In this video, I go over 3 different product categories and 3 different price tiers to determine the value of each of the products to help you understand whether you should spend more money on more expensive products. Sometimes it's worth it to spend more money and buy the high end version because you understand the value of that item - sometimes it's not worth it. You really just have to look at what you want and take the time to understand the features of the different offerings and make an informed decision that's right for you!

This was a tough one to do but I really wanted to help you understand the value of moving up the price tiers - sometimes it's worth it to you, sometimes it isn't. However it all comes down to what you and your family really value. Also, since Wayfair changes their product names and descriptions every 5 minutes, it looks like they've specified now that it is top grain genuine leather. I still stand by what I said in the video, but it's great to see more transparency!

It was really interesting! 👌🏼Congratulations! High end furnitures are expensive but they are wise investments. Ikea furnitures are made in China and on the last piece i bought, the screws weren't aligned with the holes... Took me 3 hours instead of 10 minutes! Time is money! 😒

Good clarification, for more on Top grain vs. Full grain "Top grain crusts come from South America and are generally not as clean as European full grain crusts. They often feature scars, bug bites and brand marks. In order to prepare these hides for upholstery purposes, the top grain is removed below any imperfections. This process also removes some of the natural characteristics of the leather, which is offset by embossing a grain and adding pigment to the hide."... so definitely not as durable and not likely to age well. At least it is not "bonded leather" which is not actually leather at all!

FUN FACT: "Genuine leather", contrary to common belief does NOT just mean "this is real leather" it is a GRADE of leather... the LOWEST grade of leather. So yes, it does mean real leather but more than that it, it tells you "this is the lowest quality leather we can sell that is still real leather" You mentioned it doesn't tell you where on the cow, quality, etc, when in reality it does... and it is telling you it is bottom tier leather. So I agree with your putting it in budget. But I thought you should know what Genuine Leather really means. It's not common knowledge but it is VERY helpful info when choosing a product. Top Grain and Full Grain are the other grades, and are better grades of leather. So not to be THAT person but there isn't Genuine Top Grain... kinda like how there isn't a Bachelor's Master's degree

About 12 years ago, at Pottery Barn outlet, I scored a solid wood farm table on sale and it still looks good. It was used as a Christmas decor display table; there was no price so they sold it to me for $50! That was the best Christmas present, ever!

A couple of months ago, i did a TON of research finding someone to build me a custom classical guitar. What i found was that you get what you pay for--up to a certain (flexible) price point, and above that, you're pretty much paying for name recognition/prestige more than any significant increase in quality. It kind of sounds like furniture might be a similar deal.

I agree with your product points, thanks! Take heart, low budget people. Eight years ago I bought an Ikea dining table b/c that's all I could afford. It is still looking great, no dings or scratches, and we used it every day. It has 2 leaves which allows me to seat 8 (10 in a pinch). While I would LOVE a higher budget table, my Ikea table works wonderfully for us :)

I would like to add to this, that we recently bought what we thought was a mid tier table(based on the cost, new), but sadly, while the wood is solid oak strips, the metal fasteners are loose and can't be fastened due to the characteristics of the oak they've chosen. So while the wood is fancier than what they offer at budget ikea, it's not suited to the design of this specific table. So be cautious when looking into mid tier, so not only the surface is what is worth more money but the whole design is thought through. In hindsight I wish I would have insisted on getting a old mid tier table second hand instead.

I have the same experience. I have a black/brown dining table that I bought from IKEA around 10+ years ago. Very sturdy, looks like solid wood, still holding it’s color, locking mechanisms still work great & has two leaves seating up to 10. I’ve seen very similar tables that are much much more expensive. When I think of my table, I just smile. If I remember correctly, it was under $300. To this day, I’m still very happy with my purchase.

Yep me too cause it was the only wood table I could afford but its still going strong. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, crafts, sewing, games night im astonished! I'm nervous to buy more expensive in case, like the other comment, it turns out to not be such good quality. I dont mind paying if it will last.

I live alone and except for maybe eventually trying my hand at making the Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner one of these years (and my family is small, so it would be no more than five people at the table), I don't intend to have anyone eating at it other than myself on a daily basis. I know for certain I don't want children and while a partner would be nice, it's optional. So for the time being, it's just me, myself, and I, lol. I don't want to spend even a grand on a dining room table set and anything over even $700 sounds rather high for me. I have more specific ideas on how I want the rest of my apartment to look and likely will be purchasing online for those things, but for the dining room table, think I'm going to thrift that and see what I can stumble upon. Might find something much cheaper and nicer than what I've been seeing online for my given price range.

I like Ikea stuff, but the longevity difference between low budget version and mid-tier and high-tier is not in years, but in decades. A well made leather sofa, a table expertly crafted from solid wood, a handwoven wool rug, can handle hundred+ years of use. Of course, most of us these days aren't buying furniture intending for them to last that long, so low budget versions are perfectly good :)

LOVE your channel! One of the things I have been doing over the past couple of years is getting really, really nice furniture used. I have two RH dressers in my house that were (barely) used and I paid about the same as I would for a dresser on Wayfair (more than IKEA but way, way less than the RH sticker price). My solid wood dining room table ended up being $800 used, and it was $4,000 new. My Mom scored an entire Ethan Allen like-new dining room set (china cabinet and all) for $300. It cost more to hire people to move it! Ain't no shame in doing whatever your budget will allow, but I do love keeping things out of landfills.

The problem with jute, sisal, and sea grass, all of which I tried at some point, is that they are not very resilient. Even seagrass doesn’t hold up well, something I learned the hard way by getting a custom sized seagrass rug due to a large area that needed covering. Foot traffic breaks down the fiber, not to mention that our dog is a puker, and wasn’t that fun, and the natural latex on the backside broke down quickly so that the rug damaged my hardwood floors. I’m never getting anything other than 100% wool again.

I also thought that jute would be a nightmare to clean or dust so even if I thought they looked pretty I never splurged on them 😂

Do you sell your furniture online? We just bought a Craftsman house and I'm struggling to find content about how to decorate it because everyone wants to talk about more modern styles. Checking out a local lumber company could be worth it for a dining table. We found a walnut custom made dining table that seats 8 for $1500! The company mostly sold lumber in bulk but had some random furniture they'd made. Not sure if other companies do that but it could be worth an ask!

Love this! I love how you pointed out it depends on how much use the item is getting! My s/o and I rarely use our living room, we typically are sitting at our computers or cuddled on the bed watching a streaming service. So we spend more on comfy desk chairs and a nice mattress and topper, and are buying a cheap but adorable little sofa from Wayfair because it will mostly be used when we have friends over...which honestly isn't often.

I love the look and texture a jute rug brings to a space. I have a few. The down side for me has been having the rug on a wood floor. The jute fibers break down very easily and create a "dust" that will act like sandpaper on your floor if you are not diligent about vacuuming it up daily. A high quality felt pad is a worthwhile investment, however, it might cost as much as the rug.

Definitely spend the money on the couch. We had a $2k pottery barn sectional that we loved. Had it for over 7 years and then passed it on to a family member who still loves it. We weren’t looking to spend that much again so chose a couch half the price from a local fine furniture store. We hate it. It was comfortable for the 30 mins we spent in the store on it but not for hours of family time. Every time we sit on it we wish we would’ve bought the pottery barn couch again. It’s only been a year and we’re about to get rid of it and buy the PB couch. So now it’s like we should’ve just bought the PB couch to begin with. 🤦‍♀️ 🙄

When we bought a leather sofa 15+yrs ago I was really concerned about the leather quality after seeing a lot of friend’s sofas peeling and cracking but I also had budget constraints. I went with a Thomasville sofa and gave up the customization and choose a style that only had one color option. The quality of leather was high but the cost was kept down because it only had one color option. All these years later it’s a nice soft leather that reminds me of the old Air Force flight jackets.

I have a jute runner rug in my kitchen with a smaller fake Persian runner on top of it really helps with cushion and easy to hose off when needed. I love leather couches, REAL leather is not hot and sticky like the faux stuff, it breathes and gets softer with use and proper care. We just commissioned a new dining table from a local furniture maker in our small town- I was looking for a 48” square expandable table but couldn’t find what I wanted- so, we commissioned one with a 24” leaf- yes, it seems large, but the 48” square will seat 8 easily and when expanded it will seat 12, but the main reason for that particular size is we are card players and we generally host game night at our house with another couple and sometimes 2 couples or when it’s my husband’s turn to host poker night with the guys (usually 8-10 show up), we have just the dining area, no extra family room and our living room has French doors so any wives that are invited along, we hole up in their to either chat or binge some movies. The cost of the oak table will be $3,000, but it is so worth it! Everything in our house is curated from low to high end, if I like something I will buy it (unless it’s high end, that takes not just a lot of thinking about but making sure I save $ for it before purchasing, nothing is impulsive). We run from modern-transitional- mid century-cottage/farmhouse-very vintage (about 80+ years old). We don’t stay in one theme or style but everything flows because the wood pieces are in the same wood family or wood tone from mid-color to dark and aged, upholstery is classic fabrics of velvet and linen (other than our leather sofa) and solid color, for me I have burnt umber and slate blue tones- I can add or change other colors and patterns on them in pillows, throw blankets, curtains, other decor and it all flows together and allows me to change soft decor out on a whim. And plants are staples in my home as I am allergic to flowers and they are natural air filters (though we have air purifiers in all rooms as we live in farm country and have 2 dogs), the bedrooms have 2 plants in them, my kitchen has a lot of herbs and my living and dining is where the hoard lives.

I know you posted this years ago, but THANK YOU for such a helpful video (and channel overall!) I'm just starting out in purchasing furniture on my own and I keep struggling to decide low vs mid budget! It's deciding if I go low budget because I'm early in my career, but risk low quality, or go mid-tier and need to save a bit longer (AKA, no couch for a while) but potentially end up saving because the quality ensures longevity. This was so helpful in understanding what I value so I can begin to decide when to spend and when to save.

Very informative and appreciate the focus on understanding what is valuable to you. I didn’t read all the comments but one aspect I didn’t see mentioned is delivery. The couch my daughter just bought from Wayfair arrived in an enormous cardboard box that a couple of truck drivers dropped in her LR. She unpacked it and attached the legs in contrast, the table I bought from C & B was unpacked, assembled, and placed in my DR. Of course with IKEA you’re completely on your own. I value “white glove” delivery. 😀

retailers can label bonded leather as genuine leather. it may be 100% real leather but it will actually fall apart. think of it like a wood composite/particle board; it's flakes of leather bonded together, then embossed with a hide pattern.

Thanks for this video, so relevant! We recently relocated and are looking for some new furniture items, as we could not bring everything with us. Also very interesting - is the durability and cleaning/ stain impact of some materials. For carpets were were told in the shop that pure wool carpets do not stain and sort of repel dirt etc naturally, whereas the blends and more synthetic fibres can absorb and stain far more easily. Not sure if it was just marketing shop talk but found that quite interesting and compelling for the natural wool options.

He even mentioned "this is by no means super premium or luxury" (5:40) so calm down on the semantics of "high end". Compared to the other retailers he listed it is. For most people, the thought of a couch about the size he showed costing $10,000 is ludicrous, let alone sectionals costing $25,000-60,000+. Consider the average annual salary for the majority of your country, and try to explain the value of spending all of it on a couch.

I usually end up at mid-tier or the higher quality items at budget stores because… Things I value: - good quality materials Things I don’t value: - customization - it’s exhausting to have too many options - pre-assembled - I can always hire a taskrabbit for $100 and usually the price difference is way more than that

I love living room rugs so much, and Ive owned pretty much every type over the years. However, and this is where it gets gnarly, I´ve had to dispose of pretty much all of them because we have three dogs, and puppy times, upset stomachs, and now lately, the sunset years of one of them, makes it impossible not to spend a bloody fortune on drycleaning. All I can have is a rather thin cotton one, that still gets machine washed pretty frequently. "And that is why we can´t have nice things"... ☺ To tie it in with what Nick is saying, I´d be a fool (and have been) to spend a a lot of money on a durable, beautiful carpet only to watch it get destroyed pronto.

True, most of its ply with veneers, granted this makes sense given the scale of their pieces and mass production (for example a small woodworker could oversee wood choice easily), it certainly has a huge upcharge due to brand recognition, or maybe the price is what gives it that clout to begin with

I get most of my furniture used and my goodness I can get a 50 year old beautiful solid wood piece that needs dust and polish for a fraction of the price of brand new pressed cardboard junk. I am seriously in love with what quality once was. I get this vibe that older products were built to last and newer things are so often built to break down. Perhaps that's just me looking to very common items. I think to get decent furniture these days you have to pay soooo much. I see so many people buying cheap furniture that makes a home look quite a lot like a big dorm room.

My closest Ikea is 2.5 hours away, and their shipping is so exorbitant, I mostly shop second hand stores, marketplace, etc. for similarly priced items of higher quality. My dad is a carpenter and goes into peoples houses and builds them furniture. In the trade using better and higher quality materials doesn’t reflect on the price the customer is paying and this is true for 90% of companies. A higher quality material that can cost say $200 to build will reflect in something lime a 600-800 dollars increase in what the customer is paying, so some times it is not really worth it
