Thanks Yeah the beans and corn turned out really good in that particular plot.

In one of my food plots this year, not this video I seeded one half onto the fluffy disced up soil and then cultipacked them in. The other half I cultipacked the loose soil and then seeded and cultipacked again. The side the I seeded on loose soil and worked them in a little bit took off and grew much faster. We had 1-2 weeks of no rain after planting so that’s why the side where the seeds were on top of the soil were not germinating.

Thanks 👍 These plots I prepared for tillage this year. There was a bunch of tall weeds and grass that grew in. I mowed them down and sprayed when they grew back. I probably could have no tilled but I probably wouldn’t have gotten that good of growth because if the lack of rain. I think for no till you need to plant sooner than aug. Like around mid July because with no till you have slower germination. I will be trying Jeff Sturgis’s buckwheat method next year in a few plots.

The only dry stretch we had was right after I planted in early and mid August and another 2 week dry period in mid July. Other than that we have had a pretty average year for rainfall.

Usually 1 or 2 or the lowest setting on the seeder. Less is more when it comes to brassicas. It’s very easy to over seed brassicas.

I will have to look into it. I was either going to use sourgum or Egyptian wheat.

I am not worried about the screen attracting deer because we done use the screen for access and completely avoid the food plots as best as we can when exiting stands. A lot of the times deer end up in the alfalfa field on the other side of the screen before dark. The main reason I want a screen in this plot is to make the field feel smaller so maybe bucks will feel comfortable in the plot during daylight.

Not really sure what you mean. “When did you start the grow” if you are wondering when it was planted, it was planted aug 13

I use 2-3 ounces per gallon. I know it’s 2 quarts per acre but when you mix up 10 gal worth it easier to just go 3 oz per gallon and you get a good kill. With my boomless atv sprayer it takes about 30 gallons to cover an acre good. 20 fast. I wouldn’t go any more than 3 and no less than 2.

Yes, drag or just atv tires. If you have a disc you can even just lightly till the seed in. Anything you can do to get the seed under the soil 1/4-1/2in deep is better than on top.

Yes you could. I have used a drag in the past after seeding brassicas and got great results. Otherwise just pack with atv tires. If your going to get a good amount of rain within a few days after planting you don’t need to cover the seeds leave them on top of the soil. But if your not getting rain use a drag/harrow or atv tires to help cover the seeds a little.

@@bamafever92 planted all kinds of food plots with out a cultipacker. Dragged fields with a chunk of chain link fence with a pallet on it for a little weight. Now have a 13 foot cultimulcher but can fit through wood to one field so still drag it.

For sure. You need a lot of rain to get good germination when they aren’t covered up with a cover crop or some soil. I have since learned not to cultipack before seeding.

If you get a good rain 1 in or more your good that way but if you don’t your seeds will roast in the sun on top of the soil. I like to broadcast right on top of the loose ground and either cultipack or lightly disc to get the seed under the ground. Ive never had issues with my seed being too deep.
