The fact he has the same voice actor is both games is genuinely shocking. I still wish he sounded the same in ultimate as he did in brawl. I think all the spacies had their best voice in brawl tbh
Yeah it's also weird considering that Fox and Falco never share the same voice actor throughout the series. Pretty sure it is always a new voice actor for each game (not entirely sure tho)
@@Spenkr Fox is actually voiced by the same person in SSB4 & Ultimate, and same thing applies with Falco. Again, quite crazy considering how different SSB4 Fox and Ultimate Fox sounds. In early Smash games, Fox's Japanese VA from Star Fox 64 voices him in all versions of both 64 and Melee (outside of the secret taunts in Corneria/Venom).
To be fair Luigi's final smash has some fun origins It's a reference to the "negative worlds" from super mario bros, a glitched couple of levels accessible through screwing with the console, where things were super out of place, random tiles, effects, and sprites would parade depending on the severity of the glitches, wrong enemies would appear in the dumbest places, you could swim in mid-air etc. These secret levels would be referenced later on, like in Super Mario Bros 2 (JP) with its secret 9th world, Super Mario World with the star road levels, and Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door where they straight up go to the "-1 world" So having Luigi send you to this "negative zone" where you're inflicted with random debuffs while you're helpless in a screwy color palette nightmare land is a cool nod to one of the more forgotten parts of early mario legends
I think you confused TTYD with Super Paper Mario. Pretty sure the Minus World isn't a thing in TTYD, but it's been a while since I've played it so maybe I'm wrong.
Despite the janky and reused attack animations from other fighters, I am still impressed that they managed to make him last minute with mostly unique moves in comparison to Fox and Falco. Even his special moves (minus down special) derives away from Fox's version far more than Falco's versions do. I am similarly impressed with Toon Link for similar reasons.
I’m so happy that someone out there noticed how badly nerfed Wolf’s taunts are compared to Brawl. People loved spamming taunts with Kirby Falco Peach Sonic but for us, the select few, Wolf was a fantastic character to spam taunts with 🥲 Great video!
@@Spenkrit seems Nintendo doesn't know what a taunt is. How is "Hands off my prey!" a phrase to well, friggin taunt your opponent? The only reason people like the taunt is because its IASA frames line up with interrupting the word "prey" with Falco's d-smash sound. Try it yourself, RU-vid might ban me if I tell you.

Actually that part about Wolf having different attributes based on what mode you're playing doesn't just apply to Wolf. Apparently many of the fighters have different attributes in Subspace as opposed to Versus. I feel like that it's most noticeable with Cpt. Falcons run speed in Subspace, but then again I haven't played Subspace in a long time.
@@mauricesteel4995 Player 2 isn't automatically faster. The Subspace stat differences apply when you're in Exploration Mode: the side-scrolling sections. Player 2's movement speed is actually based on how close he is to the blast zone at that instance. If he's right next to P1, he has the same movement speed, but at the edge of the screen, he be zoomin'.
I think falco just sounded bizarre. He sounded way too low pitched. Like when he says “FIRE” i was like “That ain’t Falco” Ok that wasn’t even intentional
3:02 actually, EVERY character has altered attributes in Subspace, not just Wolf. Generally speaking, characters have slower run speeds, faster falling speeds, and better double jumps. But there’s also some character-specific stuff, like Pokémon Trainer’s stamina mechanic being removed, and command grabs like Egg Lay or Inhale not actually grabbing enemies.

One criticism of your editing people would notice right away is the sound mixing. Your voice is almost lost amongst the sound effects and character voices. Great video, hope to see more.
Honestly I prefer Wolf in Brawl over Ultimate, though both are great. In Brawl it felt like he wanted to straight up kill you (and he had cooler animations imo)
ALL characters actually have different stats for Subspace Emissary... Probably to make sure that all characters can handle the platforming sections, and alternatively to prevent faster characters like Sonic from being _too_ fast and skipping most of the levels.
While I don’t main Wolf, he’s still a good character to play as. I remember hearing back during the days of Brawl, that even though Wolf had moves borrowed from other fighters due to him being a late addition, people generally believed that he shared the same exact move set as Fox. Like, basically an Echo fighter before it was established. I had a hard time believing those people, and I was only an 8 year old boy when Brawl was new. Saying that Wolf shared the same move set as Fox is kind of like saying Bowser’s move set is an exact copy of Mario’s. And we all know that that’s not true. Then there were others who I remember said how Wolf was a “ripoff clone”. I don’t think they knew what they were saying back then. A ripoff clone? Then that means he wasn’t a clone at ALL. I was relieved all that ended when Wolf returned in Ultimate. Probably because he isn’t classified as an Echo fighter. Good video, by the way. I liked how you went in-depth with the character. 👍
One thing I noticed that wasn't mentioned was that Wolf has wait 60 frames to meteor cancel as opposed to the standard 30 frames every non tether recovery character has. It's such a bizarre thing. It feels like a mistake yet at the same time intentional since twice the norm and 4x higher than those with tether recovery.
I actually liked alot of wolfs unfinished weirdness from Brawl. It kinda gave him his own unique feel. While I still like him in Ultimate. He just doesn't feel as unique as he once did, feeling alot closer to fox for me
Project M did a really good job with Wolf, I personally think that the PM version of wolf is my favorite, A youtuber named Honest content made a video on wolf and I recommend checking it out!
Wolf is so oddly niche/obscure as a Smash character and I kind of love him in both Brawl and Ultimate. Honestly it was so sad for me that he wasn’t in Smash 4, but I was so happy to see that massive glow up in Ultimate.
Fun Fact: Wolf may also have been rushed in Ultimate Looking at his texture files, a few of them are very low resolution as well as some being squashed together into the same file. Furthermore there are a lot of typos within his mesh names for expressions and if you look at his in game render you can see the wire in his left arm clipping through his hand armour
Thanks for making this video, I hate how cheap Wolf feels and looks in brawl, and I love how he does in ultimate. I found this video because people always Zetterburn from Rivals of Aether (the broken fire lion) is Fox, and yes, he's inspired by Melee fox, but like 70% of his moveset is brawl wolf better animated.
Potentially hot take, but I think Brawl Wolf is so much sicker than he is in Ultimate. His design is sicker, his voice acting is incredible, and that idle stance is just iconic.
Overall, good video and editing! However, the first part does feel just a little like a summary of Wolf’s Brawl wiki page and without fully understanding some of it. Every Brawl character has a different set of parameters in subspace to make the platforming segments less variable across the roster. This means that every character has a different fall and fast fall speed in that mode, and the fast fall should be faster, but just wasn’t adjusted for Wolf. Wolf’s moves borrowing animations from other characters I believe is just a rumour, as I’ve also seen claims that his down air is taken from Ike, not Diddy Kong, and I’ve yet to see dataminers confirm these suspicions. Still, thanks for the watch
Excellent video. As a Smash and Star Fox fan, I've studied Wolf's rushed development quite extensively. Even wrote an old Star Fox article for SourceGaming if you're familiar with them. You did a great job hitting all the main points. Video itself was edited well, you have potential. Keep it up.
You don’t know why randomly tripping out of nowhere just by walking or running is a big deal? Especially in a competitive environment?? Even playing the game casually, tripping was the most annoying and dumbest thing ever.
I don’t think the leftover and working eye is a mistake per say. It’s probably more like a leftover function from the character base they were using and chose not to remove it and risk breaking anything.
@@Spenkr though, that’s just my hunch. I just came to that assumption because a lot of things get leftover and unseen for development times sake. Great video btw! Very engaging and it was pretty dang solid learning about how weird wolf was. That intro is very good :]
Great video! The editing is incredible, but as people might have pointed out it's a bit hard to hear you (esp as a non-native speaker). Compressing and making sure the voiceover is more even in volume goes a long way, and since you're so good at using visuals you could tone down sfx with a "show-don't-tell" approach. Subbing anyway of course, cheers :)
If only the StarFox franchise was given the same care as the IP gets from SSB. (Because much like F-Zero, fans of the respective series haven't gotten $#!+ in over a decade. And sorry, but a Wii U game that was made at the end of the system's life cycle and dead on arrival, along with a throwaway "99" title don't really count) Wolf O'Donnell is a fun character. I'm glad he made it in Brawl and returned in ultimate, too. Hopefully, we can see the StarFox franchise rise from the grave eventually.
This video made me want to main Wolf but Ultimate wolf looks so lame compared to Brawl wolf. He used to look so feral and aggressive when standing but now he just stands there regularly. Also his new clothes make him look like a gay cowboy. Also he has a lamer voice. Hopefully next Smash game we get that Raw vibe back.

I kind of agree, I initially thought about using Game and Watches animations, but his remain choppy throughout the series. But for Wario his get cleaned up in Smash 4 and Ultimate, so I thought it made a little more sense as an example.
