For me what I think I enjoy the most about Fromsoft games other than the gameplay is always the art direction. The memorable and uniquely twisted way most things look in these games makes it a joy to explore and see what will scare me next. It is so good that I went out of my way to get the official art books for the entire series.

Also that most challenges won't lock you in to one path of success, whether it's using items you'll have access to or being aware of the environment, use whatever you can to your advantage and you'll overcome even this biggest screen sized challenges thrown at you."

The stamina bar most definitely fits Dark Souls and Bloodborne for the horror aspects and Monster Hunter for the survivalist ones. Now I love Code Vein, but it clearly would’ve been far better to play without the stamina bar considering it’s trying to be more like Devil May Cry by comparison, and the stamina bar was also especially redundant since by the games’s own lore the player character cannot get tired or go hungry due to the vampire-like conditions they have (heck the characters in the game say it themselves).

The two kinds of horror I love the most is altered history annolog horror, like the Monument mythos series on Mr.Manticor. And the existential dread of being hunted by an unknown entity that is heather human nor animal.

I, unfortunately, wasn't 12 when I played the first Dark Souls. I grew up on a diet of unforgiving 1980's video game mechanics and survival horror table top games ( D&D, Rifts, Call of Cthulu, ect). After the initial wtf moment of almost becoming an overweight demon's but plug I unloaded all my fireballs and bombs into the thing and got rewarded with a club that I wasn't going to be able to use for a Long Time. But it was too late, I was already hooked on the mix of adrenalin and dopamine that is the staple diet of the game. For a true sense of danger, you need at least a little bit of fear.

Agreed, I wish Dragon Rot in Sekiro effects whole world around you as story progresses, kinda like Bloodborne when you get too much insight and start seeing things humans can't, with different variety of enemies. They tried but all it affects was NPCs itself which you can restore back to normal with one item most vendors got😅

I do think tears of the kingdom sort of remedied the lack of horror thanks to the depths. The sky was what all the trailers focused on but most people I've talked to agree the unnervingness of the underground was their favorite part 9f the game.

The only thing I really disagree on is that the game is designed to be difficult in a way that you have to constantly fight and die over and over to figure out enemies movesets. I don't like this as it reminds me constantly that I'm in a video game and takes me out of the experience a little bit. I prefer a game that is challenging but is possible to make it most of the way through without dying. That way you can truly feel like you are this character in a way. It's a subjective style of immersion that I prefer
@zeallust8542
@zeallust8542 Год назад
You really dont have to keep trying to learn. Just take a step back and watch the enemy. Also, respawning is part of the lore. You arent coming back from death because its a video game, youre coming back from death because you have the curse of immortality.
@zeallust8542
@zeallust8542 Год назад
What is a challenging game that you can complete only dying a few times? Because that sounds like an easy game to me.
@zeallust8542
@zeallust8542 Год назад
Especially in Dark Souls, dying over and over again is very important to the story. Its how hollowing works, a person hollows when the struggle is too much and they give up on their life (your run) and become hollow (the zombie-ish characters you fight). Every character you meet has likely died several times, and came back from it. They have the curse of the undead. Siegmeyer for example, his daughter literally talks about him and says "If he goes Hollow, I'll just have to kill him again.". Death is a common part of life in this world. At least for the accursed. Sieglinde, has killed her father so many times that its a casual thing for her. She doesnt have the curse, if she dies, shes dead. But her father does. Victory in Dark Souls doesnt come from beating the game in few deaths, victory comes from never losing the drive, never giving up, and continuing on regardless of how many times it kills you. The characters in the game have been fighting this, you have been fighting this, it would be immersion breaking if you DIDNT die. In the words of Andre, "dont you dare go hollow". It literally means "dont give up, and dont lose sight of why you fight"
@gman7774

@@zeallust8542 yeah I get all that. I just don't enjoy it. I like to enjoy the whole experience not just when I finally take down something that has killed me 60 times

I agree with your statements about the horrifying nightmare creatures... however, when your clawing your way through chests with mouths and multi-limbed monsters, there is nothing more scary than a normal looking dude, you've just spent your way clawing through monstrosities and then at the end your expecting this menacing creature but instead a dude just slowly turns around to look at you and it's like"i shouldn't be here!!". And then your turn around and your locked into a cage match with the mother fucker. It's beautiful

Spoilers ahead, but I wanted to share the capstone of the feeling that is described here that I had the luck to experience. Now, ive been playing these games since Dark Souls 1, I think I can count myself a souls veteran. This world sucked me in to its secrets and horrifying and juicy details. So much to explore, so many goodies to find, so many things to get killed by. I had to find it all. However the capstone I think, is rightfully, the final boss, which takes one HELL of a journey to get to in the first place, which if you wander as much as I did, could take you upwards of 200 hours to get to. Having searched high and low for every boss, secret area and dungeon I could reasonably find, I was ready. Seeing the twisted beauty of this long forgotten and destroyed figure half merged with the fragments of it's old religious icon, I was awed and intimidated, but most of all ready for a glorious fight. Now imagine my shock when I merrily wind up a lightning spear to start off the fight and chuck it, only for this man to SMACK IT OUT OF THE AIR LIKE DARTH FUCKING VADER. "Hey hold up man can we talk abo-" right before he impales me into the ground with his returning shot and hammering it in deeper like he's working at home depot. Have to say, only ever been quite in so much shock and horror respawning after finding a boss since my first attempt at Orphan of Kos. Which admittedly, ended about just as fast. The bosses, the challenge and achievement is most of my motivation for playing these games, but the sense of awe, horror, and curiosity at their nature is what draws me to find them where they hid away in their holes, and FromSoftware never disappoints me on the journey there. From the lowest Beastman to the Legends of Old, these games never cease to leave me eager to scoop out god's eyes with a spoon.

I agree with almost everything on here... except the idea nioh didn't have the same fear. Playing it blindly the "melt or be melted" mentality and the nature of yokai, human, and beast type enemies having such different combat approaches made me way more nervous than I was in sekiro or the surge.
