@@shakukon-to 'Dude', what? If you listen to the full quote and understand how sports fan bases treat their athletes, let alone a market like Toronto, it's not difficult to see what he means. For better or worse, Leafs fans put the team on some of the highest pedestals in the sports world, it's just the reality of the sports culture in town - as an Eagles fan in Philly, I'm guilty of doing the same. Having said that, I can also recognize that acknowledging that dynamic, and the way it benefits the player, isn't a sin and sure as hell isn't an indicator of a god complex like some Leafs fans are claiming. I genuinely didn't realize the quote was controversial when I first heard it, not until the quote tweets started popping up later.

I don’t blame any Toronto fan for being upset and tired of the same excuse. I’m a Lightning fan, but we won the 2020 cup without Stamkos, except for that one game where he came in for about a minute thirty and sniped a goal. Then he was benched. I know I’ll hear the excuse of “the COVID cup”, but ask any of the players, and the bubble was the hardest time of their lives. Food was sub par, you couldn’t go anywhere or do anything. Couldn’t see your families for about 2 months. That’s rough! The Lightning made no excuses, and trust me, there was pressure from Tampa sports media after getting swept by Columbus to tear it down, trade Stamkos, fire Cooper, etc. there was no way this was acceptable. We had been a playoff team for so many years. Division champions for so many years. We finally broke through. No excuses. I simply feel for Toronto fans. I was hoping, praying for the Leafs to win and finally put the Bruin demon to bed, and then go beat the Panthers because I’m from Tampa and I can’t stand the Panthers. It just didn’t happen. Enough is enough. No more excuses. Tampa sacrificed everything to win. Their bodies and draft picks. I didn’t see the same from the Leafs.

Marner needs to go the same way DeMar DeRozan had to go. DeRozan was a well-liked, well-respected, All-Star level player, and the Raptors and the fans loved having him on the team. But the reality was that having him around wasn't enough to help the Raptors win, so they traded him. And we all know how it worked out. Mitch is great, but it's time if this team wants success.

They backed into the playoffs, they couldn't win at home until it was do or die, and most of their top players were not their top players in the playoffs. How do you expect a team that averaged 3.63 goals per game to win when they only average 1.71 in the playoffs? Answer: You don't.

I don't think Marner's quote is that bad, I don't think he means "gods" like people expect too much of them in terms of performance, that would be an insanely out of touch thing to say, I think he means more like the attention and cheering of the fanbase is like no other which is a fine quote. I actually prefer his response to Matthews and Nylander, I don't even know why they had to talk about the scapegoats and narratives just to try and defend Marner, if you wanna defend your teammate then just say "he doesn't deserve to bear the heat alone, it's a team effort and we lost as a team" that feels like it creates way less friction that what they said.

Great Video. Losing sucks. As a New England sports fan if it wasn't for Larry Bird Boston wouldn't have seen a Championship for a looooong time. In my hometown of Fitchburg MA, the Bruins had their preseason workouts there. Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito, and many more, my family, friends, everybody in New England came to see our team. Then one day they were gone and funny but the Bruins thru the years had good teams but not great enough to win the Stanley Cup until 2011. Losing again hurts but as a true fan, no matter what you still support and love your team. The Patriots we use to refer to as the Red Sox with helmets. Patience is a wonderful thing. Boston since 01 has won so many titles from all of their franchises the term Title Town, Boston took from Green Bay. Hopefully the Chips will keep on coming. You weren't anywhere, Johnny. The entire team wasn't there for games 3 and 4, and Marner the God, is a completely different player in the post-season. Tavares and Marner leaving would open up huge cap-space to build a better playoff team. The problem is, who the hell will sign for a team without a driven discipline coach, oft-injured goalies, and no balls. As for Shanahan? He needs to go.
@deltagolavista1
@deltagolavista1 16 дней назад
Leaf fans, get Marner and Tavares 'opening up cap space' if they are traded out of your heads. If they are traded, the Leafs are going to have to take salary back in any deal, or retain, or both. At most, the team will be saving $2-3M while having an inferior player(s) coming back and eating up rest of the cap. It is actually better, especially in Tavarse's case, to just have him play out the final year and resign him for lower, or let him walk. Then you'll have cap space.

@KS-xk2so Marner makes 10.9m, if they did retain it would only be for 1 season anyway. And retaining 2-3m could be the difference of a trade happening or not. Majority of teams spend to the cap and if they could get a year of Marner for 8-9m instead of 11m it could make a difference and Toronto would get more back
@KS-xk2so
@KS-xk2so 16 дней назад
@@justjohnny420 Given how cap strapped the Leafs have been forever, I doubt retaining is in the cards though. What's the point in moving out Marner if you then use that 11 million in cap space as 4 mill retained, and then get a worse player making say 7 mill?
@deltagolavista1
@deltagolavista1 16 дней назад
@@KS-xk2so Not one team atm can take on Mitch's full $10.9M. The Blackhawks are the closest with $10.5M free cap space.
