The Pocket Rocket. Brent Russell hit the South African rugby scene like a thunder strike in early 2002 when he shone for the Pumas in the Vodacom Cup. He was given an opportunity in the Springbok trials and again impressed with his speed and skill. He was selected in the Springbok group and made his debut against Wales.
He would feature regularly for the Boks between 2002 and 2006, but the feeling has always been that he could have contributed so much more if South African coaches weren't as obsessed with size.
All in all, he scored some fantastic tries during his career and will be fondly remembered for his exploits on the field.
Here is a collection of some of his best tries.
Enjoyed and thanks for watching!

I have watched the Springboks for 30 years. Together with Danie Gerber, Brent Russell was the most exciting and gifted backline player that ever graced our fields that I have seen. It is a tragedy that the South African mindset was too conservative to accept this.
@multiclockwise
@multiclockwise 7 лет назад
His best position was flyhalf. He had electrifying pace over a short distance and a beautiful pass in both directions. Whenever he received the ball at flyhalf, a burst of energy entered the backline and suddenly options opened up everywhere. South African coaches couldn't understand this and totally wasted him at fullback or on the wing. He was a playmaker extraordinaire. Just imagine him at flyhalf with Danie Gerber next to him.

The rugby elite had a thing about size and completely ruined Brents career he should have played many more tests than he did, I watched all his matches he was brilliant.

Thanks for making these videos, haven't been able to stop watching them! Brent Russell could have had an amazing lengthy career. As you saw he played, 10, 11 and 15. Not being able to settle in a position shortened this mans career and I blame the South African coaches/management team. If you look at New Zealand they specialize in each position and become gods in those positions. We need to do that to in South Africa.

I was a huge Brent Russel fan and he was completely wasted because he was "too small". Like so many have said here, he was an absolute play maker and his talents were squandered. Could you image a team with Russel at fly half and Cheslin Kolbe on the wing?
@pietekoo5559
@pietekoo5559 2 года назад
True. I was also so disappointed when he was just left out of the Springbok team. As you stated?, they were looking for battering rams instead of finesse.

The SA coaches' obsession with size definitely hampered his progression, but so did the fact that he was so determined to play flyhalf. Overall, as a flyhalf Russell was decent but not much more. His phenomenal acceleration and sidestep made him extremely dangerous, though, and I suspect he would've had more success internationally in the current era of "specialist" utility backs, because he really was a well-rounded rugby player.

As a New Zealander, I'm loving all these rugby uploads from all the rugby countries - especially from our old foes, the South Africans. It's great seeing some of your heroes from the past. I especially liked the one on Neil Kruger - how the hell didn't he get the Bok jersey?. Thanks to all. We had our own All Black pocket rocket winger in the 70s Grant Batty who was even smaller than Brent Russell. Like Kruger, he was severely hampered by injuries.

Mark Wesley thanks for the comment and the support Mark! Burger was an awesome wing and highly rated, but he had to compete with Ray Mordt for the Springbok no 14 jersey. When Mordt went to league, Burger struggled with injuries and other player like Jaco Reinach and Kobus Burger got a chance. One of the unluckiest players to never play for the Boks

I think Brent Russell would win. He had a faster 100m time (10.5 to Habana 10.7) and they were even stevens over 40m (both around 4.6 seconds).. Funny Brent had a higher top end (I would have thought that would have gone to Habana) . I remember the SA conditioning coach saying only Mentz & Russell came close to matching Nokwe and Chavhanga in terms of raw speed. That speed at 2:50 is "sonic the hedgehog" like.

There was a try scored against Australia, I think by Matfield, where Russell countered from deep in SA territory and was involved in quite a few phases. I think it was a poor showing against NZ at Loftus that cost him his spot.
