I love seeing current bjj guys with backgrounds in judo or wrestling. So much better than double guard pulls, which is just depressing.

I’m brown in judo blue in bjj, and tbh wish I could learn wrestling but as an adult there aren’t many options. Judo has been tremendous for me both in gi and no gi in competition. What’s funny is I’m a killer on the ground in judo and standing in bjj not because I’m special, but because each makes up for what the other lacks. Awesome video.

When did you start in judo? I'm 22 and want to learn a grappling form (currently learning boxing) and I'm torn between judo and wrestling. The only close mma gym teaches bjj and wrestling, but I know that wrestling is much harder to learn as an adult working full-time and doing it as a hobby vs learning in high school and being able to devote a lot more time and energy to it.

That was really dope, I might be wrong but it seemed like the judo guy wanted to do more bjj than judo and wasn't too active on the standup. The wrestler seemed like he wanted to use his standup for the finish on the ground, but the judo guy seemed more experienced on the ground so he was moreso relying on that (or maybe to conserve energy or he was just getting put down, just seemed like he wasn't trying his hardest standing and it looked like he could do more than he was letting on) but then again it is a bjj gym so maybe he was just trying to be on the ground to sharpen that skill. Could be wrong but either way waht a fantastic video!

He tapped him every time it went to the ground, how is that not an answer to the takedown, what if that was his plan all along. In a bjj and judo match it goes much further than standing and being put on your back for a split second, that’s why the judo/bjj guy kept winning against the wrestler

Good match up and I thought it shows the fundamentals of each discipline. The wrestler is looking for position and control on the ground whereas the Judo player is looking for subs. As for the leg grabs, these were banned from Judo about 15 years ago so the modern Judo player isn't used to defending against them (which is very easy really if you're used to them). So yeah, really interesting match.

With all due respect, having a black belt in judo can but, at the same time, doesn’t necessarily speak completely about one’s judo level in comparison to say BJJ’s belt system, which is very rigorous and explicitly represents one’s skill level majority of the time. I wish you guys could’ve invited someone that actually could similarly match the labels such as “National level”, “top 10 in the ladder”, etc.

A national level anything is a bit fair against any old BB though. In BJJ and especially in judo, where ranks can mean different things at different places, you know there are black belts, and there are black belts. Like comparing your average BJJ black belt to a Pan Am or ADCC competitor. Differences are more pronounced in judo, where a black belt in many places overseas just means you have the basics down and are ready to start competing, so basically the real start in your journey.

I’m looking to improve my takedown competency. Although in our bjj gym we drill takedown techniques I don’t feel enough emphasis is put on learning how to execute them effectively, learning timing etc and we don’t drill when resisting, so when it comes to stand up sparring (which isn’t done frequently as many like to start sitting down), nothing really works well. Also because no one’s stand up game is particularly good, it’s more liable to end in injury with spazzyness. If it’s a choice between beginning attending either wrestling or judo classes for a couple hours a week with a view to gaining confidence in my takedown game and being better prepared for competition, which would you recommend as being the best most practical option? Alternatively if neither what would you recommend? 👍 Btw I’m still just a 4 stripe white belt with two years of training

I hear you dude. BJJ has always been my first love, have done it on and off since 13, still do it now. However I started training and competing seriously in wrestling from 19, and I’ve never looked back. Nothing can replace wrestling with wrestlers to learn takedowns and, more importantly, takedown defence. I’ve met many BJJ guys who crush me at pure BJJ, but I’ve wrecked them on wrestling. From a “fighting” POV takedowns count. I’d say embrace wrestling… for your BJJ.
