Here is the second video in the progress of breeding guppies, starting with a small group of 4 females and 1 male, with a goal to understand how to fix a single-color trait and strain.
Using a single all-white phenotype male (platinum White/snow white/white moscow strain), can we restore this trait through generations with females without this trait? In this second cross with female two, all the offspring were grey-based. All had red tails and the males had a lighter body color with an almost metallic sheen.

You’re correct the dark shaded body in females is characterize as a dark lower half but if it shows up in males, it becomes a tuxedo pattern

Agreed. This seems pretty consistent now.

Ivan: I am pretty positive by looking at this female and the results of the males from the cross that this female is what is called a "Dumbo ear mosaic guppy. If you check out these guppies you will see that the males and the females look very similar to these type of guppies.

I had to think about this but you might be right. I’d expect the big ears would have been more prominent on the males though. It looks like an X linked trait.

I agree, I've bred Mosaic DE for a couple of years. They do look similar.

happy days Ivan. this is a great series in many ways. thanks for the thorough series and the vids. i told people that i was setting a hot male with three different virgin females to try to set traits and or make an interesting new strain. all told me not to waste my time. ahahahahaha. well, into the second generation now, and glad for the learning and process. especially seeing your vids which are very clear helpful and encouraging.

Thanks and Im glad you are enjoying the series! I think peoples opinions on recreating or finding a new strain with crossbreeding depends on an individuals goals. If selling a pure strain to make a profit, it makes sense that crossing might be a waste of time. It takes several tank spaces, lots of resources and a fixed strain wont show up until at least a year if not more. All that time could be spent breeding a true strain and improving that line while still being able to sell them at top dollar. So I get it. However, if that pressure is not there, I think it could be a great use of time. With careful selection and a set goal, I think a lot can be gained and learned. All those skills can then be applied to either creating a new strain, or thoroughly maintaining an existing one by understanding how those genes interact. Best of luck to you! Id be excited to see how your guppies start looking!

You mentioned the term "back crossing", correct me if i'm wrong but does that mean inbreeding like sister/brother, daughter/father, son/mother?
@IvansGuppies
@IvansGuppies 8 месяцев назад
Yes. In this case, it would be father/daughter. Its a technique that can be used to fix traits. The technique we see used most often is sister/brother. If you've seen the notation F1, F2, F3, etc before, that's what it refers to. Each subsequent generation is a sister/brother cross. For backcrosses, the notation would be BC1, BC2, etc instead. Hope that helps

This is fascinating as it's completely reversed and different for birds. Roosters are ZZ while hens are ZW. Line breeding is preferred and encouraged between parent and child, but inbreeding between siblings from the same generation is discouraged as it wastes time - doesn't isolate the traits we're looking for.

Thats interesting. I didnt know this about birds.

Pet store fish dont have good genetics to start with. Mircaiffs in particular

You are absolutely right and I agree. It is truly unfortunate that pet store fish tend to have poor genetics.
