The most impressive thing about Steinitz is that he was the oldest player to ever win a World Chess Championship at the age of 58. He was also the second oldest at 55, third-oldest at 53, fourth-oldest at 50 but he has to tie that with Botvinnik who was 50 himself.

It's brilliant how you study the history of these matches. That's a great story about Steinitz. Btw, "betimes" is archaic, it just means early. The word appears often in the King James version of the Bible & has a bit of a literary feel to it. It's just a little more exact than early, with a slight extra connotation of eagerly, perhaps. Love your videos, I'm catching up on them, only recently having come across your channel.

A great game to revisit time and time again. Of course, the legend of "Von Bardeleben storming out" is one of those classics of chess literature. Great that you took the time to explore it, and the article of Winter (probably the most respected authority in chess history nowadays) is very interesting to put things in full context. Regarding the game itself, it's another of those sad stories in chess in the catalog of "One side didn't castle". Poor Von Bardeleben probably thought that he could hold the position by trading everything and keeping the King on f7. But, it turned out that White's development was overwhelming once the rooks got into the game. A true classic game, and thanks for reuploading it: it is indeed the bravest rook in history.
@PaulDeCamp
@PaulDeCamp 4 года назад
Had he castled then Steinitz could have time to make an escape square for his king. And both sides go on. It's a whole different game. Might interesting, might not.
@elasiduo108
@elasiduo108 4 года назад
@@PaulDeCamp Indeed. It was the XIX Century, and the chess principles weren't completely discovered in those days. Von Banderleben was a decent chess player, but he botched the opening. Steinitz, one of the main founders of Modern Chess Theory, grasped the chance and took him to town.
@veloxeam7303

I had ideas at the pause for rook to c5 knight to e5 pawn takes e5 rook takes pawn on e5 triple and you have a rook queen and rook on the e file with check on the king. Is there anything that can refute this? The knight is pinned so its seems just winning for white. If black plays pawn to b6 when white goes rook to c5 you just go knight to e5 threatening the queen
@wot_hog
@wot_hog 3 года назад
Agad, "betimes" is archaic English and means before the usual or expected time, or early. So she woke up earlier than usual that morning. And in case you were also wondering what was meant by "I was waiting with a buttonhole, which I pinned on his coat", a buttonhole is a boutonniere, or small flower or bouquet worn by a man in the buttonhole of the lapel of his dinner jacket or coat.

I know where Steinitz is coming from. In some tournaments that I played, there was an old guy who would keep making slurping sounds constantly throughout the game and was really annoying. When I met him once, I even played a move and resigned because it was so bad. (and because I was out of the money by then as well).

So Steinitz outplayed Carl. But Carl outplayed the audience? Teamwork indeed from back in the days when chivalry was not dead! Great stuff as always!

By far my favorite review from Agad! Absolutely beautiful 🔥🙌 not only the analysis of alternate lines but the history behind this masterpiece and also providing the supplemental material to back up the validity of his narrative 👏 what a wonderful time to live in 🎉🤯

I could totally picture Morphy getting irritated by the applause and reversing the move order to give away a game to his opponent had that happened.
