Breed in Focus - The Californian Guinea Pig 

I just love looking at them. Guinea pigs are so unbelievably cute and sweet and intelligent and patient. One of God's perfect creations.

I considered a pet rodent and watched many RU-vid videos about their care. I was a kid in the 1970s, and It’s great to see how most people care for their pet rodents now. Such a pleasant change from metal chicken wire bottoms. In choosing which species of pet rodent I wanted, I narrowed it down to rats or Guinea pigs. I’m left at a standstill now and can’t decide. Rats are more intelligent and affectionate like a dog but can’t be kept in an open enclosure like how Guinea pigs can be kept in. Rats are so intelligent, but so much so that they are great escape artists. Also, Rats only live for about two years and that seems a tad too short, especially since they need to be kept in groups, and when introducing new rats to replace one that has past away, if you want a baby or younger rat, you need to introduce two of them together so they will have a companion in their same age group while adjusting to being included to a new home with older piggies. So even though they have short life spans, keeping them as a group turns into an almost endless cycle of commitment. Guinea pigs on the other hand can be kept in an a more open enclosure, and live longer (3-4 years), but seem skittish and like little mindless eating machines. I can’t decide because I want my favorite parts of both rats and Guinea pigs rolled into one but the aspects I like about one, the other doesn’t have. Until I decide, I’ll just keep watching more neat RU-vid videos.

i'm very new to this, and i feel your channel is soooo informative and helpful! and i'd like to ask if it's possible to find the rex cavy breeders talk about the breeds ?

New guinea pig fan here. Is it me, or the face of Californians (and some Teddy) are much flatter i.e. shorter and rounder snout? Or is it just fluffy hair? I ask coz I like them more than the common guinea pigs :)

My california is crested head. Is purebred?

Mine both parents califonia ,already 3 month until now one of the baby still no black marking appear ,what is the problem ya?

My wife and I are having trouble finding a Californian breeder in out state in the US. What should I do to find one near me?

I have two Californian! And my white one is slowly losing his black nose patch. He is now soon to be 5 months old and his black nose patch is almost white now. Lol😂 can you help me understand what’s going on? He used to have such dark black nose patch when I first got him (2 months). Haha

My 18 month old sheltie has just lost his friend and I am looking for a nice little boy to put in with him, I love the californian but am open to any breed just to find a friend, any help you can give will be much appreciated.
