Yes, this is the one that influenced me to demand justice and equal pay when I was scared to challenge corporate America. Glad I did and "Won't Back Down" was my fight song. P.S. : I prevailed.
Tom Petty loved Elvis Presley growing up. He met him as a child and studied him very closely for years. He decided that he loved the rhythm guitar and realized that it was the most important part of the band. That is why his music is so restrained. He loves making the rhythm guitar the basis of the song.
"Here Comes My Girl" is top-tier Petty as is all of the "Damn the Torpedoes" album from which "Refugee" is from. A whole album reaction is definitely warranted.
Great observation from the Collegiate Shack of Freedom and Music. Steely Dan would have covered that slinky guitar with more slinkiness, FTFOI. I've been listening to this type of music for 50 years and you fellows cause me too glimpse different perspectives. I enjoy it.
"Here Comes My Girl" should be next, in my opinion. If you liked his singing in "Refugee" and "Breakdown," you should love it in this song; he kind of does a talky singing thing. Also, great guitar, drums, bass, and keyboards, with a cool groove.

Everything right in the pocket, not a wasted note, not an extra bar. TP & the Heartbreakers were masters of stripped-down, straight ahead rock n’ roll. And such an incredible live act, they were consummate players.
Petty is an American treasure with so many good songs that have great lyrical content combined with exceptional musical production. Wildflowers his solo album is a masterpiece. My favorite Heartbreakers songs; The Waiting, Refugee, Anything thats Rock n Roll, Deliver Me, Learning to Fly
I came here for this. The live version of Breakdown is a must. At least where I lived, that’s the one they played on the radio, that is the iconic version.
“American Girl” is as Petty as you can get. Try Traveling Wilburys “End of the Line” and “Handle With Care” wonderful. Harrison, Dylan, Lynne, Petty and Roy Orbison. Unbeatable
I heard American girl in the car I guess it was '78.It blew me away.Of course it was some station that played a block of songs and didn't say who or what they were and it took me weeks to figure it out.I still use the opening guitar riff as my cell phone ring.
I love American Girl. The boys already did it, and were strangely not so impressed. I suspect they may change their minds at some point about that one.
I hope you work through Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers chronologically. Experience the band the way those of us who were around back in those day did, one album at a time and how the band achieved their sustained success.
Charismatic is the word. I saw TP in concert from the nosebleed seats in a huge arena in the 80s and he was incredible. Held each fan in the palm of his hand effortlessly. Nothing flashy. Super laidback, soft spoken. Pure charisma. Tom Petty was one cool dude.
My vote for the next Petty song goes to Last Dance with Mary Jane. Killer groove, his voice sounds badass, and the harmonies and intricate melodies are incredible. It may be 1993, but that’s one of his biggest hits
My vote as well. His legacy has left us with so many great tunes. "Free Fallin", "Even the Losers" and "A Room at the Top" are 3 others I like as well. Eddie Vedder did an acoustic version of "A Room..." at the Academy Awards "In Memoriam" segment that requires Kleenex
You guys have to check out the song, "You got lucky." Its one of Tom Petty's best songs and my personal favorite. "Good love is hard to find. You got lucky babe, when I found you." Those lyrics say it all.
Steely Dan is 2 guys and a bunch of studio musicians, Petty and the Heartbreakers are a self contained group of 5 guys, All great at what they do. Mike Campbell is the most underrated guitarist in Rock.
One more suggestion: Robert Cray, Smoking Gun or Strong Persuader. Blues licks, soulful singing, and great storytelling. He's often overlooked, but lotta folks here will know who he is.
Here Comes My Girl has always been my favorite Petty song. And some of the later 80s/90s stuff is still totally worth a listen: Mary Jane's Last Dance, Free Falling, It's Good to Be King, Into the Great Wide Open. Understated but immaculate songwriting and production.
Glad you enjoyed this one. Don't be dissing "American Girl." Where was it? On the same album, his debut. "American Girl" is the last song he and his band played before he passed. It's probably the song that has been out there used in shows, movies, etc, the most. I don't know that Petty has a strict Tier-system of songs. I think the listener makes up his own order on how much he/she enjoys each song. "Even The Losers," "The Waiting," "Don't Come Around Here No More," "Free Fallin'," "Wildflowers," "Listen To Her Heart," "Learning To Fly," "Room At The Top," "Dreamville," "Accused of Love," "Jammin' Me"...20 or 30 others...the lines of delineation are in the ears of the beholder.

You guys remember that you loved his voice in "Stop Draggin My Heart Around" with Stevie Nicks too. I love his voice. It's not trained and it's so rock and roll. RIP Tom.

Tom Petty is awesome, saw him and the Heartbreakers one of the BEST concerts I've ever been to....next to the Eagles!!! Both were top notch! Tom always has cheeky lines in his songs. I love "You Got Lucky", "Don't Do Me Like That" "Last Dance With Mary Jane" "Runnin Down A Dream" and "Rebel Without A Clue" he also did a song with Stevie Nick's "Stop Dragging My Heart Around" Tom Petty is GREAT driving or road trip music too!
"It's alright if you love it, it's alright if you don't" S tier for me. I first heard this song in '77 and was hooked. It became a crowd favorite at his concerts and the song that taught me what real dirty dancing was. RI P Tom!!!

Tom's voice from day one and then throughout their musical history, was an instrument, not just his identity, and I think he used it that way on purpose, not to dismay those who don't like change, but I suppose you had to be there along the way; his voice in no way seemed out of place as it morphed into each new song/album.
At the beginning, he sounded a bit like Elvis Costello (or Elvis sounded like him). It's amazing how he changed his voice and still you knew it was him.
I think 'Damn the Torpedoes' is worthy of a whole album revue. Several big hits and the B-side is full of deep cuts and hidden gems like "Shadow of a Doubt" "Louisiana Rain" and "What Are You Doin' in My Life". And you must do "The Waiting" ( is the hardest part) like waiting for you to do the songs I have been suggesting. Cheers Gents!! Happy weekend everybody!
I Need To Know I had never heard any Petty(this was ‘78),and a guy that ran a record store played it for me.The guitars just blasted out to start the song.Wasn’t a hit,but it made me a lifetime fan.
I couldn't even begin to pick a favorite Tom Petty song. Love the old stuff, love the mid-range peak of his career, love the later stuff as well. This is just one of many great songs.
S tier all the way. I heard this song when it first came out and after thousands of listens, I still listen to it and have never tired of it. NONE of his other are perfection like this. Such a cool groove! This was not overplayed on the radio in its day which was such a plus - I felt like it was my little secret 😌. I knew you’d freak out just on that first beat and you did! We are musically as one on every song!
That's an opinion that I neither agree nor disagree with -- it's all good, just different to me. I'll give his earlier work the edge for live energy, but I personally think his songwriting peak was in the 90s.
“Don’t do me like that” is on an even playing field. I think you’d respond to Refugee more positively if you’d heard this first. The gateway song to a band or artist is so important to how well received the next song will be.
The production on that track is fantastic. If you haven't seen it, you should check out Rick Beato's episode on it. It will give you a huge appreciation for it.
The thing about Tom Petty is that as he morphs and grows in popularity and fame, his songs get more pop-ee, catchy and bland. I find his earlier work far more interesting.
Tom Petty albums are PERFECT for a long afternoon drive. Just enough variety. Good lyrics you can listen to or ignore. You can focus or zone out. Tasty and always reliable.
If you guys can find it you really should watch the performance of I won't back down during the 9/11 America tribute that was on TV. The look on Petty's face will give you chills. You can tell he was dead serious and not messing around

Andy & Alex, of course there are more worth hearing. Tom Petty (with or without the Heartbreakers) has a 40 year catalog. Also, don’t listen to those posting that the early work is so much better. There is a lot of music from his long career worth hearing.
You want a song as good as Breakdown? Last dance with Mary Jane is the song you're looking for. Probably my favorite song by Tom and the Heartbreakers.

My grandmother ran a pool hall in the 70's and this got a LOT of play on the jukebox. I remember the guy who changed out the 45's periodically would let me choose a few songs. Many were the times I'd pull a wooden crate up to my favorite pinball machine and play, listening to bomb ass music like this. 🥰💜💚💛✌️
I remember the first time hearing Petty as young man. I didn't instantly love it. His voice has strange nasal quality but after listening to couple of his songs, hearing his top notch song writing, it didn't take long for me to come around. There's something to say about originality. He's definitely got that. Almost 40 years later I never tire of his music and he's one of my favorites.
