hahaha. actually a LOT of people arguing Korra bitch about the animation too...and most of the criticism to the story is just because there is a "gurl" in the main character seat...
@@EmilyWen-er6tj I believe the instance you're thinking of was in Book 2. She said that she had always started fights, and didn't know how to prevent them.
Giving an airbender 3 layers of clothes, a massive beard, and chest length hair and then making him fight half a dozen guys in capes is the ultimate display of dominance
I just about passed away when they decided to animate _both_ Boondocks and Korra. I also eyegasmed when I remembered that fight scene with Tenzin. Sigh, I will never amount to the artists that are the staff of Studio Mir. 😔
Book 1: animating robes Book 2: animating long hair Book 3: animating a man with long hair, a long beard, and robes fighting against 12 guys wearing capes
Wasn’t the greatest fan of korra but the animation was stunning and hearing the work behind it was just heartwarming and made me appreciate it much more
Agree 👍🏻 I was amazed by the animation in the show when I first saw it. I knew the production was hard, but couldn't imagine the level of difficulty before this video .. 😵
I wasn't a fan of Korra, either. I am a fan of the villains. The way they act and their backstory. They are great!!! Except for book 2... He's as dumb as its animation.
hate backhanded comments like these. we get it. the loud internet minority HATES korra, so much so u cant even compliment the genius animation without saying "eh i wasnt a fan of the show" yada yada. its overdone and unnecessary, dont you guys get tired of repeating it?
@@kingkylie9655 This wasn't that. These people were just pointing out that while they personally did not like the show, the animation is universally great. I liked Korra more than ATLA. I will however point out that ALTA was the better show, because thats facts. Korra was more my speed and i enjoyed it more for various reasons of my own tastes, but whats good is good and over all ATLA was the superior show. A backhand would have been "The animation was great, too bad the show was shit" or something like that. Personal preferences don't count because all they were saying was that they personally were not a fan. I am not a fan of Gravity Falls, but its definitely a good cartoon. I just personally am not interested in that type of story.
@@sxb2andtheotherguys Don't worry, I'm not one of the radical Korra gruppies, I myself recognize that some parts of the plot are sincerely insufferable, but nothing is perfect in this world.
Korra is rapidly growing on me as I'm starting to find the more subtle nuances I missed first time around. Biggest problem going into LoK from ATLA is the expectation of identical tones and themes from the original show. If you approach it as its own thing and not strictly as a sequel of the first it is much easier to appreciate. And the animation in LoK is absolutely brilliant, particularly the action scenes, and this video finally answered why that was.
I wasn't aware of the production issues and all that Korra faced. Still, love the show and I'm thrilled that Studio Mir continues to kick butt all over the place!
and leaked episodes leading to the move from TV to online...Korra really couldn't catch a break. Full respect for the creators and animators for sticking it out on this passion project.
Now THIS is what I call a proper Korra review! As someone who has watched both Aang and Korra in full, I enjoyed Korra just as much if not even more than the OG series. From the gorgeous steampunk art style, to the inventive worldbuilding, to the expressive characters, to the genuinely intimidating opponents, to the sappy humor, to all the innovations in bending and robotics, Legend of Korra is a MASTERPIECE. I was captivated by the show and its efforts to pay tribute to Avatar history, while not being afraid whatsoever of crafting its own history. Fans may always have more nostalgia for Aang and the epic finale that was Book 3, but I feel that Korra showed maturity and morality at a deeper level, which is everything that a sequel series should be and more. At the end of the day, I slightly prefer Legend of Korra, and it certainly does not deserve the hate that it gets. Well, haters gotta hate, but that doesn't mean they are right. :)
same here, I actually prefer Korra. It felt like that in The Last Airbender, Firelord Ozai was evil just for the sake of being evil. Korra's villains all had good reasons and intentions, kind of like Thanos in Marvel movies. Watching Korra made me consider whether or not the "bad guys" are actually that bad. Of course, in the end, it was obvious, especially with Unalaq, but still, it gave me a lot more to think about and the whole show gave us a better opportunity to explore different aspects of the Avatar universe, like the spirit world and how the Avatar came to be.
@@TobyKate Even in the case of Unalaq, despite being obviously evil, the way he manipulated Korra and told her exactly what she wanted to hear to get her to do what _he_ wanted was brilliant
@@supereinstien001 Yes and in the end, she left the portals open which turned out to be a good thing (looking past the misuse of the vines in the last book)
Even though I still prefer ATLA and think it's a better show in terms of quality I still love The Legend of Korra. The characters are deep and enjoyable, the action and animation are just perfect, the way the worldbuilding is well made is clever considering they had to present us a "post-ATLA" world that felt like a actual evolution of what we've seen before, and the villains are some of the best I've seen in animation (besides Unalaq and Vaatu, they lack a lot in my opinion but still). The story might not be as consistently good, season 2 for example is really weak compared to the rest and some characters could have more development but that doesn't justify the hate the show gets, and I'm glad to see that more people agree
The reason why TLOK is still my favorite non-japanese animation work. Nothing can tops it, the quality and the beautiful fighting animation. I dont get why people still compares both Avatar series, but whatever it is, i'd still wish both series were adapted in today's time where they dont have the creative restrictions from Nick, like how they decided to tone down Korra and Asami's relationship because it wasnt kid-friendly back then. But now, time has changed...and how i secretly wish they were done during this present time. But whatever it is, thank you for this video Canipa. I know japan has a lot of good anime but i still feel Korra has the best fighting scene in animation history ever (i mean, when the characters in TLOK fight, they have that gravity y'know what im saying? they have that oomph weight, where you could just feel the pain and guts of the brawl just like watching a real MMA fighting match)
Honestly, I think there's a lot of people even at Nickelodeon who were hoping it was made a little bit later. It was a show that ended up being loved by young adults at a time when that age group wasn't watching TV anymore. A few years later, and it would've been greenlit as a very successful Netflix Original series like Voltron: Legendary Defender.
@@TheCanipaEffect i know i wanted to say "how i wish TLOK were under Netflix platform instead of Nick", but thinking back after how Netflix did Bryke dirty with the ATLA live action adaptation, i decided not to write that. But still, how wonderful TLOK would be (under Netflix) despite the irony, like She-ra. It was a real celebration to all representation 💖
@@alicesiapilus5410 It's a difference of production companies. Netflix doesn't usually have any creative input on the shows that are exclusive to their service. Instead, the Avatar live-action production company is the main one to blame with that IMO (Although I don't think any Avatar live-action should be made in the first place).
Finally! The Legend of Korra gets some appreciation! People really took this show for granted without realizing that it was one of the last animated shows to use traditional 2D animation, and it's a gorgeous looking show! Most animated shows these days are relying on a cheap flash or 3D animation, and don't even get me started on animated movies which dropped hand drawn animation completely. I personally think that The Legend of Korra is a brilliant show all around, not only from an animation standpoint, It's very underrated imo. Great video man, and it was awesome to see Toph and Korra's voice actresses!
What's odd is that when it came out, there was a big hype even during season one and later, and we were watching it with my friends, agreeing ATLA was better but we were seriously in love with the show and were blown away by the animation. Been hearing about the negativity recently, but...I always liked Korra. The characters were memorable, music was amazing, just as designs, environments, voice acting etc. Sadly you could feel that the story was meant to be a one season spinoff later expanded, but it's not really their fault. Knowing this even back then I just accepted it and looked at it from that perspective.
Jae Myoung Yoo paying his artists by selling his own car for the money really hits hard. You can tell he has integrity and respect for his coworkers. All the strife the studios had to endure to make this masterpiece makes it all the more obvious how beloved and important the show was to them too. Studio Mir was so great to reclaim it, it really is THEIR show, and nobody could do it quite like they did! Awesome video, but I almost cried when they were talking about the animators sleeping at their desks
I get like a lot of the complaints about Korra.... but like holy shit the action dose not get talked about enoug, shit is so dope. Started watching korra after watching airbender over and over, then watched reactions over and over and then got really tired of it. Just burnt out on it and had no idea I wanted more action until I watched korra. God damn the fights were dope and there was a greater focus on them with no filler. Last Airbender is a masterpiece, but when I just want to watch some dudes brawl, korra is where it is at
@@BravoTango-vt8em nah korra has the better story and equally as good characters, korra is more complex and fleshing/expanding out the world and lore of avatar which is dope.
One of the greatest things of ATLA/TLOK is the voice actors. Just seeing the start, made me remember that, they love avatar as much as us the fans, and when someone has a cool project to show or to dosomething new, they get involved! That's just crazy. And I love it Oh and, awesome video honestly. TLOK art style and animation was just so clean
And then you've got people like Lily Orchard who lied to 5,000,000+ people by saying TLOK had poor animation quality. Imagine saying such a thing with a straight face.
I have so much respect for Tenzins action scenes with all those layers so advanced and so well executed! Such a cool look in the end and i wish we couldve seen more of it but i understand why lol
The debate over which show is better will rage on forever but there is one thing Korra stands head, shoulders and torso over Avatar and that's the animation quality. And I think thats not a controversial statement at all.
Controversial argument? Naw. It's a fact that LOK looked visually better but that's because they had more experience. ATLA was made earlier than LOK so the visuals are naturally different. Consider the time of the premiere of ATLA, it was stunning of course (still is). Animation evolves and improves! Studio Mir is such a powerhouse haha
@faiza ahmed everything on the internet is either the best ever or trash with no room for nuance. Legend of Korra can be both inferior to Avatar TLA while also being a good tv show which is where I fall in.
No matter how anyone feels about korra's series its undeniable that the animation is satisfying to look at. Very inspiring story. Alright I got some line work to do
Really makes us appreciate the work gone into animation, so many people underestimate just how much time and patience is needed to draw a single frame or episode. It doesn't help that animators in japan are so underpaid as well
I get you. Another part of why LoK stuck with me more is just preference. Parts of the plot and story-telling made me wince but the show made up for it in some way. Especially the Avatar beginnings and Book 3. But in any case, the animation is mind-blowing. Some people might prefer flashy and insane effects and angles, but watching the fights in LoK is like watching old-fashioned martial arts movies with no camera tricks and gimmicks. Just pure fight choreography and animation flex.
Same, and I went into TLOK wanting to see with my own eyes how bad it apparently was. And ended up loving it soooo much more than ATLA, and I grew up watching ATLA. TLOK amazed me that much, and not beacuse of the third season, which I find the weakest, but because of the other 3 seasons.
Legend of Korra had some of the best animation I've ever seen honestly. I wish the Anime studios were given more budget and more time to make their shows, Imagine just the amount of quality they could give!
I’ve held my tongue on LoK for sometime, but I must say, the creators of the show have some pretty big hearts as artists. It’s in the vein of Miyazaki the amount of care placed into their art. And they’re so magnanimous for looking out for their people and the overseas teams. I need watch LoK again just to honor their work
Legend of Korra is my favorite animated series of all time. Seein how much blood sweat n tears went into creating this show makes me soo appreciative. Fantastic vid y'all. I'll be sharing this always
Korra, for me, is so much more relatable than Aang. Watching her go through what her trauma, rebuild and grow from the beach teenager she was good such a special place in my heart. That my girl ❤️. That's my Avatar.
Agree! Story-wise, ATLA had a better flow, but overall I prefer LOK as my fave because of how relatable the problems and issues are, and how it's easy for me to empathize with the characters
@@JayAreAitch korra is a narcissist psychopath? Either you have zero critical thinking skills or you're projecting your own insecurities. Either way, seek help ❤️.
@@Paul94096 idk if you can't see how her behaviour indicates an inflated sense of self-worth and a lack of empathy then maybe you're the one lacking critical thinking skills.
Hey to everyone who help and supports this channel a HUGE thank you so much, for putting all this details and facts together, every new video keeps on getting better and super informative, it's like a small documentary, not only taking about if and why the show/anime is good or bad but also the story behind it, I truly appreciate the hard work and also take your time PS. If you ever want to put time on it, I would want to hear your take on the animation of a donghua call 'Fog Hill of Five Elements'; Donghua Reviews video did a great job talking about it overall, just curious about your stands on the animation since your video analysis are more animation based
i'm no animator or even an artist, but hearing you explain the animation process with the aid of clips from korra, it's made me love korra even more. i seriously applaud all the animators for their work, specfically studio mir because _wow_ their work is so detailed and smooth, and they drew my favourite avatar wan episodes.
You know what. I didn't like Korra so much, in the story department. But now after this video, Maybe I was a little harsh on it. Thanks so much @thecanipaeffect
@@blodiaaa6990It's really not a bad story. Like not even objectively, the story beats are there and it follows all the structure of writing you need. Subjectively it can be a can of dog shit if you want it to, but objectively it's at least an average story 5/10 (just FYI). My opinion even though you didn't ask is 7/10. Korra is a pretty cool character if you don't let your love for the old cast blind you.
@@Romaninx “if u don’t let your love for the old cast blind you” that is so accurate man. Also imo it doesn’t just go for Korra herself, but for the show. If you expect to have a show as good as ATLA, you’ll be disappointed. But if you forget about ATLA for a bit and try to enjoy LOK as its own thing, it gets a lot more enjoyable. I personally love both shows equally. And i don’t really care if “the story is unrealistic” or whatever I just wanna enjoy good avatar content. And I think LOK did a good job at creating new stories and characters for the fandom.
@@gurkenderschwinger1114 I think the story is insanely realistic and that’s one of the best part of LoK imo. Toph being a bad mother is realistic as she had terrible parents too. Aang being a flawed father is realistic bc he didn’t have parents and he had a duty as Avatar to revive the air nation with Tenzin. Korra’s struggle with mental health is insanely realistic. Korra’s romantic ineptitude is realistic bc she’s legit been secluded from society her whole life. The Red Lotus is a realistic splinter faction bc the White Lotus is obviously not the same as in ATLA. The rise of Kuvira is realistic due to the power vacuum. And finally Bolin’s story. He’s my favorite character bc of all he has to go through and how insanely realistic it is. An affectionate person who so often doesn’t get the affection reciprocated and thus in search of that affection whether it be from people or audiences in the movers or probending, often result in him being manipulating or abused and realistically, he continues to find himself in those situations, with Desna, Ginger, Varrick and Kuvira. Despite all of this people use the realism as some sort of criticism which is preposterous
_Story-wise and Character writing, I found that Legend of Korra drops the ball hard in some places (especially in Season 2), but I can't the deny that the art and animation is amazing. Studio MUR has top notch talent._
@@tutumazibuko2510 I genuinely don’t understand that critique, ATLA has some of the tightest writing I’ve ever seen in TV. The writing is universally acclaimed by critics.
@@littlelordfuckleroy3822 So is the writing for the Legend of Korra. Doesn't really make sense to have this double standards thing when you know it's true
I've always felt that Legend of Korra was some other level shit but now to actually learn about it in full detail makes me appreciate it that much more. Great video!
BRUH I LIKE KORRAS STORY AND ANIMATION. THEY WORKED SO HARD IN THIS AND STILL MAINTAINED A BETTER STORY THAN ANY CARTOON IVE WATCHED. Call me crazy but both avatars are masterpieces.
No one's gonna call you crazy for saying that, they truly are. They're both so insanely great in their own right. Like even if ATLA did not exist, LoK would STILL be one of the best shows to have been made.
Honestly people can hate on LoK all they want, but the fact is, if ATLA was the best animated show on television, LoK was still the second-best and literally the only reason I'd have turned on the TV back when it was airing. Then it went online and I didn't have to turn on the TV anymore.
Ok the end of this video made me tear up. Wow I knew they had obstacles but this is insane. I can't believe they managed to survive and still deliver powerful seasons. Everyone involved in LoK and Avatar is seriously some the best creators. Not just talent wise but from this they are honest and actually good people.
Great video as usual! I love learning about the little and big issues that LOK animators had to work through. Animators are often overlooked compared to voice actors and writers, but their work deserves to be uplifted
Brilliant video. Seeing the struggles they went through to execute their vision makes me sad about the initial response the show got. I didn't know about LoK until this past year and I don't know how people don't appreciate this show more. It has so many fantastic elements to it and I'm happy it's getting the recognition it deserves after coming out on Netflix. I hope the creators know how much their fans enjoyed their stories and characters. This video showed just how hard each person in the creative process how to work to make the series work, and I'm so happy they put in that work, as the results speak for themselves.
Toth in the intro? Boss move! Korra is such an underrated animated series, being bashed by so many lowlifes on the web. Thank you for highlighting every amazing thing about how beautiful this show was. What an awesome video.
im an old man and have been a fan of anime since i was pretty young. the animation in this series and just the attention to detail was jaw dropping. im re-watching the entire series now on netflix but yeah - if you can appreciate the talent behind this show, it really is amazing and special what we got.
I've watched TLOK for 3 times. I'm having goosebumps *every single time* I watch it especially on the fight scenes. The animation is insaaaane. I was so so excited watching the pro-bending. I would love to watch more of pro-bending matches.
You should definitely rewatch the scene where Zaheer escapes his cell, it was probably the most intuitive and impressively animated fight scene of the show.
I love this video! The way you presented each challenge and used clips from the show to represent what was going on in real life was amazing and I think you did really well writing to engage the watchers and make them gain a new appreciation to the teams that put together Korra.
This documentary is so eyeopening. Korra's artstyle has always been heartbreakingly beautiful and after watching this detailed breakdown of its behind-the-scenes history I feel I understand it a little better now.
This explains me to me so many of the thing I loved about this show. It felt like a totally new, better world that captivated and impressed at every turn. Thanks for making the video!
I’m an animation student and I often get burn out so easily. By watching this review makes me feel like I’m not working hard enough as those full-time animators who worked hard 100x and manage to put up an amazing show. Now I feel more inspired and studio MIR become one of my best underrated studios on earth!
I finally got a chance to watch this, and I'm crying. You did LOK justice. It's such an incredible show, and you just brought it to life. Korra is my favourite female character of all time; they didn't typecast her like so, so many other shows do, but made her a real person without emphasizing the fact that she's female. She's just a natural character, which is how characters should be. I relate to her so much and I've cosplayed her many times. Thank you so so much for this incredible video. I'm nearly done my third rewatch and it's just wow. Thank you Canipa Effect.
FUCKING INSANE !!! I did not know all of this shit about Korra makes me respect it even more as i've finished the series recently and i was astonished by the level of animation it reached !
Studio Mir really did an incredible job 🔥 I remember feeling such a breath of fresh air when seeing exactly how the world had evolved. The animation clearly was beautiful and clean but I particularly loved the background art of the landscapes. I just remembered being blown away seeing Zafou for the first time 😮
The hair animation in Korra is something that impressed me from the start, and something I don't see much in other animated shows (American or Japanese). I remember watching She-Ra right after finishing LOK and being super disappointed at how Adora's ponytail movement doesn't realistically match with her walking/fighting speed, for example. Overall, LOK's animation blew me away every single episode, and the quality difference is clear compared to other shows, including ATLA.
Studio Mir and their work on Korra is so legendary that I still watch clips of certain fights to this day. Some of the most fluid and detailed work I've seen.
I love The Legend Of Korra so much and I knew it was difficult to make and all, but with this video now I love it so much more. An experience, a part of history, a story you feel happy about its existence.
got one of those fancy new tvs a few months ago and rewatched korra along with all the old faves and wow it looked great and so vivid and smooth it was amazing feast for the eyes.
The music and animation in this show it just incredible. If I'm totally honest it has spoiled me a little when I try and go back to watch The Last Airbender.
Even when I was a kid I was absolutely in awe about the choregoraphy of the fightingstyles and everything about the series - I just went back and watched all four seasons in the past weeks, it's an absolute masterpiece
I love Korra with all my heart and I hope this incredible video makes its way to as many people as possible because it deserves to be loved as much as ATLA! Truly an incredible video, thank you for all your effort and research you put in to it!! :)
This video is an awesome treasure trove of behind the scenes details that I had no idea about (and I'm an animator). Thanks a lot for putting all these infos together, it's highly interesting. I was already highly impressed by the animation level of LOK when it came out, but all these stories definitely makes me respect even that much more all the people at studio Mir. Super glad that they're making it big in America, nowadays, thanks to their work on Legend of Korra (which should also be coincidentally renamed Legend of Mir).
Your videos are always eye opening. I love how you talk about animation in such a broad scale, even if your focus is anime. The animation world has so many more amazing things than just the more well known shonen anime. From different medias to creators around the world, there's an endless amount of variety in this art form, and they're all worth celebrating
Thanks! I was seriously thinking I'd be seeing more "Get back to doing anime!" comments, but instead it's more requests to cover more cartoons! Happy that people are so chill!
Thank you for making people realize what a masterpiece legend of Korra is. It's an absolute incredible show. It's impossible to not want more. Hopefully one day they will be fortunate to get a sponsor to Greenlight another avatar animation. Bending is so distinct it will always hold a place in my heart.
And this opens to more comics that will flesh out TLOK characters, like the red lotus, how did Amon learn to take someone's bending away and his rise as an equalist leader, mako and bolin's challeneges before becoming team avatar, lin and tenzin's previous relationship. And probably something i just like, Asami just being a ceo of her company, without bending, just her being corporate bad ass.
When it first came out, I didn't like LOK that much. Upon rewatch, I realised ir was because it differed so much from ATLA that it felt like something precious was lost. I love it now that I've rewatched. It's grand on a scale that ATLA wasn't, which was just... super super deep. I would love to see a third series. I would especially love to see a metalclan Avatar - or to see what would happen if the Avatar was to be a non-bender.
Well, the Avatar can't be born a non-bender. Raava houses all 4 elements, and 'bequeaths' it to the successor... You probably know this, but you're just wishing for a non-bender anyway... I get you.
A non bender avatar would have to move moon and stars to be respected as an avatar. That's what separate the avatar from the rest of the benders and non-benders, bending all the elements.
