Clever Mulan proves her worth outside of her tradition-bound society when, disguised as male soldier "Ping," she bravely takes her father's place in China's Imperial Army. Helped by her outrageously funny guardian dragon Mushu and a lucky cricket named Cri-Kee, Mulan strives to earn the respect of her fellow warriors and their courageous Captain Shang. Mulan's adventures lead to a climactic battle atop the Imperial Palace, where her family's honor and the fate of the Emperor and all of China rests in her hands.

The great thing about Mulan is that she has no fighting experience and knows there's a huge likelihood she could be hurt or killed, yet she goes anyway to save her father's life. That's some real inner strength.

which is why i like the animated version so much more. in the 90s version, mulan is a relatable girl who has no idea how she fits into society, and yet when she realizes her father doesn’t stand a chance on that war, she is willing to sacrifice her life for his, and works so hard to do her best. so it wasn’t some preexistent power that made her an amazing warrior, it was all about inner strength. such a better message for the girls watching.

Actually, the real Mu Lan was trained in riding horses and the martial arts. She was more like a tomboy since her family didn't have sons. Otherwise, she'd never survive the rigors of actual combat and soldier life.

In the live action, they really messed up by giving her special powers from birth. One of the aspects of this movie that makes Mulan so incredibly brave and amazing is that she takes her father's place NOT KNOWING how to fight. She puts her life on the line with no skills, and still turns into a great war hero. That's true strength, not being born with special abilities.

And it’s one of the reasons why the live action movie bombed in China. As it turns out to Disney’s surprise, the Chinese populace actually admire a hard worker who makes progress and not someone who gets a head start through powers.
@swanpride

EXACTLY!!! And it is pretty much a learning curve for her. Also, an important aspect of the movie is that Mulan first tries to act like a stereotypical woman and fails, and then she tries to act like a stereotypical man and fails too - it is only when she leaves all the gender nonsense aside and uses her smarts that she starts to succeed. Because it doesn't matter if she is a woman or a man, what matters is that she is MULAN.

Which is curious since it's a bit closer to the actual legend, Mulan was already a badass fighter she taught herself to fight and was really good at it, but yeah Disney messed up with giving her magic powers.

Like the fact that the first half of the movie is your typical Disney musical, but then, in the BIGGEST, MOST ABRUPT mood change in Disney movies, A Girl Worth Fighting For cuts off mid-sentence to the destroyed village and the horrors of war, and from that point on there's no more songs.

My favorite theory to do with this movie: The reason the eyes of the dragon above the ancestor’s shrine glowed after Mulan left, and the Great Stone Dragon didn’t wake up, was because it already had been awakened: The spirit of the dragon, the most powerful guardian of the family, lives inside Mulan. And left with her to fight.

The live-action version is not a musical, and it's a waste of viewers' time in my estimation. Jet Li was selected to play the emperor, and Jason Scott Lee was selected to play the leader of the hun army (his name is not Shan Yu in this version of Mulan) along with many other talented Asian [and] American actors. The film did not milk the actors' talents for all that they could offer (Li didn't really do anything); I thought that the fight scenes were filmed stylishly but the choreography was mediocre. Rather than telling a story, I think that 'Mulan' 2020 is aimed fundamentally at making a statement. I don't regard this movie as art: I think that it's propaganda.

recommendation would be Hunchback of Notre Dame, underrated classic BUT fair warning, it's one of the darkest disney films. Also, fun thing to point out about Mulan, the reason the great stone dragon didn't awake was because when Mulan sat beneath the statue and had that moment in the storm where she made her decision, Mulan became the great protector of the family. She's the great dragon. And yes she killed over a thousand people, she actually has the highest kill count of any disney character. Also they were fighting the Huns not the Mongols. Huns from the west, Mongols from the east. They mentioned it in the beginning. Mulan is based off a Chinese legend and folk tale/song and varies pretty significantly.

5:05 In Chinese culture, along with most cultures that sought out matchmakers; arranged marriages to find the best or most compatible spouses for your sons or daughters was pretty common.. Asian families are totally into finding puns, good luck charms, and refining the skills needed to impress the matchmakers. Think of the whole process as online dating but before there was internet essentially. Matchmakers were tasked with judging sons and daughters to try and find compatibility with other people. People actually had jobs where they were pairing kids, or young adults with others to ensure prosperity to families. Here's an example test that they used to have the girls do. My mom, when she was younger, was taught to peel apples. Peeling apples is easy, peeling it so that the peel remains in one long piece without tearing it is slightly harder. Basically, if you could peel an apple without tearing or breaking it, it showed that you were a much better match for someone than someone who had broken apple peels if that makes sense.

In terms of what Mulan wants and her motivations, what I really loved and connected with her with (besides finally seeing an Asian in a Disney movie) is how what she wants in life is centered around family. Even in the beginning, it wasn't like she didn't want to get married per se, she even had a line about hoping she doesn't mess up because she knows that's the way to make her family proud and keep the family honor. Marriage is how honor is defined for her so she goes with it because what you do as an individual is a reflection of the family but sometimes those things were just not for you. And everything she did was with her family in mind - she didn't want to fight, she wanted to protect her father. As cool as individual self-empowerment through breaking tradition stories are, Mulan doesn't do that, she still sticks to the core tradition even though she's breaking what are considered norms. Culture and tradition are still on the core of your identity even if you end up navigating though it differently.

The names of some character are actually meaningful: - Shan Yu: strictly saying, it's not a name, it's a title (similar to a chief) - Mushu means 'miracle' or 'magic' - Chi Fu (the emperor's counselor) means 'to scare'; - the name that Mulan used while pretending to be a man (Fa/Hua Ping) is a Chinese pun meaning 'silly beauty' (literally 'flower pot')

The old princess movies were never about marrying a guy or a prince. That was just the bi-product of the actual story. Snow White wanted to be safe from her evil stepmother, got poisoned, and was saved by a true-loves kiss, that just so happened to have been from a prince. Cinderella wanted to go to the ball, not caring for the Prince at all. She just wanted to experience something fun, after having been abused and neglected by her stepmother and sisters for years. She didn't even know it was the prince when she danced with him. Bell, from Beauty and the Beast, got kidnapped by a beast, taught him to be more than a beast, and ended up loving him before she ever knew he was a cursed prince. Ariel, from the little Mermaid, was curious about humans, even more do after that statue of Erik fell down to the bottom of the ocean. She just wanted to see the human world, with her having to make the prince fall in love with, being a convenient way for the story to have some kind of pace and date-line. And here, we have Mulan, who decided to go into war, knowing she had no fighting experience, just to make sure her father wouldn't die in said war, saved an entire nation, and earned the respect and love of the general as a bi-product. A lot of people say that these movies are a stereotype of women having to be saved by a prince or marry one. But by narrowing the entire stories of these movies into that, they miss the broader picture. Yes, these women did end up marrying princes, and in Aurora's (sleeping beauty) and Snow White's case they did get saved by a prince. But that isn't what all their stories are about. Cinderella is about a woman who goes through abuse, but stays strong and keeps being an amazing and sweet person. Beauty and the Beast is about learning to love someone from what's on the inside, not the outside. The little Mermaid is about standing up for your dreams, even when someone your love, your family, is against it. Snow White is about found family. And Mulan is about going against tradition, being who you want to be, no matter what others say and fighting for what you believe in.

Oh, it's one of my favorites... Interesting fact: CGI was used for the most part to animate the Mongol attack. That's because they had to animate a lot of movement of the horses and that was too tiresome, if you think about it: every single horse has to be animated individually because they are having a slightly different camera angle on them and have a bit different movement. The stone head of the Big Dragon got the same treatment as the Magic Carpet in Aladdin - they used CGI to create the movement of the object and then wrapped it up in the hand-drawn piece. Man, I BEG YOU, watch Treasure Planet. It's a beautiful and breathtaking inter-galactic steam-punk adaptation of Stevenson's classic. Animation there is a beast. It comprises 3 types of animation (3D map out for large objects - trick also used in Tarzan, CGI for particular pieces/characters, and classic hand-drawn animation). It's the absolute gem in terms of how it looks. The music bits are spot-on and the fiery action is guaranteed!

Mulans' story was actually a famous old Chinese tale.It is nice to see stuff like Mulan and Kung Fu Panda, as a Chinese you know the crew did their homework and show people some of the Chinese culture. Other films made from Foreigners kinda made China really goofy. In 5000 years, we got so many great stroies, wish someone could make films or animes about them.

Mulan is one of my favourite "Disney princesses" because she wants so badly to make her family proud; she loves them, and is loved by them, but she doesn't excel at what her society expects from her, so she feels ashamed and frustrated. I find that personally something I could connect with more than if she had been very determined to be something against her family's wishes. I do think it's admirable when characters are independent, rebellious and know their own mind and what they want; but I think it's also rewarding to see someone who would love nothing more than to fulfill those expectations, who isn't setting out to rebel, find a path where they find a place to shine. What I especially love about the movie is that Mulan does what she does for love of her family, and when she returns hopeful that her accomplishments will earn her father's pride, we see that she never actually had to go do extraordinary feats to earn it. Her dad just needed to get his head out of his ass (or out of society's expectations), by fearing that he might have lost her, feeling her absence, and seeing just how deeply she loves him by leaving in his stead. The sword and the medallion doesn't mean anything compared to her and her love. That's why the ending always gets me.

The story is great obviously but the contrasts between the bright lively colors surrounding Aurora like the pinks and blues with dashes of other colors and then the grays, black, with the pop of venous green around Maleficent are beautiful! Also the painted backgrounds! Omg that movie is just gorgeous. I could go on forever talking about the art work in that movie.

This movie was the change I needed in my life when it came out. I love Disney movies but I was a tomboy in the early 1990s. Girls weren't allowed to play games, be into Role Playing Games, to like nerdy stuff, and while I loved the Little Mermaid and movies like it, Mulan hit me differently. Reflection perfectly encompassed what I felt about myself. How can I be myself when the world keeps telling me its wrong? The only person I had on my side was my Dad. He brought me VHS Godzilla movies to my surgeries, he bought me the anime that I showed interest in and he told me he was proud of me. When I came out, he was the first person on my side. So Mulan has a very special place in my heart. Fair warning though, Mulan II is...bad. Like character destroying bad.

Another oldie but goodie! 🔥 Watching you react to all these older Disney movies is giving me flashbacks to me watching the old VHS in my lounge room as a kid lol Lots of good memories are associated with this era of Disney for me. Mulan reminds me a lot of Moana, Brave and Frozen etc in the fact that even though there is a love interest (Shang), Mulan is a fighter who is fighting for what she believes is right and isn’t just doing it for the admiration of many or the pursuit of love but rather for the acceptance and approval of her dad who she clearly loves very much and who loves her equally. She didn’t set out to save all of China and bring down the Hun Army but she did that….and that’s why she’s a badass. Eddie Murphy as an animated character also is ALWAYS a win 😊❤️

God this movie is _brilliant._ I was 14 when it first released and I appreciate it more and more the older I get.

Such an interesting point about Mulan still not knowing what she wants. It's a unique take on a protagonist where the story isn't really about them, but something bigger, and Mulan was brave enough to face that. The Live-Action version commits a lot of sins character wise, and this is true here too. In the original, Mulan WANTED to fit in, and be the perfect daughter - that was her goal, and she was struggling with it. But when she saw that her father was probably going to die in war, she put aside absolutely all of her hopes to fit tradition and took his place. Such a selfless act. In the Live-Action she wanted to be a warrior from the start, was already good at it, and when she took her father's armor and sword it just didn't feel as heavy of a moment - instead it was sort of predictable and almost like she'd been waiting for the chance.

The Disney "Princess" movies are majorly misrepresented, honestly. And you'll realize that, as you continue to react to more of them. All of the golden age Disney princesses are strong characters that were designed to defy the tropey "damsel in distress" archetype. Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Mulan, Pocahontas, Tiana, even Cinderella. (ESPECIALLY Cinderella) might have the - "only looking for a prince to save her" - rep, but it's not at all true. With the exception of Snow White and Sleeping Beauty, all of the Disney princesses are their own heroes, with uniquely empowering and independent messages. If you keep doing the Disney animation route, I'd suggest "Princess and the Frog" , "Hercules" , or "Hunchback of Notre Dame" next. Those are the three most contemporary ones surrounding "Mulan". ((Also, all of 90's Disney "princess" classics are musicals. (With iconic bops.) Most were actually composed by the same team (Howard Ashman and Alan Menkin) who, starting with the Little Mermaid, created the trend of Disney being more "Broadway" and legit Musical Theatre in their formats. They really were the backbone of Disney's golden age.

I like most of what you said. As for sleeping beauty, she really didnt get a choice . But i feel snow white gets a bad rep even more so then Cinderella. Snow white s main job was to uplift peoples spirits during a horrible war and it worked. People wanted to see someone who wouldn't get depressed and could find ways to be helpful to those around them, no matter how bad the situation got. For that i respect Snow. But i will admit i dislike her singing and have a hard time watching it.
@rjenyawd
@rjenyawd 2 года назад
@@Cantmakeupmymindonaname Disney gets a pass on Snow White hiccups, because it's literally the first animated movie that was ever made. (Not just first Disney movie. It literally was the first full-length cartoon movie EVER.) But yeah. I only singled out Snow White and Aurora, because ********************** *****SPOILERS****** ********************** ....they are the only ones who technically don't actively try to save themselves. Not that either of them actually got the choice. Both were tricked and caught completely unaware, and HAD to be saved by someone else...so their plots don't really do them many favors. On the other hand, I'd very much argue that the lead characters in Sleeping Beauty are Flora, Fauna, and Meriwether (the three fairies). Which, on brand, are still three strong female leading characters who end up being the heroes of the story and "saving the princess."

acording to film theory ( who counted them) , the huns in the scene there were 11 on the mountian, 178 horsemen, and 1,078 foot soldiers. Only six of those Huns made it out of the mountians alive. Mulan is a badass, and my favorite disney princess. She's also the only disney princess who isn't offically royalty at the end of her story (even moana and pocahontas were daughters of the chief). I remember this movie as a young boy and thought, "so girls can be awesome too." The cultural ideas about gender didn't hit me until years later, but I bet they found traction with some groups right away(but honor and dishonor was still most important). It's almost a period piece. Men are soldiers and/or workers and women are wives and/or homemakers. It was the _only_ idea for _many_ years across the world. Especially ancient Asia(if my education is correct). It wasn't until 1995 after all, that China declared gender equality as policy(but women are often seen as second class to this day).
