I am from Belgrade, Serbia, which is 3 times bigger than Bratislava and I've spent a few weeks there a couple of years ago. It felt so calming and much less intense than Belgrade and I really wanted to move there. I've almost made it but, as per usual in life, some stupid stuff came into way and the plan just collapsed. I will make sure to visit the city again soon, it appears like it's doing good to my nerves...

I'm a native of Bratislava and I miss Saint Martin's Cathedral in this video. Bratislava (Pressburg) was the coronation site and legislative center and capital of the Kingdom of Hungary from 1563 to 1783, eleven Hungarian kings and eight queens were crowned in St Martin's Cathedral. Most Hungarian parliament assemblies were held here from the 17th century until the Hungarian Reform Era, and the city has been home to many Hungarian, German and Slovak historical figures.

The main problem with the train station is, that due to land ownership things it can not be rebuild/renewed, because some people wanted to use the law to get big bucks from state to buy their land around and under te station. From my understanding, it was someone from the parcelling office, that intentionally made some "mistakes", and put land under a public station to private owners, who then later demanded overblovn prices (and still do), but contrary to their expectations, state just didn´t bought it from them. And that is why it looks so bad, and probably will for a long time.
@viktorhamsik
@viktorhamsik 2 года назад
Just to add, this ownership situation has progressed a bit, it is just impossible to gather big enough investment at the moment, as other parts of Slovakia are in need of investment too and by rules of eurofunds have bigger priority

And don't eat it in Bratislava. It's not typical for this region and they make it only for tourists mostly, it is expensive and not so tasty. If you want to try real bryndza, then you have to go to mountains of Central Slovakia to the places called salaš, where it is made and also food from it is tasty. Real bryndza consists of at least 60% sheep milk, what you get in Bratislava or other places here in the west in restaurants is mostly just a regular cow cottage cheese instead. People often eat it with halušky, which is made of 2/3 potatoes and the rest is flour, restaurants usually make it solely from flour, but I know some restaurants in the area of Trnava, where real halušky are made, here we eat it mostly with cabbage and a little bacon, it's also tasty.

Hey Mark! We day-tripped Bratislava from Vienna last week. We LOVED it. Just the right size for a nice day trip. I found it affordable vs cheap as well, and the crowds were MUCH SMALLER than Vienna. We pretty much fit everything in we needed to. BTW - This was the only city we visited (Munich/Salzburg/Bratislava/Budapest) where I had to speak German to our lunch waiter because he did not speak any English - it was a cool experience). Did you notice the Soviet mosaic in the train station? Told the Sputnik story on the right side... it's in very good shape! A few observations - the train from Vienna to/fr Bratislava was a combined OBB and Slovak train with cars from both companies. The Slovakian cars had AC and 220 volt plugs. The OBB cars had neither! Also, booking the train ticket on the Slovakian carrier's website was significantly cheaper than the OBB site. I found the same thing when we went to Budapest to/fr Vienna. The Hungarian carrier was about half-price for the same seat compared to the OBB. CHEERS!!!

Food is heavier because people used to work here hard going up and down over the hills taking trips to other places it was a lot of work (specially at field) and most of common thing around was to have animal like sheep(sheep cheese naturally really fat food but keeps you up and working), cow or chickens so many peoples where used to this heavy food i mean even national food is basically sheep cheese with dumplings (eggs,flour,salt...)

Do not worry about climbing up and down in Bratislava. Is mostly flat city. Do not forget to move a bit away from centre of city along the Danube. There are asphalted paths and Danube has little pebble beaches where you can rest and watch the nature. Do not forget to go and try rich man baguette. It is affordable and all who were studying in Bratislava has it at least once. Is there open for more then 20 years and it is easy and quick street food. Do not forget to return drink cans to the shop they return you portion of your money for them. Do not go to Bratislava just once. It is really nice city with better weather then Prague. It has more then 300 hours of sunshine in a year then Prague. So longer and brighter summer.

Hi, can I ask a silly question? Are the plug sockets the same as the rest of Europe? Many thanks

St Michael's Gate is closed at the moment (and covered in scaffolding) so you can't climb to the top. The 3 day tourist card is only 28 euros (and includes free travel) so although not hugely money saving, it is convenient.

Please make a video on the best places to see fashion history (like for example rococo era or Victorian era). Also for architecture like for example if we love rococo and baroque architecture what cities are top list to make a trip to?! Just a suggestion of course. Thanks for your honest videos!

I thought Slovakia wasnt really safe for foreigners especially for Muslims since I heard its quite a racist country.

@@kinginigo8007 the majority here is very kind and calm, but sometimes you can find someone who do not welcome you. I am Muslim, and I live in peace. What Slovak people need is dealing with foreign people because they are not used to that especially with Arab people. Good and bad is basic of every thing😊

I will probably offend many locals from Bratislava now, but ... 1. Bratislava is few times more expensive than any other city in Slovakia and maybe just as expensive as High Tatras mountain resort (i mean, what would you expect from the capital right?!) 2. Bratislava is more of a culture mix, sometimes you will meet there more foreigners on the streets than Slovaks, so if you want to get more into Slovak culture, this shouldn't be your only stoppage in Slovakia 3. not only for me but also for my friends, Bratislava feels a little chaotic, sometimes it's hard to navigate through, sometimes it surprises you with lack of something you would expect from such modern city 4. It also lacks a true and beautifully organized historical centre, which you can find in many cities around Slovakia (for example Košice, Žilina, Levoča, Kremnica, Bardejov, Martin ...), not mentioning the US embassy's fence blocking half of the historical square ... I'm not saying Bratislava is bad place to visit, just wanted to let you know Slovakia is much bigger than that and there are maybe EVEN more beautiful and EVEN cheaper places to visit

haha... so nice here all these facts about my hometown :) aaand bit funny ... Nice video. To rest of you all: Come to Bratislava, its our Little Big City :) Go to cocktail bar speakeasy: in the video view toward Michaels Gate, there is a green house Urban Bistro on the left side. Go there and upstairs to restrooms but on the other side is an old wardrobe, open it like into Narnia. Enjoy the best drinks :) Dont eat on Michals gate street, tourist traps only. Go to Namestie SNP (Square SNP) and ask for Flagship - Bratislavska restauracia. Its a restaurant inside old church or theatre and have the best dumpling and food in centre.

Bratislava castel was burn down when Napoleon was there, so inside is almost nothing. You can see it from outside and gardens, but inside is nothing, waste of time. But there are great views from it on Bratislava.

If you walk like 1km from the city center you will be even more surprised with the prices of food/drinks. There is a huge difference between food/drink prices directly in the center and the rest of the city. :)
