We have 5-6wk old Sapphire Gem girlies, live in Southern MN. They already have great and distinctive personalities and are just hilarious. Our twins plan to show them at the SCFF through 4H. Thank you so much for this and other videos you have on these adorable hens.

My S/O wanted chickens. I was totally against it. I toldhim if I have to feed and care for them I have to like what I'm looking at. I picked out our birds as days old chicks. We got 4 Sapphire Gems, 2 Barred Rocks and 2 Easter Eggers. My Gem girls are the first to lay. I love what they look like and I like their attitudes. I cannot let my birds free range be cause we are surrounded with hawks, owls and kites. The last batch of hens he had all got carried off, one at a time. I like my birds and want them protected. These eggs are better than anything I ever bought at the grocery. We live in Florida and these birds have done very well in our extreme summer heat!

We have never had the Easter Eggers but we know you'll love the Gems and Rocks. Great layers and good hens! It's too bad you have so many predators and they can't free range. At least they've got a great, loving home! We love the eggs from our hens. They are so tasty! Enjoy all the eggs. Your Rocks should start laying any day now. Keep us posted! Cheers!

How or when do you allow them to roam and do you ever lose any? We have a large fenced area and the neighbor has ducks wild ducks he feeds and some waddling ones so I was thinking since he has them my chickens should be able to wander also.
@TheOldSwedesFarm
@TheOldSwedesFarm 2 года назад
@@organixgirl We keep the girls in a smaller fenced area outside from the time they have feathers until they are about three months old. Once they are similar size to the older chickens, they are allowed to roam on our entire property. We have lost one to a feral cat, one to a hawk and one ran away. That's not bad for the 60 we've had over the past two years. If you've got a fenced area, and no older chickens, they could probably roam from the time they are fully feathered. Just make sure you can watch for hawks, neighborhood cats, etc. The girls will love to forage!

I have one left that looks identical to the one in the video. She is one tough ole gal. She has survived a raccoon attack that took a rooster, and four hens. Her comb was ripped halfway down and she was bloodied, and laying in the coop when I found her. She was almost dead. I took her to the steam beside the coop, and hand fed her water. She perked up enough to walk off under her own power in about 10 minutes.

We have a four-foot fence around our garden. The corners of the garden are supported with wood posts and supports. None of the hens likes to land on fencing. They will land on the wood supports and get in the garden. It was only the Gems that would do it. If you can fence in an area with fencing and t-posts, you should have better luck. If you watch a garden video of ours, you should be able to see the supports I'm talking about. Hope this helps. If you've got other questions, just let me know. Cheers Barb!

We do not have any of them vaccinated. They are sprayed so they don't get sick when they eat poo as they grow. So far we've only had the one die of Mareks. We've had everything cleaned and we keep the stress down. It had to be stress related. We keep everything cleaned just to keep the dust, dirt, etc. down. Enjoy the Gems.

@@jamiescountryliving I have seen them at Tractor Supply too. One complaint that I have heard is that they are not great at sexing the chickens. If you're looking for hens, you might get a rooster! Be careful!

Are these the same as “blue Plymouth rocks”? If I heard right it’s half a blue Plymouth Rock and half regular barred rock that you have there. We’re getting blue Plymouth rocks and hope they are nice as your birds

Hey guys!! So what do you think over all for a egg layer that's also a good meat chicken?
@TheOldSwedesFarm
@TheOldSwedesFarm 2 года назад
We have bought all our birds based on egg production. They consider all our girls dual purpose but none of our breeds really have a large breast for meat. When it comes time to retire some of the girls, I think they will be more "stock pot" chickens versus roasters. Hope that helps.

It's very strange how someones experience with the same breed can be so polar opposite. 3 out of 4 of my Sapphire Gems are not just bullies, but psychopaths. They don't just do the territory run of thing or fain peck if a lower bird gets too close, they jump on backs, go after necks, corner and mentally torture my Easter eggers relentlessly, chasing them for no reason, and keep them away from food and water. They often do this in pairs like a gang. They can be across the 500 sq ft run and will seek out another bird to bully! What's worse is they lay small eggs. Smaller than a small you would find in a store. I think I got a batch that were crossed with bantams at one point in their line - and perhaps a rooster with a seriously bad disposition.

It is interesting that yours are so different. We do not have any roosters so maybe that plays into it. Ours took forever to molt. I think it was about six weeks. They also are laying smaller eggs. I will not get this breed again due to egg size. Thanks for sharing your experience. Sorry it hasn't been good with your Gems. Cheers!

Wow that is different. My hens are sweet. But the rooster is horrible and is headed to the freezer. He even jumps at the run if you walk by it. Mine also lay large to x large brown eggs. I always have trouble fitting them in cartons. Im sorry you had such a bad experience with them.

We do not breed them and I am not sure of the rules for sending internationally. Check with a breeder in the US (Hoover's Hatchery) and see if they can send internationally.

Do you actually breed them yourself? Do you have pictures or videos of chicks and adult birds you've crossed? Just curious because I've read and heard several different breeds that are made to make those crosses.
@TheOldSwedesFarm
@TheOldSwedesFarm 5 месяцев назад
@@amberemma6136 We do not breed any chickens ourselves. No roosters here. We buy our chicks as day-old chicks. I don't want any barnyard mixes and want to have pure hens that we can guarantee. We buy everything from Hoover's Hatchery in Iowa. They've provided real quality chicks so far.

You must not have many things around that would kill them. I have raccoon, possum, hawks and owls. I have to keep them in a wire covered pen. I wish they could walk around and eat bugs and grass ect.
@TheOldSwedesFarm
@TheOldSwedesFarm Год назад
We have hawks, eagles, owls, racoons, skunks, fox, coyotes, feral cats & cars. I bet, over three years, we've lost one to each (two to cats). We buy more chicks than we need, knowing some will die. Some also are lost to disease, accidents (jumping out of trees), etc. They have safe spaces to get under if a hawk flies over and most of the other predators are at night. The gain of free ranging outweighs the losses. Just our opinion.
