a pretty common saying when I was a kid in the mid-late 80's, usually meaning it was time to party, relax, etc... with that context, it really wasn't a random, out of place pop culture reference.
I didn't care for 3 as much, that's the point the people working on them stopped caring and just started ripping off Romero. Still, its way better than "Necropolis" and "Rave to the Grave". How the hell do you shoot two movies at once and still end up with two movies that have almost nothing in common?
@@LibraGamesUnlimited When they basically had Borg in Necropolis I gave up caring and went in to mindless entertainment mode. I couldn't do that with Rave though, it was just too bad for even that low bar. But I think their plan had been to do what 1 and 2 did with the same cast but as different characters. It wasn't the best thing to try again, given that it was something in 2 that people didn't care much for. 3 is special to me I guess, it is the first one I saw and made me a big fan of Melinda Clarke. It felt more psychological with it having the parallel with depression and self harm. Temporary relief from the real problem, but it lasts less and less time the more it is done. Maybe I'm just reading too much in to it, I just thought her character was really well done. There's a pretty good documentary about them if you haven't it, called More Brains. They only do talk about the first 3.
😂 thought the same thing when I rewatched it with the fam. I was like wait this isn’t how it ended. My wife was saying some psych babble about memory when I backed out of the movie and it read something like “special edition” or something. Then I grinned at the misses in victory......very proud of that moment.
He knows what Miller is and even made a joke of it when reviewing Bordello of Blood. He's just confused because that scene had nothing to do with Miller. And he also didn't wanna make a joke about beer for him since he preferred to reference Dick Miller.
Freakin love this movie! Seeing this cult film actually did get me to answer my cell phone with "Thrill Me" for a week. I only stopped because people kept asking me what I was talking about.
I've always assumed that "Miller time" was just referencing the Miller Lite slogan and the fact the zombies were frat bros. The requests this year have been stellar too. Night of the Creeps deserves as much attention as possible
I once shook John Landis’ hand, and told him I liked his movies. But I had to resist the urge to tell him I live in the town where that helicopter decapitated Vic Morrow and those kids.
I got to meet Will Patton once, since i Actually liked "The Postman" and he played General Bethlehem, i greeted him with "you spelt tyranny wrong" he seemed surprised i liked the movie, bullshitted with him for about 45min on the clock, gave him advice on travelling through the passes on I-5, seemed like a pretty nice guy
Okay one thing, the reason why at the beginning the two aliens were chasing the one with the canister was because he was infected, you can see his eyes were white Just thought I point that out, always thought it was a cool detail
To be fair, I think the guy working in the morgue / research facility had entered in like 90% of the code before the phone rang, and J.C. just happened to punch in the right number to finish it. It's still a pretty contrived way to get them into a secure area so they can get their corpse-sicle, though. Also, I thought the "I love you" part was J.C. knowing he was a goner and trying to explain how much he cared about his best friend. Though unrequited love works, too.
I love when a movie can get in the most fun bits of horror but still be funny. reminds me of tucker and dale Vs evil which pulls off the same trick, that's a movie you have to review some time.
The whole 'nasty alien thing from a crash-landed meteor' is a classic 50s B Movie trope, looooads of 'em start out that way. (in another 80's b movie you see it in _Killer Klowns from Outer Space_ (1988) as well)
@@zetetick395 well in Killer Klowns people thought it was a meteor but the ship had landed deliberately and then moved to the town itself before the climax.
I'm thrilled. (After this Review) By the way: Only now I noticed that the naked clubhead alien, which had blown the creeps into space at the beginning, had cloudy eyes (i.e. was already infested by the creatures themselves).
They thought they could escape. But they were tracked. And now those aliens are going to rid those creeps from existence, or capture them and rid them from our planet, for good. Hopefully that’s what they did anyway.🤞..
You're damn right one of my favorite movies of all time. I was 16 years old when it came out. I rented it many times. Still love it. My daughters having grown up in the CG era thought the effects were bad CG . I told them. Girls that's how real scary movies are done.
I recently found out that a Detective Cameron action figure once existed. Unfortunately I don’t think it has a pull-string that allows it to say, “Thrill me!” and “It’s Miller Time!” Lol.
That was the studio-approved ending that was shown in theaters because the executives, having NO clue how to sell the film, wanted to put a jump scare scene at the end. Knowing the film's narrative, it doesn't work.
Yeah, that's the ending I got the first time I saw this back in -86. It was the ending on VHS rental here in Finland. Was surprised later on, when I re-watched it on DVD and it had that other ending.
Yup, studio fired Tim Miller after he refused to cut his two hour film down to ninety minutes then the studio hired a new director to make the edits & change the original ending but, Tim got the last laugh because the studio never bothered to secure the TV distribution rights so Tim bought them, and Tim was given the footage cut from his original version of the film because the studio saw it as garbage. So Tim took the footage the studio gave him, painstakingly restored his cut of the film AT HIS OWN HOUSE, because he had the TV distribution rights Tim made sure his version was the one that aired on basic cable and there wasn't a damn thing the Studio could do about it.
'Killers" is a good album. Gotta luv Eddie, always nice to see him at their concerts back in the day, and the Iron maiden Album art was killer too. Sad the loss of vinyl album art, now.
Did the film end with the detective all burned up and the cemetery, or with the girl bending down to pet the zombie dog and getting a slug shot at the camera for a jump scare ending? I've only seen the dog ending, so this was new to me.
@@Zafocaine The ending on this video was what the director originally wanted, but the studio replaced it with the dog shooting out a slug at Cynthia. Until the Blu Ray was released, the only way you could see the director's preferred ending was to catch the TV version, which also included a deleted scene of Cynthia and some sorority sisters making cookies, oblivious to slugs scampering around.
3:50 that comment was so disgusting. Bad Brendon! Bad! (continues to watch video...) 10:50 wow! There’s so many zingers in this video Hostess might have to file a copyright strike. 18:39 Miller is like Coors: a cheap beer with a great tag line, which is what he says
this was an automatic thumbs up the moment i saw the thumbnail :P i love this movie like i love evil dead, monster squad, the blob, abominable dr. phibes, popcorn... laid back campy fun movies that know how to use laughs AND scares correctly. great choice Brandon.
I just finished watching the In Search of Darkness-documentary before I saw this, and while there are plenty of great people being interviewed in that movie, Tom Atkins really left an impression of being a great guy next to being a great actor, talking about these roles with such joy that it really shows that he cared about them and horror-movies in general. A real class act.
Pretty sure Gordon the cat is named for Stuart Gordon and the black cat was chosen for being the first animal Herbert West reanimated after returning to the U.S..
I love this movies! You and the patreon supporter have made my day 😁 My favorite character was JC and it was one of those movies I would rent the most because of him and the cop lol I hadnt seen anyone tackling this movie yet. So... Thrill me 😎
Surprised you didn't mention that the ending with burnt Tom Atkins and the Aliens in the cemetery was the Director's Cut ending. The theatrical version ending had the dog coming back and infecting Cynthia. Love this movie and this review. It's a favorite of mine to watch on Halloween.
There is an alternate ending where Cynthia goes to pet the dog in front of the burning house and the dog spits out a slug. They don't show the aliens searching in the cemetery.
Brandon reviewed the restored/director-cut version. The original theatrical/VHS cut has the infected dog ending. I don't think the original cut is even available for sale now.
Let's not forget the film's original theatrical ending (the UFO ending was added later to home video releases). The movie originally ends when the dog who caused the bus accident returns and approaches Cynthia. As Cynthia bends down toward it, the dog opens its mouth and a slug jumps out toward her.
Oh my gosh I was so excited to see this come up on my feed. I love this movie and watch it whenever I run across it. Big dose of nostalgia for me on this one.
wearing the Thrill Me shirt now! whenever I wear it outside people, especially cashiers, always look concerned because he is holding a shotgun on the front.
