Quick Q; why would I want my butt ball-side? That doesn’t make a ton of sense to me. Like, isn’t it backside defense’s problem to worry about the off-ball side? Shouldn’t the hot-slide guy be most worried about the slide and his own man? I just don’t really see any good reason to be facing off-ball because it’s going to make your slide a lot slower because you’ll have to take a big drop step instead of just breaking out to slide. Or is the scenario that it’s a pass to a cutter going to that cone that causes you to slide? I’ve always been taught to keep my eye on the ball, my stick on my man, and be able to keep an eye shaded towards the cage. We call it setting up with pistols, one towards my man, one towards the ball. If your butt is ball-side, you effectively remove any chance of you being able to knock down a skip pass or even a pass to your man because you have no idea it’s coming.

He basically does what you describe at the end, with the purpose of being able to see the ball and the crease man at the same time. I actually think the drill makes more sense with him as the two slide, helping down on the crease. Then as the ball swings, he has to get out and breakdown, and as it swings again he needs to recover to the crease with stick up. I think it’s just an issue of bad wording, but what he demonstrates in the video is what you described.
