Our video deals with one of our favorite chicken breeds, the Barred Plymouth Rock. If you're a beginner, or you want to add to your flock, this is an excellent breed! Very friendly, hearty and tolerant of hot and cold weather.
One thing that I failed to add to the video was their weight. The males reach about 7.5 pounds while the females weigh in around 6.5 pounds.
Please like our video and subscribe! Thanks for watching!

I have a Plymouth rooster. He’s very protective over his hens. He will attack 5 out of 10 times when I enter the coop. A little swat back at him and he runs away….nothing serious. Love him!!!

Had one in the past, that would hear my car coming, and rush to greet me in the driveway. Nice birds, I got chicks, again, so, trying again for the first time in 10 years. The thing about "free range", is if you ever get a fox, he does not stop till he gets them all. Everything loves chicken, and spends their life trying to get your chickens. Eventually you will get outsmarted, unless you lock them in a coop with a run.

Really enjoy your chicken video's. Barred Rocks are great. You mentioned to me once that you purchase your chicks from Hoover's in Iowa. They do have quality stock. In their catalog they mention that Barred Rocks and Partridge Rocks rarely go broody. That might be why yours have not been broody. I love Orpingtons...just don't like the broodiness unless that trait has been bred out of them. I notice on your other videos you have Isa Browns and Calico Princess and Black Sex Link. Look like great birds. Curious on the partridge rocks. Hopefully when I get my place in the country I can get some of those. Thanks again for the wonderful videos. I have farm experience so I am familiar with poultry and other livestock. Take care.

It has been fun watching the new breeds grow this season. The only hens who have started laying are the Sapphire Splash. The others aren't far behind. I have no experience with Partridge Rocks. How do the do in a garden? Do the eat the plants or just the bugs? Do we need to fence off the plants with these chickens?
@TheOldSwedesFarm
@TheOldSwedesFarm Год назад
You have to fence off any vegetation you don't want them eating! We only let them in the garden when the garden is done for the year. Otherwise, they'd dig it all up and eat everything. Chickens and gardens don't mix well!
@Cicada-Screams
@Cicada-Screams 8 месяцев назад
We got some from a coworker and they dont eat anything but grass, leaves, and ground corn. The guy we got them from only feed them ground corn. They completely ignore bread, bugs, spaghetti, and pumpkin guts. I have had some little successes with wild bird seed mix. Never had a breed of chicken that didn't love the things they ignore. Any advice?
@TheOldSwedesFarm
@TheOldSwedesFarm 8 месяцев назад
If they were my layer hens, I'd want to get them to like Layer Feed so they are getting the nutrients they need. I'd mix corn in a bowl and t]le them eat. I'd then add more and more layer feed with the corn. That will slowly eliminate the corn, except as a real treat. The corn is not good for them in the summer as it raises their internal temperature. See if you can get them moved over to layer feed. They can still have grass and other things but the main food should be layer feed.

How tall are adult hens? I’ve got 3 chicks coming next week - will be building a coop and run …I was planning on making a 4x4x4 sized coop with a 4x8 run attached (as well as 2ft underneath the coop… so 4x12 run) … and they would have access to fenced 1/2 acre backyard … wanted to know if 3 foot tall would be enough instead of 4ft for the coop? … maybe get 3 more in the future
@TheOldSwedesFarm
@TheOldSwedesFarm 2 года назад
My personal opinion is to open up as much space as possible. If you crowd them, they will pick on each other more. Give them room. Our "small" coop is 8' x 8' x 4' tall. The run is 14' x 18'. I've got a video on the coop. Our pole barn is larger. I'd do the 4' x 4' x 4' for the three girls. I'd hate to have them peck on each other as it might cut into laying production. Let me know if this answers your questions. Cheers!

Flat is the way to go. The hens sit with three points of contact - their breastbone and two feet. They can't do that when the 2x4 is vertical. @@mochimama Check and see what you can get ASAP. If none is available, they will need more calcium (for their egg shells). I didn't realize you were in Hawaii. We were on Oahu last January and really enjoyed watching all the chickens run around. They're not the fluffy butt chickens like we have here! No need for all that insulation in Hawaii! Aloha Lynn!

@@TheOldSwedesFarm Oh no, I'm not in Hawaii (I was born & raised in Honolulu, more recently lived in Kona but home is now Idaho and I love it here!) I was able to get some organic layer feed at the Winco even though the manager said they didn't carry it. It's in the bulk foods section near pet treats in case anyone in Idaho reads this. So my girls got their 50/50 mix this afternoon. Wish me luck for eggs soon! btw, Do you give your chickens oyster shell supplements for the calcium, or grind up eggs shells and mix into feed?
@TheOldSwedesFarm
@TheOldSwedesFarm Год назад
@@mochimama I will occasionally drop some crushed oyster shells in the pole barn in the evening. The girls pick them up while they scratch. There really is enough calcium in the Purina Layer Feed that we use. I use this "just in case." So far, we've had very nice shells. Cheers Lynn!

If they don't hatch so how do people get thier young chick

We purchase day old chicks when we need new hens. We do not have a rooster, so we don't have fertilized eggs.

We have never had any roosters here. I was at a farm with two Rock roosters and they seemed calm and attentive. Not aggressive at all. I was at a farm with a Rhode Island Red rooster and I feared for my life! Really aggressive! I'm not a lot of help on your question Kim. Sorry!

If you have a hen and a rooster, then you can have eggs to hatch. Without a rooster, the eggs are not fertilized. Since we don't have a rooster, we have unfertilized eggs. If you've got a hen and a rooster, you're good. I hope this helps!

@TheOldSwedesFarm

@@EvangSamuelGodday I have never hatched eggs. If you know they are fertilized, you can use a light to see if the embryo is forming and then put them in an incubator. You might want to check with someone who is more skilled in hatching eggs. I don't want to give you the wrong information.

@@TheOldSwedesFarm Im slightly worried about noise. I have 7ish acres of land so not that much space, I dont know if i want a rooster waking up the neighborhood either. Seems like a difficult balance to achieve. I dont know much about the social needs of chickens but ive read that you need a rooster for protection and to ease the anxiety of the hens. Me and my dad love to build stuff and like gardening but chickens may be a lot for us.
@TheOldSwedesFarm
@TheOldSwedesFarm Год назад
@@chroniccomplainer3792 We don't have a rooster. Usually one of the hens takes on the role and will watch for hawks, danger, etc. We've got 60 hens so there are several who have taken on the role. Seven acres is plenty of space. We've got 60 hens on 3+ acres. They free range all day! Our neighbor (quarter mile away) has a rooster and I can hear it occasionally. If you don't really need a rooster, just have hens!

We get all our chicks from Hoover's Hatchery in Iowa. You should contact them and see if they will ship to you. If they won't (or can't), they might know who could ship to you. Good luck!
