@@jovisolorio thats what i think too. The border of the dead that allow them to visit the living world has that machine to match their face to the pictures, so their appearance in the world of the dead has to match the pictures their families put up

I think its actually the age you are loved and remembered the most, as im sure coco's mom didn't die at 21-24

This, and the fact that Héctor is wearing shoes at the end of my two favorite details about the movie, even though the former is something that you can't tell from watching it. It's so sweet! I live for this shit! 😀😀😀😀

It's also a curious name, considering Dante's Inferno, which is italian, but still tells a story about a man's journey on the afterlife

I don't think there is a dik joke there, chorizo are served mostly sliced and is a bit spicy, maybe they where hinting that he cant handle the spice of a chorizo

@@ZeldaWolf2000 I would actually love to see that (if we get a sequel), how afterlife has changed for Ernesto, Hector and Imelda. After all Hector now is recognized in the living world as the great artist he was, but in the land of the dead he isn't living in an ivory tower like Ernesto was but still waiting humbly in line to see if he can cross over to see his living family.

Conscience does that. If you did something wrong, your conscience will find a way to tell the tale, wherer you want it to keep it a secret or not.

​@Rosa Villanueva Conscience does but so does hubris. Some of the worst people have been thrilled to find people created films about them. Ernesto projected an untouchable, almost godlike aura, and it's rare that happens without someone purposefully cultivating that.

They did six years worth of research in preparing to make this film, and it was _very_ thorough. The extras on the Blu-Ray were amazing...

Disney actually tried to trademark Día de los Muertos? I don't know why I'm surprised, I really shouldn't be at this point.

@@HiddenWindshield As far as I can remember they wanted to trademark the name for the movie but there was a Mexican movie being made with the Día de Muertos title already, so they couldn’t. Headlines in Mexico made it look like they wanted to trademark anything that had to do with the holiday.

Wow, I love the detail. It seems so vibrant and absolutely beautiful. I agree though that’s messed up to try and trademark a holiday that’s a Mexican tradition. Holidays (celebrations) should be respected from other countries and cultures as long as no one is getting hurt by celebrating that holiday.

Coco, inside out, monsters inc, and people won’t give it its credit but ratatouille are absolutely top tier

I consider it my favorite movie because it has such a home run of a story, as well as being a musical that doesn't feel like a musical, and every single song is awesome. The knuckles dragging bit gets me every time xD It's all so completely natural, and has such strong foundations in reality that it's hard NOT to love. Music has even been shown to benefit dementia patients! So Coco remembering thanks to the song isn't some deus ex machina, it's founded in science!

Soul is so underrated

This movie went out the year our dad died. I watched it few of months after he passed. It really hit us, me and my two sisters. Our dad also used to sing to us when we were kids and we have our own special song that we would sing together.

I feel the same. When this movie came out my grandma was going through the same stages of dementia. And seeing this movie game me hope that things would get better. (I related to this movie becuase it reminds me of my family. And I'm mexican) And this October it will be the first year anniversary of her death. And I plan to watch this movie again so that way I can feel her spirit return to me. And to remind me that as long as I remember her. She will always be with me.

Especially because music does help with memory too, hit me hard too

Same with my great-grandmother, left with 5 small children. We don't know anything about my great-grandfather, and she would've 💯 succeeded in erasing him completely if it wasn't for the fact that they were an interracial couple and he was a white French immigrant, so their yykids came out lighter-skinned and/or with European features (hair color/texture, my grandfather had vibrant green eyes [which my mom and all her siblings inherited], one of my great-aunts straight-up looked like an unambiguous white lady)...and also his weird, foreign last name that we're continually asked to spell, lol. And that's basically the extent of we know about him: fresh-off-the-boat French immigrant and white. My great-grandmother was an incredibly strong, smart (though barely educated, as many black women were back in the day) and coureagous woman who started again from nothing to get her family through. She cyleaned houses and learned trades and, in the end, her and all of her children ended up thriving: some were successful busines owners, my grandfather was the first in his family to get a university degree, etc...so the joke's on the lazy loser who got left behind.

It was definitely a love letter to Mexico. I'm Mexican and when I heard this was coming out I was wary, especially since I live in Mexico and the story was going take place in present-day Mexico, which is a setting that Hollywood somehow never really seems to portray right (they're reductive at best and stereotypical at worst)...but I was sooo wrong! This turned out to be one of my favorite movies. They nailed it! It was critically acclaimed here too and beat all box-office records. I also took my parents to the theater (they're oldheads who still think animation is exclusively for children) and my dad cried! He still talks about "Coco" to this day. What a beautiful film!

I second this recommendation - the Book of Life is another wonderful movie about Día de Los Muertos.

I like your comment, just one little clarification on the animals thing: Dante is a special kind of dog called Xoloitzcuintle, which is originally from México, and our ancestors had this legend that said the Xoloitzcuintles were guide animals that helped you through this world to the other, while Pepita and the other colorful animals are called Alebrijes, that are practically colorful animal parts combined together in a way of art, normally being made as sculptures here, i don't know much about Alebrijes tho, i can't remember if they were originated by a legend or something like that, but both of them are part of Mexican culture.

@@claudiayarizethochoamungui1055 I read a little about alebrijes (I went on a fanfic-writing binge after this and went into research mode) and it seemed like they came from an artist's dream, and the name "alebrije" was kind of what he heard them saying. Then again, he may have had the idea floating around his head before he dreamed them; the articles didn't say. I had the impression that, movie-wise, this particular xolo dog also became an alebrije, but yes, he could cross back and forth before, and was Miguel's guide long before he changed colors. (When Miguel says "I have to find my great-great-grandfather," Dante leads him straight to Héctor... not to mention the fact that he could cross at all! He definitely had the xolo magic going on before the transformation.)

Yes and Alzheimer's patients often remember music above everything else, which accurately shows one of the themes, how deep music impacts us all.

Yeah, I remember when my grandfather got Alzheimers. When he looked at me and didn´t even know my name or who I was...man, I don´t even know how to describe that feeling. We in the family later did a small album together as a birthday gift for him where we all did different things. Most just partook in singing "I can´t stop loving you" by Toto, but I decided to do an intrumental version of "Tears in heaven" by Eric Clapton, partly because of the opening lyrics: "Would you know my name if I saw you in heaven?"

Yes, the original voice actress for Disney’s Cinderella got Alzheimers or Dementia and completely forgot that she voiced Cinderella but when people played the songs she could sing along and the songs brought her joy for reasons she wasn’t sure. There’s also several videos of an elderly former Russian Ballerina, the Prima Donna, confined to a wheelchair and mind ravaged from Dementia/Alzheimers but when they played one of the songs from Swan Lake she did the movements to the best of her abilities. Music unlocks something inside of all us

I live in Tucson, AZ. Someone made a pretend car tag with a picture of a flip-flop and the word “Chancla.” We busted up laughing when we saw it. It is amazing how fast la chancla can go from being on a foot to being a guided missile.

They never specified this in the movie. In fact, the whole point of remember me song seems like he was on the road but always was planning to come back for his family, but eventually the life just wasn’t for him

I would LOVE that! The World of Coco is so vibrant and De la Cruz would be a great villain to have in the game. I just hope they don't give that world the Little Mermaid treatment.

It's not that she had a century to get over, it's that she had nothing she needed to get over through her perspective. lol Btw, we barely know how Imelda really was in life and her character growth after death to assume she didn't got over things, we just know she wanted zero relationship with music and Hector and passed that on in life (she might have changed a lot after death, but the ones in life were still passing her lessons on). Not to mention the meanings behind it, Imelda was the rock of the family, she's described as strong woman, so obviously will take centuries to change her mind, we see that by the fact that even after knowing Hector was murdered she still couldn't forgive him right away. Her alegrife is also a giant feline, that is to represent how brave, determined & unbreakable she is. I personally think she did make peaces with music after death (got ""over"" it a bit), she was able to easily sing for Miguel and in front of thousands of people AND in from of Hector, she was also able to change her mind for Miguel _in one single night._ So she obviously wasn't as harsh about music as she was in life anymore to the point she allowed Miguel to follow the path that ""disgraced"" her family, trusting him. In conclusion, i understand what you mean - but you gotta realize this is just a 'positive speech', people hardly apply in their lives without help. Imelda is a classic latina mom/grandmother in it's core hence her personality (cultural), she's traumatized and feels overly responsible for her family well-being (psychological effects of events), everything matters when it comes to ""get over"" something (facts, feelings, perspectives, values, social relations, even environment), so you can't just request them to get over without rlly understanding why that person is the way it is.
