There are BBC interviews with Sarah Michelle Gellar, Amber Benson, and other cast members posted on RU-vid. During Amber's interview, Sarah was sitting next to her, motionless and unblinking. I'm thinking Sarah might have been in character as the deactivated Buffybot trying to throw Amber off. It's really funny in a creepy way.
I've heard that too, especially after having to act out Buffy grieving in the past 2 difficult episodes. she pretty much said it was a nice breather episode to work on.
It's the difference between the kind of human Spike was, and the kind of human Angelus was. Spike was a gentle soul who just wanted to care for his mom and write poetry, while Liam (Angelus) was a womanizing drunk who liked engaging in pub brawls. The lack of a soul does warp Spike's perception of love, though. You're right about that. However, the human that he was before his soul was ripped from him does influence the kind of person he still is.
Also remember when Spike and Dru raised The Judge back in S2, The Judge tried to burn Angelus and couldn't because he was "clean", there was no humanity in him, but Spike and Dru could've been burned because they shared affection and jealousy. Not all vampires are pure inhuman evil.
@eppileFadiemlAI mean that doesn’t make sense because Angelus was in a human body with human memories too. Angelus is definitely meant to be objectively more evil than Spike or Dru.
@eppileFadiemlA The Judge could only burn beings with humanity, and he burned that one nerdy vampire with the glasses, so it's possible for vampires to actually _have_ humanity.
This is the episode where I thought there was more going on with Spike than just the chip. The chip just keeps him from physically harming another living creature. But he also showed affection for Dawn and Joyce; sorrow for the loss of Joyce and he took a major beat down from Glory to protect Dawn. The chip had nothing to do with those things. The chip would not have changed his character to this extent; I believe there has to be something else going on. No "true" vampire could resist sowing hatred and fear. Spike still has that capability but choses not to. He is exercising free will and that's a component of being human.
One thing the show tells us is that even though the demon takes over, a few parts of who you were remain. And spike was a romantic at his core. Let's not forget the first thing he did as a vampire (wich I won't speak here cause it's not this season). He is a very sensitive guy
@eppileFadiemlA I would only argue with not caring about dawn, I think he doesn't care for any of the scoobies, but he does have a weak spot for the summers as a whole
I think the chip didn’t change Spike per se but the presence of the chip allowed Spike to spend much more time with Buffy, Joyce and the Scoobies than he would have ever been able to without the chip. And this exposure to (good) humanity has influenced him, even as a soulless vampire. Think about it, how many other soulless vamps have had that much exposure to humans? None, I’m willing to guess. Spike’s our test sample of one but I believe this exposure has changed him and given him a stronger sense of right and wrong.
No men wrote this episode, it was the great and delightful Jane Espenson! 😁 The Buffybot is brilliant in a number of ways, but most fascinating to me is the way we're able to explore Spikes actual feelings/desires for Buffy, not just wanting her for sex, but wanting non-antagonisitc dialogs with her as well. Spike treats the bot gently and sweetly. The episode is meant to be a bit of a moral compass for him, where by the end, Buffy admonishes the behavior of creating a bot in her likeness, and encourages the good behavior of selflessly protecting her and Dawn. All with comedy mixed in 😁
No wonder every single spike scene was horrible. It's a woman's dream to have a handsome man, who's done a lot of evil, Be turned around by a good woman😂😂😂😂😂
@@WillsonT011 ew ew ew ew ew, we have a red piller/manosphere dbag pitifully trying to psychoanalyze women with broad-brush statements that degrade their opinion on something, yuck 🤢 no thanks, bye bye 👋
Just imagine if Angelus got a chip, he'd never, ever in a million years help Buffy or her friends, let alone fall in love and protect her. If Angelus was chipped, he'd find a way to have everyone killed somehow, like hire a killer or burn their homes down etc.
thats what annoys me the most with their constant Spike hate or annoyance. The fact that he is able to help them and have these deep emotional feelings while still having a demon inside him is far more impressive than Angel and his soul
@jp3813 yes. Well show affection at this point. But I'm in firm belief that this is possibly where buffy actually fell for him because nothing was ever the same between them after this. She may not have known it at the time but she was compelled to kiss him here, you don't see her thank her platonic friends with a kiss on the lips. Not ever.
@@jp3813 the fact she kissed him after like a few hours after realising he made the sex bot says it all though, doesn't it. Its sure not the action of someone who is repulsed by a someone and wishes to expel them from their life.
one of the things i love about spike is that even as a vampire as someone who shouldn't care he does anyway. What he did was a completely selfless act. Glory would show no hesitation to kill him once he wasn't useful anymore, or worse kept him around to get out her aggression and rage. He knew that, knew it would probably be better if buffy didn't come for him at all. Why he was thinking of his own way out and he still didn't say anything about Dawn. Despite the absolute creepiness of the robot and his behavior towards Buffy, you can tell deep down he does have genuine feelings for her. Though corrupted by the demon side and twisted. But they are there.
The Cruciamentum is the trial your referring to. It was given to slayers if they reach the age of 18 to "test" if the slayer was capable of outwitting and defeating their enemies without the aid of their powers. Many speculate the true reasoning behind this test might be to insure the slayer does not live past a certain age where the Council is less able to exert any control or authority over them.
Yeah, Spidey is right, don't read any comics before you've seen the whole show! Especially the ones called "Season 8, 9, 10, 11, 12" - they're canonical continuations of the show. 😉
The thing with Spike reminds me of a quote from Lisa Simpson to Bart at one point (back when the show was good), "there are some cultures that believe that nobody is actually born with a soul. They have to earn one through strife and prayer. Much like you did." When turned, vampires are set back to square one on their moral compass and have to relearn everything (which most don't) about that moral compass. Much like the quote, "There's nothing more dangerous than a grown child. Even more, a grown child with the power of life and death over you."
You guys need to remember that the slayer line is with Faith. Buffy died already to call Kendra. Then Kendra died which called Faith. The next slayer will only be called when Faith dies. Buffy's previous death already used up it's one slayer call. Her dying will not call another slayer.
As has been pointed out already, Faith is the continuation of the slayer line. A slayer was already called after Buffy's death, so her death would not cause another slayer to rise (otherwise the Watcher's Council would probably just kill slayers and revive them until they had a slayer army).
I have always found Spike a more evolved character than Angel, for reasons Ill go into once you finish the show. But Spike is capable of good. I think Rinna said it perfectly. Spike was always an emotional human. Harmony is pretty much the same as when she was human. Who you were as a human effects how you are as a vampire. Spike isn't doing this stuff because of the chip, he does it because he loves Buffy. Buffy: You can't love without a soul Drusilla: Oh we can you know, we can love quite well. if not wisely"
@@chrisallen19821982 how? everything spike done from s5 onwards was to get in buffys pants. Angel spent about 4 seasons not even mentioning her and fighting for the greater good..
I totally disagree, the stuff he does that don't involve Buffy show he cares for people. Like bringing flowers for Joyce, or helping Dawn bring Joyce back. He didn't want Buffy to know, he did that because Joyce was his friend and he wanted to make Dawn and Buffy happy, he didn't need affirmations from it. Or not telling Glory about Dawn. He is a much more complex character than most vampires@eppileFadiemlA
Spike can be in love soullessly, but even with William's memories, it will be obsessive, selfish, and unwise. Drusilla states this in _Crush,_ and in _Surprise_ The Jude says Spike and Dru share affection for one another and wanted to burn them. Not all soulless creatures act like Angelus. The Mayor was a family man, but he was still using Faith. Spike may love Buffy, but he is still obsessive, selfish, and it is unwise for him to do so. The last scene in this episode doesn't mean Spike really learned anything from fucking the Buffybot. It means he hopes helping Buffy and Dawn will earn him back lost points. He loves them. There is no doubt in that. But it will always be twinged in soullessness. It isn't a coincidence that he is willing for a tumble with who he thinks is the Buffybot once bones are "mended," or asks Buffy about the robot after she kissed him, or that he isn't still obsessing and hoping he still now has a chance after the kiss, despite the fact that Buffy was doing so as a thank you. I love the character of Spike and am even a Spuffy shipper, but I also don't kid myself. This is what allows the character to work and have Spike be the enigma he is. I like the fact that Buffy is genuinely grateful to Spike, but stays in the chastisment area when he tries to mention the robot. The Scoobies were so adamant that April was a robot, but couldn't pick up the exact same signs from the Buffybot. The excuse of Buffy acting off because of her mom could work if the group hadn't been so _it's so obvious about April that anyone who doesn't know are dumb._ They put themselves in the dumb position by not seeing it. Buffy had a right to be upset they couldn't see it. I never liked the title of this episode. Interventions on this show are always the Scoobies chastizing Buffy for what they don't like whether it's actually wrong or not. And considering the intervention is about them doing so for what the bot does and get solved pretty quickly (another reason I think Buffy has the right to be upset they couldn't tell her apart from a robot), the title just seems off. The Normies cut out Xander and Anya trying to justify the fact that they were on their way to make sure Spike didn't talk when they were really more worried about Buffy having sex with what they should have known was the Buffybot. I loved The Normies laughing at the Buffybot saying Giles' name the way they used to. RIP Bob Barker. Outside of the _Price is Right_ he will always be remembered by Buffy fans for a thirty second conversation between Spike, Glory and her minions. Spike with a chip is just a vampire on a leash or in a cage. It's not more impressive when he does good because he's not doing so because he is good. I think the only demons to this point in the series who wouldn't get burned by The Judge are Angelus and The Master. Poor Spidey for unintentionally spoiling himself.
@eppileFadiemlA they literally said faith’s in jail so they didn’t forget. a lot of reactors theorise about another slayer if buffy were to die again, chill
This episode is hilarious and after the two very sad Joyce episodes they knew we needed a comedic one. The Buffybot seemed gross at first and ended up great.
That final scene with Spike and Buffy. Spike may be Soulless but he still has emotions. He Enjoyed Joyce's company, he Vowed to protect Little Bit (Dawn), and he has had an Obsession with Buffy.
Spike: It's that guy from that TV show... the prize show... where they guess what stuff cost? Minions: Bob Barker! We will bring you Bob Barker! We will bring you the limp and beaten body of Bob Barker! 🤣🤣🤣 It's such a warped statement, but I remember laughing really hard at that Bob Barker comment the first time I saw this episode. Such a random option to go with, but so funny. And though Spike's robot purchase was totally gross, I do love how he baits Glory into kicking him right out of his chains. "The god of what? Bad home perms?" Oooooooh, burn! She looked particularly ticked off at being called a whorish fashion victim with a lopsided ass. 😆🤣
The thing with Spike is that with no soul he does things for himself. Because his demon was spawned in William he has a poet's perception of the world. Spike uses that perception to manipulate people for his own goals and those goals are always amoral. He can still like people, love people, and it can look a lot like selflessness but it's not.
You really feel Tara's part of the group rather than just an extension of Willow when she actually disagrees with Willow about Buffy's sanity when they learn she's 'boinking' Spike. Hell certainly exists in the Buffyverse, Angel was sent there at the end of Season Two although he was pulled out again. Presumably heaven must exist, too. Buffy has already died and caused another Slayer to be called. I she dies again it will not call another Slayer, Faith would have to die to call another. The council don't care about individual slayers they would have killed and revived a Slayer repeatedly before, if that created more Slayers.
I agree with Marketa's consent argument about sexbots/deepfakes. We definitely need to figure out what to do for dead celebrities to regulate their likenesses.
31:55 If Buffy dies again, it wouldn't give rise to another new slayer. Buffy's death already gave rise to a new slayer, it can't again. In the thousands of years of slayers, Buffy's death could not possibly be the first time a slayer died temporarily, yet we still only have 1 slayer at a time. If a slayer could die multiple times, and give rise to a new slayer each time, then it would permanently increase the number of slayers in the world for every extra death. So, it's only the most recent slayer's death that gives rise to a new slayer.
This is one of the best episodes of this entire show. Absolutely. Spike came up with robot idea and they made him fully pay for that. But then he got a reward for his sacrifice. I like that he did it for her. Glory could have killed him, the gang might not have known where he was even. Anything could have happened. And he still did it for her. This is beautiful. And this represents the idea that you can learn how to be human. You learn through life what is good and what's bad. And make a choice. And this is absolutely not like some simple status 'Oh, so you have a 'soul', then you are good'. This doesn't work like that. I wish they would develop this idea. But unfortunately it was only about 'have a soul/don't have a soul'. By the way it doesn't matter that much for me that she is a robot here when I watch it. I know it but I still see them providing a good quality scenes, all her references are hilarious and they still have this chemistry and fire that made me like them. So that's what is important to me.
lol, the Kim Bauer cougar storyline that Suraj referenced (in the full reaction on Patreon) was indeed one of the dumbest things 24 ever did. And that show did a lot of stupid stuff. It was spectacularly action-packed, though. Season 5 remains one of the most riveting seasons of television: high stakes, political intrigue, and action, action, action.
@@sagaofsarahrose - Oh for sure. She was amazing from the very first scene to the last. Great actress. In general I love a good "they actually weren't crazy at all!" storyline. It's why that Azkaban scene where Harry slowly gets convinced Scabbers is Pettigrew is one of my favourites in the Harry Potter series. The truth is mental sometimes, and books, films and television are the perfect vehicles to get people to become more open-minded about considering the previously unthinkable.
Being a spike fan is only uncomfortable because people tend to forget that hes actually evil the thing is hes not actually as evil as angelous or everyone else he has a sense of loyalty and even tho its warped he in his own way does actually care for buffy and her family he just dosnt know how to be fully good being a soulless vampire
Just remember, Spike has no soul. He has no moral compass, no right or wrong, just feelings and emotions, unfiltered by ethics or morality. The fact he is even capable of feeling love, even a bit warped an twisted, and certainly creepily expressed, form of it is whats remarkable, but he has no idea how to express it normally due to lacking a soul.is it a reaction to the chip? maybe. but spike has always been smarter and certainly more empathetic than any other vampire, and often more than the humans on this show.
The Slayer line isn't as complicated as we make it. Buffy died for a few minutes, Kendra was called then she died and Faith was called. I'm surprised that Faith's coma didn't cause her to die for a few minutes like Buffy and another slayer was called afterwards.
Hahaha finally it came round full circle. I commented this in series 1 ep 1 reaction 😂 ‘Giles’ spike didn’t bother to put my name In properly .😂 cheers still for the reactions. Nice one guys
Wake up feeling like shit then my one smile of the day: "Bob Barker? We will bring you Bob Barker!" If he fights like he did in happy Gilmore he would have fucked up Glories little jawa hobbits
I always thought, since they are supposed to do this ritual and stay a while, that they dressed like that because the night was about to come, and the temperatures would drop a lot. I may be wrong, it was an assumption after all, but doesn't the temperature in deserts can drop considerably at night ?
Buffy had been the longest living slayer at that point yes - mostly because other slayers didn’t have a Giles, Willow, Xander, Cordelia, Angel, Anya, Spike, Oz, Tara or Dawn to keep them alive lol
Chipped Spike is in a weird in between category in that conditional learning from the chip makes him act goodish sometimes but doesn't change who he is on a fundamental level.
Spike the hopeless romantic demon. He never knew actual love and his vampire self is constantly trying to emulate what he thinks it's like. Sometimes he gets it right and sometimes he gets it very wrong. But it always comes from a demon's perspective. This is a fundamental part so many forget because his character is so likeable. What he actually did as a vampire in the past is still far worse than anything shown in the show.
28:28 Actually, if you look at all the evidence, it is pretty obvious. If you're too lazy to look it up, evidence such as dreams of past lives, people becoming their past selves after a head injury, knowing certain things that they wouldn't know unless they were that person from a past life, and birthmarks that correlate with injuries that their past lives succumbed to.
Well, if you folks follow through with your latest marketing scheme, at least there wouldn't be any consent issues. It has the makings of an interesting trial, though. "Yes, but I withdrew my consent."
The question of the deepfakes and creating your own AI porn based on real people is actually a real hot topic in ethics debate circles at the moment. I think it fundamentally comes down to whether it is being distributed or entirely for personal use.
@21:18 Mickey better shut up the gov gonna make him disappear too. next weeks reaction Mickey will be missing and the rest of the crew gonna be acting like he never existed.
EXCUSE ME EDITOR,, 😅 When Suraj said, "Who needs an intervention?" And you cut to The Gang saying their name, starting with Marketa, did you do that on purpose?😂😂❤if so that was funny
This epi kinda truly begins why Spike/Buffy pairing is crap. I cant wait to see going forward who out of the normies ship them and who will never. Of course there is a particular epi in season 6 that should destroy shipping for these two by any sensible individual.
Nahh, I'm really looking forward to seeing how certain views change from here on out. I feel from the body we just get bangers non stop till a future episode (not saying to avoid any spoiler type tings) but yeah, spike says himself previously, he may not have a soul but doesn't mean they don't love passionately. Guess in buffy, vamps are more seen as sociopaths
Personally I just want all of the Normies to vote on the butthole chocolate on air (especially Chis) because the debate will be hilarious. Keep in mind I'm not buying anyone's chocolate ass, but this little discussion prompted a funny discussion with my friends we have a bet to see how many would be down with it. However if you do face molds I may spend some money on that 🖖😎👍
Riley left because he talked to everyone _but_ you about hus issues, Buffy. And no one (looking at _you_, Xander) whi supposedly saw this coming, spoke to you about it. Angelus and Spike are opposite ends if a spectrum. Spike was an emotional, passionate man and became an emotional passionate vampire. Liam was a self-centered man and became the most vicious creature the Master ever met. People like to compare Spike and Angel to Spike's detriment but they're always comparing Spike without a soul to Angel with. Apples to apples is entirely different.
