Brandy is nicknamed “The Vocal Bible.” Her harmonizing skills are top notch. She had the blessings of Whitney Houston as a singer. Both Brandy and Monica were teenagers when they were signed. People compared them all the time, so this was a HUGE deal when this song was released. They won a Grammy for this.

Monica songs: For You I Will, Angel Of Mine, Before You Walk Out of My Life. Brandy Songs: Almost Doesn't Count, Have You Ever, I Wanna Be Down, Sitting Up In My Room They were both literally teenagers when discovered, Brandy had her debut at 14, Monica at 13. Both of them just ridiculously talented. Christina Aguilera has said that she listened to Brandy's Never Say Never album on repeat in order to get her runs. They do not get the respect they deserve.

This song was so popular it won a Grammy for best R&B Duo, and yet on Brandy's album that the song is on (Never Say Never) I thought the even better song was Angel In Disguise. Definitely worth a listen. Other female duos that you should try are Zhane' (Hey Mr. DJ, Sending My Love, Crush) or Floetry (Say Yes, Getting Late, Floetic).

This song was heavy on the rotation back in the day, and is still in my playlists. The guy in the video is the famous actor, Mekhi Phifer. If you've heard Eminem's song Lose Yourself from the movie 8 Mile, he's even mentioned by name which was weird because he was playing a character named David, or Future Porter in the movie.

When you think about it, it wasn't weird that Eminem mentioned Mekhi Phifer by his real name instead of his character name. He said that this is no movie and no Mekhi Phifer because this was HIS reality and his life. Mekhi Phifer is an actor and he makes movies. That could also have served as a shout out since Mekhi was fairly well known at that time.

13 weeks at number 1 on the Billboard US chart in 1998. What a great song. I still play it all the time. Great reaction. There are excellent songs from the late 90’s and early 2000’s to be discovered. Especially by Darkchild (producers)

These two are great R&B singers that came out around the same time. As per usual the media tries to pit women against each other so there was a rumor that they didnt like each other. This song was their answer to squash that rumor. They recently dud a versus battle. I like them both.

So Brandy was probably the bigger star, but they both started out at a really young age. Brandy did movies and also had her own TV show called Moesha. If you are familiar, her brother is the singer and reality star Ray J. Some of Brandy's best songs were i wanna be down, sittin up in my room, have you ever, broken hearted featuring wanya morris from boyz ii men, and almost doesn't count. Monica had don't take it personal, for you i will (space jam soundtrack), angel of mine, so gone, slow jam (with usher). I think Monica did some TV and movies too though.

This was produced by Rodney Jerkins aka Darkchild Productions, and most of his productions were absolutely brilliant. If you listen to "If you had my love - JLo", If I told you that - Whitney", "He wasn't man enough for me - Toni Braxton", "It's not right but it's okay - Whitney", you'll see the pattern of production which was of it's time. Brandy's the one with the braids, and she was the far more famous performer of the two. Finding fame when she was still a teenager, she had several hits and a successful sitcom, Moesha. She is Snoop Dogg's cousin, and her brother Ray-J is to blame for making the Kardashians famous through his sex tape with Kim. I was an Indie Rock hipster in the 90s, so this wasn't my cup of tea back then. I quite like it hearing it now, either for nostalgic reasons or simply for the fact that it's no longer the 90s and I don't have to feel weird for liking a huge pop ballad. Even now, I Iove the groove, but feel like the two singers were too similar in tone, pitch, and delivery for this to actually feel like two different singers with different perspectives. "The *Girl* Is Mine", the successful duet from which this song winkingly borrows its title, paired Paul McCartney with Michael Jackson, who capitalized on their distinct vocal styles instead of sounding like the same person to a casual listener. One has to pay very close attention to know who is singing which part in "The Boy Is Mine", though... which feels like a miss, to me, from a producer's standpoint. What would I know, though? LOL This is one of the best-selling singles of all time. That said, those 90s numbers were often corrupted by record store presales. I worked in record stores back then and we had BOXES AND BOXES of unsold copies of this single. More than any record we ever sold. And *all* of those counted toward's the single's platinum status, chart position, and placement on "all-time" lists, even though they were never even unboxed. It was a big hit, but I think it was also a clear Payola situation, and not an organic hit built on listener demand. Popular music has always had hits like that, though, so even if it feels like a cheat, it fits in perfectly with the overarching story, and it's as legitimate a hit as any other.

I remember how Brandy was felt intimated by working with Chaka Khan who could blow the doors off of a building. I know you've reacted to some Chaka, but not the late 70's classic "I'm Every Woman." You should.

Brandy has such a unique timbre. If you want to hear more of her and you have Disney plus acct, I def recommend checking out Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella. She's Cinderella and Whitney Houston is her fairy godmother. But for most impressive discography personally I have to go with Monica. I recommend listening to Don't take it personal, Before you walk out of my life, Angel of mine, and So gone.

Oh nice, this was one of the songs I suggested. So glad you picked it and liked it. I'm sure you can guess how I feel about it. I'm not super into R&B either, but growing up with this song on MTV, this will always be a stand-out hit for me.
