he didn't start it by himself but he was a big part of getting that ball rolling. that very start of attitude era, before the actual "attitude" branding started was really a magical time, before it became increasingly silly.
I agree that there's a soothing sound in Bret's voice when he talks. I've met him many times from 1994-2022. I remember being nervous the first time I met Bret and while waiting on line, trying to think of what to say to him. The first impression that I got from Bret was that he exuded this genuineness and warmth. When I shook his hand, I said, "It's nice to meet you, Bret." He responded, "It's nice to meet YOU" with this warmth in his voice and his eyes. I can attest that from then on, Bret never had me feeling nervous or uncomfortable. When I'd show my father photos of myself and Bret(from photo opp/autograph signing events), he'd say that there was something "pleasant" about him.
Well this WAS before he found out that concussion ended up being a career ender so... I think he might have had some more empathy for Steve several months later.
*8:56* Vince: "It was looking into the eyes of a skeleton"--that was typical Vince who couldn't recognize Bret's grieving Owen's death. I was lucky to have followed much of Bret's solo career both on TV and in live events. His matches were so engaging and full of storytelling. To me, the name Bret Hart is synonymous with the word legend.
It’s a lot worse then what you describe. Vince knew he was lying on national Tv. He took a sadistic and sociopathic angle for whatever reason and tried to paint Bret as someone who didn’t care about his brothers death and was focused on his own career. That’s so disturbing it’s incomprehensible.
Skeletons don’t have any eyes which is really a bad analogy for Vince McMahon to use. Now if he had said “it was like looking into the eyes of a dead man” that would’ve been better
Landsberg never subjected Bret to the kind of ribbing he gave to other guests. You can sense the respect he had for Bret and that's because he knew the Hitman was telling the truth from what was said off-camera.
@xZIGGY_STARDUSTx as does a Benoit or malenko, Owen , Eddie, and so on. But Bret stood out above all of these greats. I grew up on Bret. Remember his loss at Wrestlemania 9 so vividly. I think I cried , lol! I'm 38 now. I respect the shit out of Bret. I understand how he is viewed as bitter, and he is. But he has a whole lot of reason to be. He was robbed of the final decade of his career. Look how HBK made his final run. I think Bret was soaked from head to toe, inside out in bitterness , frustration, and anger, and it took him down with the stroke.
@@Mikefantasia22 I love the guy as well but I don't think he's as consumed with hate as you think. For a while he was pissed off at Vince and WWF but with the advent of the internet and social media he's now fully aware that millions of people love him to death and respect his work. The dude was the finest in-ring talent ever to exist and the WWF spin-machine suppressed that fact while downplaying his camera presence, charisma and intelligent mic style for years. Everybody knows Bret was the best and who cares if WWE does an overdramatic celebration of HBK or anybody else while ignoring him? Facts are facts .... he's the best there is, best there was and the best here ever will be.
Vince more or less indirectly admits he's a psycho/sociopath, for not understanding Bret "talking about Bret" when they met regarding Owen's passing. That's how people cope and deal with tragedy and trauma; they bring up past injustices and wrong doings. Bret was literally grieving to Vince in the park that day, and it went right over Vince's head. Zero surprise. The Hitman is the GOAT.
if by some miracle vince sees any criminal punishment, that slimebag trump will just pardon him when he gets back in office. the world is run by mostly psychopaths.
Goldberg had been asked if he was sorry he ended Bret's career and he said the only thing I'm sorry about is the fact that I didn't kill the SOB, great role model, NOT
Truth be told Bret took his profession too seriously. He himself admits, he couldn't see himself continuing after Owen's death? Why not pack it in? Even here he half-heartedly admits now would be better time as ever to retired, but he doesn't want to end on a high note? If Bret didn't have this concussion, then who knows when he was going to hang up his boots?
There was a portion of the crowd that always hated Bret cause they thought he was too stuck up and a whiny baby. It was infuriating since his career was amazing and it ended with so much bs. Bret Hart is the best there was, is and always will be
40 - I don't get how he said that there's only a handful of them left... This interview took place in 2000 - just switch 3 years forward and you have Kurt Angle, Eddie Guerrero, Triple H, Chris Jericho, Shelton Benjamin, Shawn Michaels, Rey Mysterio, still Chris Benoit,...
Fast to forward to 2022 and we now know that Bret and Vince eventually made amends and that Bret ended up doing one final stint in WWE in 2010. Also, Bret is now friends with Shawn Michaels and hates Bill Goldberg. I guess at the time of this interview, Bret hadn't lost everything yet due to that concussion he sustained from wrestling Goldberg so he didn't despise him yet like he does today.
It's true and Goldberg admits he had no idea what he was doing in the ring. Guys too the spear move in the ring and it hurt a lot of ppl. Bret has always contended that the audience members are marks, once wrestler start hurting each other...the art of it is gone and they become the marks. Later on it's also revealed that Goldberg wanted to learn how to wrestle and from Bret. I heard this on one of the Jim Cornett podcast and watched it on TDSTR
His love of money cost him his career. Had he stayed with WWF, he never would have crossed paths with Goldberg. On top of that......the fact that he wanted WCW to give him Hogan money showed how delusional he was. He was never that kind of draw. The truth hurts.
Nothing you said was truthful, you fool. Vince rescinded on the contract he signed with Bret & told him to go to WCW. Bret was a big draw during a recession in the business. He drew huge gates overseas & in North America.
I agree with both of your points on here. Bret Hart was ultimately forced out of the WWF. To me, whenever your boss tells you to go to his competitor, you're done. It's doesn't matter how well you see yourself as a commodity and Bret knew that.
Brett said he’s never gonna work with Vince again and he also said that he doesn’t hold any ill will towards Goldberg!!!!!!!! What a true man of his word bret Harte might be the best technician of all time but he’s also a whiny complaining bitter old man This was 20 years ago and even here he’s a bitter old man
@@carlosfryer3887 he was for a time….he tried passing it off to other new guys (Diesel for example) and they couldnt draw a dime. Certainly once 97/98 came around injuries and age caught up to him for sure
Yea there was that graphic that said where he got his nickname 15:00, it mentioned boxing but wtf Bret was never actually involved in boxing? Landsberg goofed that up lol
I'm sorry as much as I like Brett, I believe Vince on this I mean look at this interview alone and many others Brett did right after Owen's death he was still always just talking about himself for the most part!
I believe Vince on the meeting cause even Bret said when they met it.seemed like the most important thing was Brets pics and career match vids and archives...but then again maybe Bret didn't wanna talk about it cause it would have been to hard
Martha's lawyers had told bret not to say anything about the impending lawsuit. There was essentially nothing he could talk about that Vince wanted out of him
Bret wasn't gagged but he was strongly dissuaded from discussing anything about Owen (he says as much in his book). Martha would've hated him for giving Vince a scrap of a detail on anything to do with Owen and he and she were very close after his death (Bret was the only one who didn't whore himself out to Vince for a payday or special favours at the time). Bret couldn't say FU for killing my brother, so he said FU for destroying my career. Vince as a master manipulator spun it as Bret being heartless and self-interested using nothing but the facts. Bret went back in 2005 and 2011 for the sake of his career; McMahon is a scumbag and one facet of his nasty behaviour came out recently with all the paralegal suff. Bret perfectly understands the way Vince operates and inveigles people provided he has something to gain.
And the "screwjob" is how the promoter/booker as in Vince McMahon wanted it...that was the whole angle. It's still over to this day...if they had just had Bret do whatever and drop the belt it's really not something we'd still be talking about right? Screwjob was a work, only the few people were in on it. They "worked the fans" and they "worked the boys"... remember Bret is always working.
@@Provos7777 I know, his comment just made me chuckle because he's the complete opposite now. He literally brings up that boot from Goldberg in every interview... Just for the record. I love the Hitman!
Wow I'm so glad I watched this Brett is talking about great matches he had but yet the only one that gets talked about is survivor series....I'm so glad Vince fired...Shawn Michaels made Brett look pedestrian ....Owen almost killed Stone Cold but that's ok come on drama queen
