There are several ways to look at the history of Breguet watches and knowing something about that history will aid in your purchasing decisions, and looking at different models will provide you with some kind of guide to what you can afford.

The discontinued Marine 5817 is far more aesthetically pleasing than the new Marine. The big date at 6 is well-balanced. Hope they bring it back.

@watchartsci 8 месяцев назад
Unfortunately, most of those reasonably priced are 32-36mm, and the 39mm start at around $8,500, Dsvillalva. Who knows maybe if they came back in steel, the price would be more reasonable, perhaps. Take care, Bill

I remember being thoroughly convinced on buying a Breguet 3317 perpetual calendar, and flew to a reputable store where it was being sold used at a great price. Upon trying it on, I remember being disappointed because of the gap between the lugs holding the strap and the edge of the case. On paper it was the watch to end all watches, but once I tried it on, it just didn’t work. I instead purchased a patek 5146j that although I hated how it looked in pictures beforehand (too boring, was my take), once I tried it on, they really are amazingly effective at presenting a lot of data in an uncluttered way, which (for me) made it easier to read, and thus was a more sensible choice for me. However, I now have the Breguet bug again, and want a calendar with power reserve of some sort, which is hard to find. Cheers! Always enjoy your take on things!

Bill, I have 3 Brequet watches. My favorite is the tradition 7097BR. It looks better in person. Love the repeater. I also have the Classique 5327 BA. Love the idea of a perpetual watch. The dials are hard to read. The last Brequet I have is the XXI 3810 BR. Good value for the money. Very nice watch. The Tradition 7097BR by far is my favorite.

Bill, Breguet has been a watch brand I've lusted after for a very long time. But like you, I'm not a fan of silicon. Thanks for all the work that went into this video. I've found that the older models I really like are simply too small for my wrist. I really love the tradition, particularly the one you found with the silver backing (most I've found are gold), but 37mm is just a touch too small. I do like the type XX but it is a cam actuated chronograph, not column wheel. The watch snob in me can't abide that :). Take care!
@watchartsci
@watchartsci 8 месяцев назад
Not being a chronograph fan at all, I would still not be too hasty to dismiss cam actuated chronos altogether. Check this out, Paul : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-33W6u_62A7k.htmlsi=ti6CwoxGjQUlL5Ez . Not selling the cam mechanism, and my one chrono (Bovet MonoRattrapante) is a column wheel Valjoux Chronograph ... but, cam-activated ones are not all that terrible and have some small advantages. But what do I know? I don't even like chronographs. 🤫 Take care, Bill

Hi Bill, looking at the two options I think I’d go for the older model every time based on aesthetics. The real story here is that you can buy a Breguet under £10k. I’m not complaining but part of me wants to see the brand go higher up market, mixing with the best independents and holy trinity. That’s what the name and all the history deserves. Regards, Ed
@watchartsci
@watchartsci 8 месяцев назад
I'd like to see Breguet be a special brand for Swatch, Ed, but for them it seems to be all about making money. However, going back not too many years with Breguet, you can find some incredible horology-namely those Classiques by Daniel Roth from the 70s and 80s. Take care, Bill

Beauties, all! I'd happily add a Classique and Tradition to the box, but for now I have the last gen Marine. A beautiful, robust watch that can dress up or down and always bears close examination of the dial. The FP movement isn't exactly 'in-house,' but you can't have everything and I'm a big fan of FP movements in Blancpain. My main issue with Breguet isn't the silicon, it's the almost ubiquitous use of automatics - fine in a sport watch like the Marine, but I'm not a fan in dress watches like that sublime enamel dial Classique and many Traditions.
@watchartsci
@watchartsci 8 месяцев назад
James, I'd rather have a FP movement than most in-house ones, and I've come to really like the Marine. Does your's have a leather or rubber strap? Take care, Bill
@jameshoward9700
@jameshoward9700 8 месяцев назад
I absolutely agree! I'd take the Tradition's DR movement though. My Marine is the black dial on rubber. The rubber strap is very nice, though the friction deployment is a stiff little sucker! Also worth noting, I think the screwed bars are not standard thickness (as per Blancpain FF) and the time legibility is not the best. But character, comfort, waterproofing, robustness, big date and beauty - all day long! Best, J@@watchartsci

Hi Bill , Love your show. I have a Breguet Marine Royale white 18k. The watch is such a beautiful work of art, plus a 300m diving complication with a tough Breguet 519 R movement ( Blancpain 1240 family ) . To me this watch has it all , is uncommon and unique. Pray I don't scratch it !!
@watchartsci

Don, don't worry about scratching it-it's white gold! I have 3 watches with wg cases and they get treated like all the others. Taking care is one thing, but if I worried about them, I wouldn't wear them and enjoy them as much as I do. I really like the model you have! Take care, Bill

Hey Bill! I understand you don't like high hertz watches but I must mention the Classique Chronometrie 7727BR, simply as a mechanical marvel, which runs at 10 Hz! I didn't know mechanical watches can run that fast. Breguet quietly continues to innovate.

I just picked up the Breguet Tradition 7037/BB/11/9V6 in White Gold. This is much rarer than the 7027 because it has the retrograde seconds and an automatic movement compared to the manual in the 7027. It's also a 38mm which wears better on an average sized wrist compared to the 40mm due the long straight lugs.

Funny thing Brian, the 7027 is my favorite too-looks like Abraham Louis Breguet had a hand in it. I can live with 37mm at the lower end-my old VC Overseas was 37mm, and it was fine-loved that watch. I love my Heritage circa 1995 in white gold, To see it next to the modern iteration I feel like I made the right decision! As to me Heritage would mean I'm buying something with design cue's from Breguet's Archives as far back as can be, The newer one seems well just what it is, a bit new. While I have not seen the newer one in person Bill, I can assure you that the neo vintage especially the one I have in white gold is a feast for the eyes. So simple yet complex to the trained eye as you have a silver finished part of the dial consisting of the roman numerals inside of it, Followed but engine turned guilloche and within that sub settings of 1) an applied minute track and then finally an applied sub second track all, So in a nutshell you have a Tonneau case and dial but a set of circular dials as well. If all the above was not enough heritage, Breguet even added a Cabochon on the crown, Time well spent in the archives I'd say! Also it wears perfect as a dress watch on my 7.5inch wrist, I would not appreciate it as much if it wore larger. If I could change one thing about it, would have been the addition of a exhibition case back but I guess heritage wins again! 😄 Take care and see you on the next one! - SI

@watchartsci
@watchartsci 8 месяцев назад
Aleksandar, would it kill Swatch to just let one of their companies have decent hairsprings from transitional metals? They've got GO, Blancpain, Harry Winston, Jaquet Droz and Omega-just let Breguet develop with metal springs ... or even just some special versions of certain models-especially the Tradition and Classique. I do believe the Tradition 7027 is still in production with an adjustable balance spring (not silicon). Have a Classique model with the same spring. Take care, Bill
