Sidney Poitier presenting producers Mel Gibson, Alan Ladd, Jr. and Bruce Davey with the Oscar® for Best Picture for "Braveheart" at the 68th Academy Awards® in 1996. Introduced by Whoopi Goldberg.
Braveheart is more then a Oscar movie. It is an Epic masterpiece in memory of a nineteen generation. Everybody knews. It is a piece of the Hollywood movie History.
RIP Sidney Poitier (February 20, 1927 - January 6, 2022), aged 94 And RIP Alan Ladd Jr. (October 22, 1937 - March 2, 2022), aged 84 You both will be remembered as legends.
It deserved best director, best picture and best actor. But they'll never give 3 oscars to one man in one night. Those fight scenes were by far some of the best directed scenes in history of cinema.
@@stonecold5373 I'm not talking about the year (I write clearly in 2003), I'm talking about the Academy giving 3 Oscars to Peter Jackson (also, Titanic wasn't neither in 1996 and I don't see you correcting that comment).
This is the best and most inspiring movie I have ever watched. I dont care what people say about Mel Gibson he is still one of the greatest actors to ever make films.
He is not underrated. His personal life damaged his reputation for a while. That’s all. Fun fact: Mel helped Robert Downey Jr when RDJ was in his darkest period of life. And RDJ helped Mel many years later.
Sometimes when something is so perfect we take it for granted. Thinking well that is the way. Everything is supppose to be! The acting in Braveheart was so great with so many! The movie changed my life. Help me get in touch with my roots. A true masterpiece! Never forget the great composer. James Horner! R.I.P.
@@TheBardeng Robert Downey Jr. In a way is another Braveheart. His crusade mission is helping troubled children. Look in his eyes you will see the fighting spirit! I did on set of a movie! A true modern warrior!
I'm proud of Braveheart which captures the spirit of William Wallace and the plight of the Scottish condition that is looking for an destinct identitiy and an expression of freedom and enlightenment.
This film captures nothing but how fkn wrong all the facts are. Why choose to make a film about real life events Then completely ruin it by changing fact into pure fiction. Why not just make a fiction film to begin with. 🙈 doh!
Braveheart being historically inaccurate doesn’t devalue it as a cinematic triumph. The movie’s a historical fantasy and not meant to depict facts; Mel Gibson and Randall Wallace have made that perfectly clear. Just sit back and enjoy the story, characters, soundtrack and cinematography. 😉
@Boel B it's not the only movie to win 11 oscars and that isn't an indication of quality necessarily also it's only 7th highest rated on Imdb that doesn't make it the 7th most beloved movie ever, there's other popularity polls it never shows up on and popularity is not necessarily an indication of quality either.
@Boel B Sorry, you misunderstand I wasn't going after the great lotr's I was going after lotr's, hope that clears that up and why is me pointing out other popularity polls not legitimate after you pointed one out yourself?, if people love it so much why is there polls of best movies it never shows up on for me to reference in the first place?
"Braveheart" was such a great epic! Mel Gibson had done such a fantastic job both in front of and behind the camera! It deserved to win Best Picture that year.
So nice to see Alan Ladd Jr. get a well deserved Oscar to highlight his amazing career in film producing/leading studios. He's the man that tapped George Lucas to make Star Wars...he tapped Ridley Scott to make Alien and he told Mel it made sense for him to not only act in this movie (a given) but to direct it (not a given by any means). The man is responsible for basically greenlighting some of the best films in cinema history.
I think we can agree that 1995 was a great year for movies: Babe, Heat, Before Sunrise, Toy Story, A litlle Princess, La Haine, Braveheart, Dead Man Walking, Richard III, The Bridges of Madison County, Seven, Apollo 13. That's one hell of a year
Still remember it like yesterday, first time seeing this movie in Ankara, capital of Turkey. I saw it for the first time and it has changed my life forever, i mean ever. Everything about the movie was just outstanding, the story, acting, script, scenery, music i mean everythin. I ended up going this movie in the same cinema more than 124 times over 3 years period. Thats right the move was shown in Ankara Bati Cinemas for no less than 132 weeks. 124 times went to see this movie in the cinema and never felt regret about it. Greatest ever
A well deserved standing ovation for a trailblazer and ice breaker indeed, Mr. Sidney Poitier. Rest in Peace and Rest in Power dear brother.❤❤❤❤💯🏆👍💪🙏✝️
3:39 Mel please hahahhahahaa You Directed it and starred in it, plus also produced it. I would say the spotlight only belongs to you. Braveheart is your baby dude. A true masterpiece of film making all time.
By this time he'd already received the Oscar for directing it, and given his speech. So he wanted to give the other producers a chance to speak as well cause he already had his.
Braveheart is a masterpiece, perfectly directed and acted everybody did fantastic and it was executed without flaw, every time I hear the bagpipes playing the theme I get goosebumps it is my favorite movie and the best movie I've ever seen
"Braveheart" is a fantastic film, and I believe Mel Gibson deserves the Oscar for best actor, his role as William Wallace was great, but it was not even nominated
2:49 - 2:57 Sidney Poitier: And the Oscar for Best Picture is presented to... (*opens the envelope*) ...Braveheart. Me: "FREEDOM!!!!!'" Braveheart will always be my #1 favorite movie (and #1 favorite Mel Gibson movie) of all-time. It's an epic masterpiece. Enough said.
The Academy was making up for lost time with Al Pacino. They didn't award him for any of his previous roles, so the Oscar for scent of a woman was basically an apology for not awarding him earlier in his career.
Fun Fact: This is the only time when Braveheart is honored with "Best Picture of the Year". No other Critic or Award Ceremony awarded it their top prize.
@@GroundhogDayisAWESOME Apocalypto is equal to Braveheart but more "rock" and not mainstream just like the Passion of the Christ...too edgy for the Academy but both cult "Gibsonian" masterpieces with out a doubt
It's just a Heartfelt and Beautiful moment to hear the movie's name and then the music plays. Truly one of the best movies of all time. Very Deserving!!!!
yes! but se7en was too gruesome for the academy those days. the usual suspects i have no idea why wasnt considered. kayser soze is a legend to this day
I honestly miss the times when movies like this could win the Best Picture Oscar. I miss the times when the main argument against most winners was ''that movie is too artsy'' and not ''that movie only won because of politics''. I miss the Oscars being about filmmaking.
"BRAVEHEART "- "ONE OF THE 'BEST' MOVIES EVER, IT HAS 'EVERYTHING '-ACTION, ROMANCE, LOVE, EXCITEMENT & OF 'COURSE, EVERY 'EMOTION ' - "FREEEEEDOM"-!!!..💯💯💯👍👍👍😘😍🥰❤❤❤🌹🌹🌹💋💋💋
The best history shown on screen the best movie ever made. And Mel Gibson pulled a amazing Scottish accent. Watching that movie makes me proud to be Scottish
My nominees: - Braveheart - Dead Man Walking - Se7en - Toy Story - The Usual Suspects Winner: Braveheart Honorable Mentions - Leaving Las Vegas - Dead Man - Casino - Heat - Babe - Apollo 13 - 12 Monkeys
Amazing film, but I find it pretty criminal that Toy Story wasn’t even nominated. In the end though, I’m glad Braveheart won, easily one of the best films to win Best Picture.
Braveheart i the movie that i watch and watch and i still get angry, sad, upbeat and cry like a child but not in that order. Thank you Mr Gibson and all who made the best movie ever. 👏👏👏👏❤
I love how humble Alan Ladd, Jr. was (all of them actually ) he was the true driving Force behind Braveheart and other emblematic movies like Star Wars&Blade Runner...He was the one who insisted that Mel should also star as William Wallace instead of a younger actor like Brad Pitt or Jason Patrick who were the main contenders for the part ...
Completely agree. It's not like it's supposed to be Schindler's List. It's not about the Holocaust or tragedy. It's about the oppressed country of Scotland rising up and defeating England. It's an action/adventure film with great romance and drama. It is okay for it to take it's own liberties.
The thing about Braveheart is that its like all the actors were specifically born to play their roles in this masterpiece, they were all amazing, perhaps the two greatist movies ever made is Braveheart and Amadeus, the true yardstick of great movies is,do you want to whatch it again and again and you allways which it was the first time
And I 100% agree with Mr. Ebert - Rest in peace. No doubt it was the movie that should've gotten Ron Howard his Oscar, and not "A Beautiful Mind" even though that movie was pretty good as well. At least he still got an Oscar, but "Apollo 13" is considered his greatest film, a very strong and powerful story.
That movie was a great film in a great year; totally deserved it. I wished the Academy had that expanded Best Picture system back than, I would’ve loved to see The Usual Suspects, Dead Man Walking, Leaving Las Vegas, and Toy Story nominated.
After seeing Braveheart when it was released in Glasgow, Scotland, it inspired me to seek out books from the local library (pre-internet) and read up on my Scottish history. I learned so much. We were never really taught our Scottish history in school, save for a spider and an obscure Scottish king (Bruce) and scant few other morsels from our past. Why weren't we taught any Scottish history in school? for fear of what's taking place today in Scotland today - an awakening. London were afraid of the consequences of Scots learning about their history, their culture, their land, their heroes. Supressing and distorting information - what they do - meant they could cow us, rule us, disrespect us and rob us. The burgeoning of information from the internet has caused a stirring in Scotland, a desire to want what every nation on the planet desires; simply to govern itself. Let's start by Googling 'The Scottish Enlightenment' and quoting Voltaire: "It is to Scotland that we must look for our idea of civilisation." What happened to that Scotland? Nothing happened to it, except it was hidden, intentionally, expertly by the avaristic and bellligerent Westminster crew. No more. We have no quarrel with our English neighbours, a popular myth put-about by those threatened by the inevitability of Scottish independence, instead, we welcome everyone, every nationality, every race and every religion. Is it so wrong to want self-determination? Of course not, it's the most natural thing in the world. Welcome, everyone, to our wonderful country.
At 2:11, when "Babe" is mentioned as one of the nominees, you can see George Miller (the film's producer) in the audience, and director Chris Noonan seated in front of him. How telling that they were not seated side-by-side. They had a bitter falling-out during the production, and Noonan accused Miller of trying to take all credit for the movie's success. That's why Miller directed the sequel himself instead of Noonan.
One of my favorite Best Picture winners, alongside Forrest Gump, The Artist, The Sound of Music, Titanic, Ben-Hur, The Godfather and Casablanca. If I have to list which is my most favorite or #1, I would say Braveheart!
That was a great film. It deserved to clean up the Oscars in everything. Cinematography, musical score, best actor, best set and costume design, EVERYTHING! .......HOLLYWOOD SOMETIMES BLOWS MY MIND IN HOW MUCH THEY OVERLOOK. And while I am at it I'll say this ..Mel Gibson has been one of the most underrated actors and directors Hollywood has ever had. The guy is a bloody genius, so so talented. Maybe Mel would have got the recognition he deserved if had been buddies with Martin Scorsese. I won't say any more than that.
No matter what sins Mel Gibson may have committed, he deserved this moment! Very gracious of him not to hog the 45 seconds! Alan Ladd Jr. Is the son of a great actor from my Dad's era.
Braveheart is amazing. But what I can't understand even to this day is the fact that HEAT by Michael Mann and CASINO by Scorsese weren't nominated, I mean two Masterpieces of the 90's!
I saw a documentary of 13 and watched the movie, and even some of the people who were there said 'these actors nailed it'! Whilst historians dismissed the movie Braveheart and called it a "Hollywood perversion of actual event". The characters were not in their true form. Wallace in the movie was inaccurate along with other characters in the movie as well.
I really enjoy and love the epic film Braveheart! "One of the best film by the great Mel Gibson", and I put the film with Gladiator, and Seven Samurai.
To consider that lineup of finalists, Babe and Apollo 13 probably could have won in many, if not most, other years. It's just they went up against a Juggernaut in Braveheart in 1995
