An Old Fashioned is an Old Fashioned, right? Well, not in Wisconsin. In Wisconsin, an old fashioned is different and that will never change, no matter how snooty we all get about cocktails and what they are "supposed" to be. Jeffrey has created his own version of the Brandy Old Fashioned, by way of Wisconsin, that pays homage to the mid-western classic.
Small Screen delivers beautifully crafted videos about cocktails, bartending, mixology, food and cooking, each and every week. SUBSCRIBE to Small Screen: bit.ly/MF8FOT

One variation on the WISCONSIN Brandy Old Fashion you may not know. It is the "Cabin Old Fashion". It substitutes real maple syrup for simple syrup. Came out of necessity from a trip to the north woods cabin when someone forgot the simple syrup. Try it. It adds a new dimension.

I love the snowcone take on the brandy oldfashioned you use instead of topping it "sweet" or "sour" in my experience making them using your recipe it's a drink that gets better as you sip and the dilution sets it. Yum!

A fantastic Wisconsin institution. It's like the Sangria of the North.

As soon as I saw the brandy in the title slide with parentheses I CONFIRMED this would be a Wisconsin video. Well told, and I’m surprised they didn’t ask for it sweet, sour etc. 🥂😂

The stepping stone between the two drinks perhaps being "The Improved Whiskey Cocktail". With a Wiconsin old fashioned having a similar flavour profile to a Brandy Crusta - maraschino, curacao, brandy, citrus - but cleverly using the muddled orange juice to dissolve the sugar that doesn't otherwise dissolve happily in a spirit. Makes alot of sense

The Brandy Crusta is a tasty cocktail, but I have to strongly disagree that its flavor is anything like a Wisconsin style brandy old fashioned.

Oddly enough, this is what my bar book lists as just "Old Fashioned."

This is definitely how it's done. Being from Wisconsin, it's a super common drink. But I asked for one in Chicago, and the bartender looked at me like I was speaking French.

I'm from Wisconsin and the at home method is- an old fashioned glass with ice (crushed if you care) 1/8 to 1/4 of old fashion mix (ether home made or store bought) 3/4 of the glass Brandy and fill to the top with favorite lemon lime soda ( I like 50/50) and topped with cherries or olives what ever you like better (me olives) p.s. If there is any grammar errors screw off I'm drunk

First drink I had when I turned 21. I asked for an old fashioned with brandy instead of whiskey...still the best drink I’ve ever had. They used Hartley’s VSOP 10/10

Born & raised in WI & have never had an Old Fashioned with all the cutting & mashing or imported "cherries" like this guy. I have however already used snow instead of a fancy bag of mashed ice tho.. ;) If for some crazy reason your WI bar has no Jero old fashioned mix(which is rare) just toss one or two sugar cubes worth of sugar in a glass with regular ice, a dash or two of bitters, add your brandy or whiskey, top off with 7up/Sprite for sweet, 50/50 or Squirt for sour. Dare ya go hey!

I had this exact same thing happen, but it was a bar in Chicago and the only brandy they had in the bar was blackberry. Ugh it was like rocket fuel. I never send back a drink...but I did that time. After the second one came back the same, the bar manager came over and we had almost the exact same interaction that Morgenthaler related.

I appreciate the attention to the Wisconsin variation, but... No Wisconsin bartender would use crushed ice to make an old fashioned. We just use a scoop of standard bar ice. Also, Luxardo cherries are way too fancy. We use the cheap ones soaked in bright red carcinogenic food dye.

Could one make this drink with 2 ounces of brandy, ice cubes from the fridge, Mello Yello (for the orange flavor and sugar), a dash of Cherry 7-Up (for the cherry and the soda water)?

Lol thanks man for doing it right. I love the frothed egg whites on mines. It could be a amaretto or a regular whiskey sour - either way I’m about that frothed egg whites and heavy amounts of cask strength bourbon

Do they also do their traditional Whisky Old Fashioned with fruit? For Brandy it sounds delicious, but i'm not sure if i wanted to do that with bourbon..
@eggrolldog
@eggrolldog 10 лет назад
You can do it both ways with whiskey. The brandy method is great with Southern Comfort and Irish whiskey.

I liked my Old fashioned with orange and lemon peels, and maybe the cherry and orange slice as a garnish, but i dont think the fruit mash would fit my pallet together with whiskey. But i may just try it out anyways :P

Try it with rye whiskey, very bold on taste and would have been perhaps the most traditional rendition of the drink.

They should call it wisconsin old fashioned then. As you said old fashioned calls for any liquer so whiskey or brandy, the making should be the same. Your bartender made a correct job, client was the ignorant party. And it was only luck that you knew that wisconsin thing.

If she asked for a Brandy Old Fashioned and he used cognac he was incorrect and good on this guy for catching it. As a Wisconsin native the only way to have an Old Fashioned is with Brandy.

+ThatGuyWithThePhace Thats what i was wondering, because many bartenders make an Old Fashion the very same way. muddle a cherry and an orange slice with bitters and sugar, then add liquor, and the really bad bartenders top it with club soda!

I'll have to take your word for it because it sounds and looks horrible. Nothing appealing to all that crap mashed up in the bottom of the glass and brandy poured over it.
