Merida assumes that "mend the bond torn by pride" means to repair the tapestry. But that doesn't work. It's only when she mends the relationship by genuinely apologizing to her mum that the spell is undone.

I was of the opinion that the "bond" was actually four parts. There was the tapestry, which was the obvious one, and there was the bond with her Mother as well. But the other two were the bond between the four clans, that she had broken, by her decision to embarrass them by beating them with the archery competition, and the last was Mordau. They don't explicitly say, but I believe the four clans were the descendants of the four brothers and Meirda needed to release the prince from his spell, to redeem him, when his pride tore the land apart.

The song at the beginning is called Touch the Sky by Julie Fowlis. She sings a lot of traditional music in Scottish Gaelic. Worth checking out even if you don't understand it.

My bf is Scottish-American and his name is Angus. Whenever we watch this movie I tell him he's such a good horse XD He says, "Angus is a name of Scottish ROYALTY!"

I am still amused by their take on the Will O' Wisps. Their description saying they will lead you to your destiny could be seen as accurate, if your destiny is to drown in a swamp. In mythology, they are best known as floating lights that lead people deep into swamps and bogs to get lost and/or drown.

EXACTLY!!!! We here in Germany call them „Irrlichter“ a combined of two words First word being „Irr-„ (wich is a shortened Version for the words „verirren“ (translated into „getting lost“) or „umherirren“ (translated in to „meander“ or „roaming around without a destination ) and the second Word meaning „Licht“ wich is translated in to lights and i think as a German we did a perfect job with meaning them „meandered-Lights“

The "bond" that was broken was the bond between the mother and the daughter... hence, why the mother only changes back when Merida says she loves her. :-)

The reason there would have been war is because they invited all three allied clans to present their sons to compete for the chance to have an alliance marriage, uniting the clans, and making them family. For Meirda to compete against all of them, and effective reject all of them, would have been a deadly insult. Essentially inviting them to come over and tell them they were all not good enough. The insult would be worse because they were allies. At least this is my take on it. I also love the complexity of the witch's condition for lifting the spell. "Mend the bond, torn by pride." There were four levels to that. There was the physical bond of the tapestry to mend, there was the relationship with Merida's Mother to mend, which was torn by pride by BOTH of them. Third was to repair the bond of the four clans, to get them to reaffirm their friendship. And lastly, in killing and freeing Mordou she released the prideful prince from his curse, who seemed regretful of his actions, before he faded.

Actually, those wisps are based off of real life ones. They're said to attract individuals to swampy terrain where they proceed to die, either by sinking or being eaten (they being humans)

Yeah its one of the rare movies that focus more on Mother-daughter bond. The witch wasn't wrong cause the spell did help in changing the perspective of not only Elinor but also Merida herself and also bought peace to Mordo. Man you really need to watch Brother Bear and Treasure Planet if you want something similar. You'd be crying your eyes out to Brother Bear especially.

Brave reminds me of Mulan in the sense that it’s not the typical princess story where the princess meets a guy, they fall in love, and get their happily ever after. Instead they they both focus on family. I read this story once where the ending implied that the protagonist and her love interest would marry each other but the marriage wasn’t part of the story itself. The author explained that they didn’t see marriage as an end to something but instead a new beginning bc so much more can happy after. Marriage itself doesn’t even have to be something one has to do to be happy either. That’s why I love these type of stories even more bc I agree that things don’t have to be a certain way for one to be happy.

I have a theory that the durpy kid that was competing for marriage was actually a competent archer and was just botching it to avoid marriage, taking the passive route as opposed to Merida's stubborn ferocity.

This film did a great job showing what a mother/daughter bond is! I was 16 yo when I tried to go watch this film with my mother hoping it would help her understand our complicated (and violent) relationship. It failed 😅 But it helped me to forgive her and understand her better. I'm a bit sad Brave doesn't get the recognition it deserve

My father immigrated from Scotland when he was a child, his father was in the Scottish navy during ww2, they moved to Burlington Ontario in the late 50s and he worked at the Graphic for years, my dad went back to visit a few times but I’ve never been, it’s on my bucket list tho I already have my itinerary planned. Merida is a Tom boy and I was just like her when I was a kid, always out side in the forests n in the creek, climbing the escarpment , never was forced into marriage tho lol

The first time my daughter watched this she got about 1/3rd of the way in and broke into tears! She refused to watch the rest and I don't believe that she has to this day! She was around 7 or 8 and is now 14! I thought she would love it and was shocked that it affected her in that manner? When I asked her why she said she didn't like the way the daughter was talking to and treating her mother and couldn't continue to watch it because it was so very wrong! She is a very wise and well rounded young woman and I'm extremely proud of her intuitive nature 😊

So glad you did this one. I've seen the beginning - twice - at my son and DIL's house. They had it playing for the grandkids but the television went off when we went out for activities so I never got to see the story. I was missing so much! Now I understand why there was a bear in her house.

Hey! Love the stuff. If you’re curious as to what Merida said in Ralph Breaks the Internet, she said roughly “I gave my mom a cake, she turned into a big bear, my old one (father) tried to do her in! If that’s not a pure mess I don’t know what is!” In the trailer, and then “long May your chimney smoke and never May a mouse leave your pantry with a tear in his eyes. Come back soon!” In the movie I think. The latter of which essentially means “I hope you live a long time and prosper” This is one of my favorite princess movies. I really enjoy Celtic myth and while my expertise is more focused on Irish mythology, i absolutely loved this movie.

New subscriber as of today. Today I watched your reaction to: Coco Monsters inc Finding Nemo Tangled And Inside Out I love how genuine you are. You pay attention, pick up on details and give meaningful commentary at the end. Lots of other RU-vidrs give fake or over the top reactions and cut basically as soon as the movie is done. So surface level. So thank you for the extra time you put in. I’m 31 and was raised on Disney lol totally Disney kid at heart to this day and I go to all the movies still in theatres! I’m so cool hahahaha I’m not a parent yet (hopefully soon) and your perspective as a parent on these is unlocking a new deeper level of appreciation for them. Looking forward to your future content while also binging what you’ve put out so far. I wish I could experience these movies again for the first time so this is scratching a serious itch being able to see an adult react for the first time!

you should check out prince of egypt, a lot of songs you would have to cut out of youtube version of video but really great story of moses- I'm not religious but still enjoyed. Great video too, a lot of crossover between irish and scottish, with great ginger hair lol!

I love the unpredictable plot to this story. My mother and I never get along, so this story touched me deep. It became my favourite Disney/Pixar movie. Great reaction. I welled up when it got to her throwing the tapestry over her mother bear at the stone henge too 😉.

Merida is the only princess from Pixar Studios, all of the others are from Disney, that's why there is that joke in Wreck It Ralph about they don't understanding her cause she's from "the other studio"

I read that this movie switched directors (I think) part way through which may account for the confusion many have about the bear transformation part. I’m not sure it was in the original concept for the movie and the plot very closely resembles the movie brother bear. There are some analyses on RU-vid discussing this. It’s still an enjoyable movie, but I do wonder what might have been.

This is a beautiful representation of my Scottish heritage. I am 35% Irish and 20% Scottish and the rest a mixture of the United Kingdom and Europe. I am American of course though.

It's very well written, but unfortunately, also very underrated, at least for right now, hopefully the film will continue to to gain respect and fans as time goes on!😃 Oh, also, the fourth Clan/Family that you kept asking about is the Clan of Merida and her Dad (and everyone else in their family, of course).

The ending the queen had to unleash her mamma bear side. Which add in her Scottish blood I’m surprised she didn’t cause more damage to Mor’du. I do wish we got a sequel maybe exploring the other clans but we do get a few clips later on and there’s the Merida in ONCE.

Of course Its pixar! Its an actually original story that doesnt copy a fairytale, or a purchased franchise, and has competent and strong female lead that is a princess. Couldn't be a disney movie.

So there’s a theory that the old lady in this movie is Boo from monsters inc obviously as she got older but still in a quest to try and find the supposed “Kitty” from her childhood. Cool Easter egg there’s a carving there’s a carving of Sully from monster inc kinda adding fuel to the fire. Would explain the carving like yes they throw in Easter eggs but if you look at a movie for what I is ( a movie) they wouldn’t have wasted time drawing or animating that in for no reason, right? It’d also explain how she was able to disappear the moment Merida Looked away traveling per doors perhaps?? 👀👀🤣 just a fun little theory but a cool thought
