I am 73 years old and had the honor of listening to the music of David gates and bread in my younger years. I am currently doing some surgery for my hearing loss If things work out I can again listen to the great music of my time. May God bless the group bread. .
@@maryholliday5639 My favorite too but as a native Memphian, I'm biased. As you may know Memphis was his adopted hometown. (At the time of his death, Franklin, TN an upscale bedroom in the Nashville metro.) I saw Bread, one of my most favorite bands, on this tour when they played the Mid-South Coliseum, May 15, 1977. Excellent show; the Coliseum was well known for its great sightlines and acoustics.
Jimmy Griffin underrated as a songwriter. "Look What You've Done" is a terrific song. His songs leaned a little more to the rock side but Gates scored over and over again with the hit singles.
@@samstevens7172 I'm reading a biography about them now called "Bread: A Sweet Surrender". It sounds like it was a little of both. The label pushed Gates because the first hit was one of his songs; so they were hesitant to change the formula. But on the other hand, when they put out songs outside of the Gates formula, the public didn't respond as enthusiastically. Caused a lot of friction later. Definitely a good read if you are interested in what was going on behind the scenes. There was definitely a lot of drama around the time of this show...
Bread formed in the summer of 1968 and released their eponymous debut album in 1969. It was an eclectic mix of ballads and more uptempo material. A fine album, although the singles Dismal Day and Could I failed to make an impression on the charts. Luckily for Bread, their next album, On The Waters from 1970 became their breakthrough album, thanks in no small part to the No.1 hit Make It With You. Manna, from 1971 made sure Bread was on a successful roll, as the single If become a Top 5 hit and the album itself went Gold. 4. album Baby I'm A Want You saw the leaving of Robb Royer and the coming of Larry Knechtel and together they cracked out probably their best ever album. 3 hit singles, among them the superb Everything I Own, would assume Bread would virtually go on forever but the next album Guitar Man(1972) would prove difficult to record as main members David Gates and guitarist James Griffin would occasionally not see eye to eye. A sixth album was set to record but was aborted early on and Gates would officially leave Bread in early 1973. Both Gates and Griffin would record solo albums in the mid 70s but none were as successful as Bread in their glory days. In 1976, Bread were reunited and would record their 6th and final, the rather fine Lost Without Your Love. The title track would crack the Top 10 but diversions again began to rise between Gates and Griffin and Griffin would leave the band during their 1977/78 tour. Fans were delighted as Gates and Griffin sat their problems aside for a Bread reunion tour almost 20 years later in 1996/1997. All in all, a superb band. Poprock at its finest and their songs are indeed timeless in their appeal.
I did not reach the bread at my age" but i love the bread" i have so many collection. Even that i was born on heavy metal band age. But i love bread" so relaxing.
@@stormsfromcalifornia4379 Not true! I wish people would do a little research before saying things like this. Robb Royer - who is an original and founding member of the band and was on the first three albums - is still very much alive and well.
Their songs cannot erased in our heads... Reminded me of my childhood until teenage days.. having a girlfriend when I was in highschool using their songs played on my guitar
#EduSeijas Just two words for you: "THANK YOU"! I was able to see them on this tour in 1977 and am so pleased that someone captured it on video! I can deal with the lower resolution thank you!!!
Mike Botts was also a GREAT singer. I was totally amazed when I heard him sing on the BBC Bread special (it's on RU-vid). I wished Gates and Griffin had worked him into some songs.
I love Bread always and forever, you can tell David Gates is a very gifted musician and a great man, the most decent celebrity I’ve seen, unaffected by fame.
Larry Knechtel of the Wrecking Crew on bass.....better known as a keyboard player but equally adept on bass--played on hundreds if not thousands of records.....including the organ on "Good Vibrations" and the piano on "Bridge Over Troubled Water." R. I. P., Larry......
He also played the original lead guitar on Bread's "Guitarman". He let Dean play it after he joined the group in 76. Larry's a multi-talented musician, as is James, David and Dean. I think Larry used a little more wah wah on the song than Dean does. They both do a great job.
@@georgebur Yea they were definitely one of the best groups to come out of the 70s. All of them were talented individuals. I bought about everything they came out with, including their Bread Complete songbook in the 70s. Thats how I learned Larry did the original guitar solo on "Guitarman" and learned that James and Robb wrote "For All We Know". I still have it though its in used condition cause I used it a lot over the years. lol
Bread were "uncool" when I was knocking about in the 70s. The girls had the albums but the boys use to slag them off. I pretended my Bread album was my Mums. Things you do'. 🙂
Thank you Eduardo Seijas for posting this. For years been after Bread "in concert" videos and recordings. They were a great band. "Been to Long on the Road" and "Look what you ve done" , two of my.favorite songs.
Thanks for posting... considering there are so very few "performances" of the entire band vs. solo David Gates, it's great to have regardless of quality. That means I can judge for myself its worth...
JAMES Griffin great underrated Singer and performer starting with fancy Dancer. DAVID GATES OF COURSE ONE OF GREATEST SOFT BALLAD POP SINGERS OF ALL TIME. MY TOP FAVORITE ARE PETER BECKETT, PAUL MACARTNEY, DABID GATES , GEORGE MICHAEL , ANDY GIBB.
Excellent! It's really wonderful and after watching them immediately we start to think: Nowadays there are not groups with so quality and the same performance. I miss them.
Nothing like them. They were just fantastic with such beautiful music. I had just arrived here in the U.S. a year before and did not get a chance to see them in concert. I am truly sorry for missing out on them.
What's amazing about Bread is that although David Gates would write the bands singles in his balladry motion, Jimmy Griffin could write equally effective ballads himself and you'll find quite a few of them scattered across Breads albums. Likewise, Griffin would write the more rockin bluesy material but Gates would ALSO provide excellent uptempo songs on their albums! I love Bread. They're probably my all time favourite band. I'm a big fan of 60s poprock music but the 1970s with all the great Softrock bands, including Bread, America and Eagles man, they're just unbeatable!!!
Unfortunately, if not tragically, James Griffin never got the respect or admiration or credit that he was so rightfully deserving of. Without James, Bread would not have been the same band. While David brought heart into the band, James brought and gave soul to the band.
Hard to believe, I was a teenager when most of Bread’s records were new and I remember the school and Church stomps and dancing to Bread. Now I’m reaching my sunset years and this is like going back in a time machine and it’s now so long ago. David is the only one alive and he is in his 80’s We are all going to be ancient history before long. What a trip!
@@batphink2655 I hate to predict the end times , that’s been done too many times by others. It’s certain that my generation is passing away. Gotta say though that things look to be building to a major change, hope it’s for the better……
I wish I was there, I'm only 5 in '76. When they came here in Philippines I missed the bread concert but I didn't missed David Gates concert. So its ok.. but there was no drums set..
Find the clip of Linda Ronstadt recording the great Smokey Robinson song "The Tracks Of My Tears." As hard as it is to take one's eyes off Linda, there is a moment where the camera pans to show the other guys in the studio and there's Mike Botts on drums!
18:45 That girl has SERIOUS issues. I mean, I guess she might just be shy, but she came off as VERY rude. Pushing her friend into the concert hall to get away from the cameras!
UPDATE: A rare live performance of the song Hooked On You has been discovered! It seems like we’re getting close to finally leaking the full documentary in better picture quality.
Bread released 6 studio albums between 1969 and 1977. Here's my ranking list going from the best to the worst, although Bread never released a bad album: 1. Baby I'm A Want You 2. Manna 3. On The Waters 4. Bread 5. Lost Without Your Love 6. Guitar Man
Good call. I'm a musician and also an Eagles fan. Never noticed this - it's one of those things where they could have sued and possible made some money...
Mike Botts was such a good drummer and Larry Knechtel's superb bass playing. Throw in the mastery of David Gates and James Griffin's voice. Bread were the complete package. Not forgetting top LA session guitarist Dean Parks.
I was introduced to bread by my ex girl friend from Bury in 1973 she purchased the Baby I'm a want album for my first birthday and ever since I purchased their music. Sadly we parted but bread became one of my favourite bands of all time. Fantastic song writers.
@@MoonlightNothing yes...I had no idea drummer Mike Botts played on so much other stuff thru yrs on so many West Coast artists stuff.. Linda Rondstadt KarlaBonoff Warren Zevon Dan Fogelberg Olivia NJohn
@@pmsfar-outgrooviness8025that's good to know he left so early though he was only there for a couple of years.. when the real hit started flowing through everybody seem to remember Larry Kentchel...
It's a real shame more of this wasn't on film versus videotape. Restoration has gotten pretty godd, but it still can't be fully restored to vibrant colors like film can. Bread were simply amazing. Gates, Griffin and the guys were true talents. Someone needs to do a bio film! Maybe David could be coaxed out to do interviews. RIP Jimmy, Mike and Larry

I absolutely loved Bread, especially hot buttered rolls
I thought Griffin joined them for the 1996 (25 year tour) - - I am 99% certain that he and Gates "buried the proverbial hatchet" and toured one last time as Bread.
