I have been using the pipe dope version of "Expando" for at least 50 years, the very best product for use when absolutely no leakage is acceptable. Also works well to get one more life out of damaged, old, or obsolete parts. My last application was to save two damaged 316L stainless steel tanks with warped, galled, and cross-threaded 4" male pipe thread outlets. Even with limited time and even less access space, Expando easily sealed the valves on perfectly the first try. Great stuff!
Great video. An im glad to see how you answered all that made a comment to you.. Looking forward to watching more of your videos. Frank from Bristol Connecticut USA
They almost always have a crack at it with a big machine and ruin the point when I've told them there is almost no chance, and then have less to spend on the blasting.
That Expando is amazing stuff - so effective. I think that is basically a quick lime chemistry? Your hard work most times is all the drilling! Great video Dave - you are getting (even) more inventive.
I have actually thought about this, drilling holes and putting refrigerant tubes down the hole, it does not get cold enough here to freeze all by itself.
Is there any blast free technology for metal mines maintaining productivity of Mining equipment. Please answer me. What alternative methods could be used for extracting minerals without blasting
That Expando stuff does a good job if you've got to be quiet about it, though if you're fully kitted up in PPE I don't much imagine it's pleasant stuff to get on your skin or up your nose. Can you only use it in the open air like that or can you use it in the ground too?
Wow; Happy Mother's Day Dave! Great music: what I assume to be Aussie Rock which seems appropriate given the excellent technology working we get "right here" in your video. And the little extra of having their transfer box on "solid Rock" too!
Demolition Dave Drilling and Blasting I appreciate your reply, that makes sense. Every job has its own difficulties and that can make price change in an instant. Cheers!
Fun to watch, and a darn good job! That cracking agent really works well, if you've got the time for it. Not as cool as blasting it, but a good deal less... energetic. XD The initial music cut was a touch jarring for volume with headphones (not complaining, just suggestion for next time, I watch all of these. :) )
stupid question time but ive noticed you sling a leg over the drill to help push it down , could you adapt the drill with a bit of chain in a loop to stick your foot in to save you having to do a leg over ?
Can you use the expando on a tree stump. It's 33 inches wide (84 cm?) still green, corner of the yard, impossible to get to with machinery, and grew into rock and chain link fence. I want to split it so I can dry it out and then burn it out....
No, I don't think that this idea will work Joe. If you are not in a hurry you can rot it using Potassium Nitrate. Drill plenty of holes in it and fill them up. Plenty of info on the net.
i am curious about why the holes for the expando have a minimum diameter. i am considering using it for a home project but drilling the large diameter holes is difficult. can it be used with 5/8" to 3/4" diameter holes?
Yes, drilling those holes is difficult and I'm sorry 2005 but trying to use cracking agent in holes that small... you would have a better chance of chopping down the forest with a herring
This big rock that we put the chemical in was a bit big for my plugs and feathers and we would have had no chance breaking out the pit. both the plugs and feathers and CCA are best for breaking down oversize, not much good at sectioning in situe rock.
Awesome stuff. Is Expando available commercially, or do you need special permits to purchase or use it? I’m planning on digging a fire-bunker on my farm (have council permission) in Tassie. Unfortunately, my property is almost completely 1-2m clay ( in places, no clay) over mudstone, which has metamorphosed at a meter or two further down. Would like to dig approximately 4-5m deep, but that would necessitate cutting around 3m into the mudstone. I have most of the toys ( the good ones - demo-drill/hammer, hydraulic-teaspoon as you call them) but don’t wish to use explosives, as I believe it would take multiple shots over many weeks to reach the depth I need.
Expando is just a cement based product, no special know how or permits required - some good amount of care is needed though as it is very caustic and will burn eyes and lungs if you are not careful. For Tassie you will need the cold variant - SCA- 3 and something that will drill 38mm holes, give John a call - expando.com.au/
Happy to see breathing protection! Most people don't understand the long term effects of breathing silicates. NOT pretty. A friend that used to run marathons was hospitalized due to a single exposure to silica dust.. = silicosis. No more marathons. No more running, period! Labored breathing for the rest of his now shortened life. The stuff gets into your lungs as a dry powder. Moisture creates a concrete like mess in all of the little air exchange sacks in your lungs. There is no way to remove it! Now, this mid 20s athletic man is surviving as if he has terminal emphysema. He was an excellent weldor, but now is restricted to only welding where EXCELLENT ventilation AND hot, restrictive respirators are available... and few job sites offer both. AUDIENCE !!! PAY ATTENTION !!! Dust from concrete and rocks can be deadly. Don't do it... Don't allow others, that are unaware, to do it. PLEASE...
You are 100% on the money John, I noticed early on the everybody that I would meet that worked in drilling and blasting had compromised breathing, I started out with just a basic half face respirator, then went to the best full face unit that I could buy and then vacuum the dust at the source also. Sorry to hear about your friend, did he have a very large exposure? is / was he a smoker?
@@demolitiondavedrillandblast He was not a smoker. Very athletic and health conscious. The exposure was a one time, but heavy exposure. Welding next to concrete demolition. Didn't like the dust, but was unaware.., and determined to do his job, no matter what.
Back in the Eighties we got blue rock that was hard on jackhammers so the engineer decided rockdrills were the go and for a month we drilled with freehand drills. Eventually we got it to depth with Explosafe. What a mongrel of a job
Hi Jeffery, I'm guessing that Explosafe is a similar product, there is a lot to learn in order to get consistent good results with these products, that said real explosives win out is you have the option. Yeah, it can be a mongrel job, even when you have a lot of practice.
Yeah, the Vac is a Pulman Ermator S26, I have 2 of these, highly recommended. They just sold out to husquana - www.husqvarnacp.com/au/machines/dust-collectors/s-26/967663902/ It is "H" rated (highest rating for capture of small particles) catches 99.99 % down to 0.3 microns. I also use a cyclone separator in line to catch the big bits. see more video of this here - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-N-HKpg22sU4.html
Yes, if the hole is making water slowly, just mix and have ready to pour, blow the water out with compressed air and a blow pipe and pour immediately. If the water is permanent, e.g. returns as soon as it has been blown out, you must first sleeve the hole with some 40mm plastic lay flat tube and pour into the tube, the very heavy chemical mix will displace the water. You can see me using the plastic sleeve in this video for pouring into near horizontal holes, the same tube is used for wet holes - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nWKP7NW3c1g.html
Hi Mark, it has a lot of quick lime in it and some other nasties and believe me, you do not want even the smallest amount in your lungs or eyes, full face protection is not being overly careful.
@@demolitiondavedrillandblast OK thanks i actually have that same model for my Soft cut saw new even thought i could use it for the rock drill. how are you directing the cuttings into the hose? what size do you mostly drill i usually drill 45 and 48 mm holes for a Darda or expanding grout. do you have a pic of your cyclone separator?
@@Nuccioconstruction OK, Please email me for more info and pictures - dave at demolitiondave dot com dot au - For pick up at the hole I use an inch and a half or for 45&48mm use 2 inch gal pipe tee piece, there are many cyclone separators available on Ebay these days, get one the uses 2 inch hoses.
Hi Andrew, I have a big job on the go at the moment and I guess that I have not shot much video on this one yet. One of the reasons that I have not posted any is that I will be here for while yet and I don't want to give the location away.
@@demolitiondavedrillandblast An excavator with a jackhammer mounted on it - when it can reach the concrete. If the excavator can't get close enough, do it the old fashioned way - a good man with a 90lb jackhammer. When I started in construction in the 70s, some of the old 120lb hammers were still in use. 8-10 hours in the hot sun with one of those would tire you out a bit, hehe.
Expando is similar to dexpan and ecobust and other similar products, looks like cement powder, you mix it up with water, pour it into the holes and it expands and cracks the rock. - www.expando.com.au/what-is-expando
Yes! have done one of those but it was a bit of a let down see here - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PdaLeO59CAU.html It is a bit difficult to set up as I need weather protection and theft protection and external power for the camera so not every job is suitable but will have another crack at it ASAP Goz
Three reasons Simon, despite using a pretty good dust collection system, you never get it all and any amount of stone dust in your lungs is very bad news, secondly in order to extend the working life of my drills I introduce a lot of oil into the airline, this is not good in my lungs. Thirdly the full face protection keeps all of the stone chips out of my eyes - this is a constant issue when using a rock drill and safety glasses alone do not prevent all instances. The mask is also an excellent protection when mixing the chemical cracking agent - this product has a PH of 14 and will burn your eyes and lungs.
Just imagine if you will. A super hero or villlain similar to plastic man with the powers to break solid objects by expanding. If you called him Expando, would there be a copyright issue? :D
@@demolitiondavedrillandblast Thanks.Hmm..,Now if only I could actually draw. He would need an arch nemesis or two. Demo-Dave or Master Blaster have a nice ring. I'm also thinking a rock people army. Whatcha think? :D
no real improvement in technology over the last 200 years? no high tech ultrasonic drill or laser thermal shock boring device? no hydraulic wedge system to replace the hammer ones or the expando?
No, no, Bruce, there is the Darda hydraulic splitter, I've never made enough money to buy one of these tools, my friend Yuriy Pchelintsev has heaps of them - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7Y_wf6NSdH8.html
Made easy if.......you already own a trailer compressor and drill and a military grade gas mask and have a license for explosives. You need to make a video for easy rock breaking and the whole video is someone making a phone call to you and then writing you a check. :))) That’s the easy way.
🦜au - G'day Dave - Remember how they split rock in ancient / Roman days . they put wooden dowels in holes keep dripping water on wood expands & cracks You should do a video on this drill a hole & put a long wooden dowel down it with a bottle dripping water 💦 experiment Should make quite a good video time lasp cam needed mate! cheers
