Brett Hull’s controversial triple-overtime goal for the 1999 Stanley Cup deserves a deep rewind

In game six of the 1999 Stanley Cup Finals, the Buffalo Sabres hosted the Dallas Stars and no one was aware how long of a night they were in for, or how controversial the finish would be. Both sides were seeking their franchise's first Stanley Cup. Both sides had one of the league's best goaltenders in their net. But only one side had Brett Hull.
He was the final piece in a massive makeover the Stars had gone through since their arrival in Dallas a few seasons earlier. Along with Mike Modano, Jere Lehtinen, and Joe Nieuwendyk, Hull was in good company when it came to scoring goals. But tonight, and this whole series, it was tougher sledding thanks to Dominik Hasek. That isn't to say it was all smooth sailing for the Dominator; Hasek just wouldn't be rattled regardless of the weapons he faced. Outside of game two, he was giving up less than two goals per game. The trouble was his offense faced just as tough of a test when trying to get pucks past Belfour.
So in triple-overtime, still tied at 1-1, Hull gave us a moment in history that is still held onto by both franchises - just for polar opposite reasons.
Written and produced by Will Buikema
Directed and edited by Joe Ali
Corrections/errors
5:07 - Sabres were 7th seed, not 6th seed
8:57 - Lehtinen, not Nieuwendyk

It's still crazy to think about the fact that Belfour and Hasek were both drafted by the Blackhawks in consecutive drafts. Most teams go multiple decades searching for a hall of fame caliber franchise transforming type goalie. Some teams have never had one. They got two within the span of 12 months.

The overhead view at 12:31 is really the only 10 seconds of this entire video you need to see. Hull kicks the puck to his stick while everything is outside the crease. In the act of kicking it, his left toe enters the crease. As he's in possession of the puck throughout that play, by the rule in place at the time, the goal counts.

You forgot to mention Hull had blown his MCL and could barely skate, but told Ken Hitchcock that he was there if he needed him. Great coaching move to not only to activate him, but use him. Especially when he did. Hull was straight phenomenal this shift. Stole two passes, won a board battle, stopped a clearing attempt, lifted a guys stick to get Modano enough space to collect the puck, turn then shoot and was Johnny on the spot for the rebound.

They need to do a Rewinder on the Easter Epic. Not only was it four overtimes, but it was game seven, the only game of the night, and the first time the Capitals blew a 3-1 series lead. Another one they can do is Game 3 of the 2002 Stanley Cup Finals. It was triple overtime, like this game, it featured multiple Hall of Famers on the Detroit Red Wings (two of which were involved in the "No Goal" game...you know which ones), and it was the first Stanley Cup Finals game played in North Carolina. Or how about Game 1 of the 1990 Stanley Cup Finals? Longest game in Stanley Cup Finals history and a rematch of the 1988 Finals between the Edmonton Oilers (now without Wayne Gretzky) and the Boston Bruins. There was also a brief power failure that was similar to the power failure that happened on Boston Garden two years earlier.

>"Traded for veteran centers Carbonneau and Nieuwendyk" They sent their recent 1st-round draftee to Calgary for Nieuwendyk, some kid named Jarome Iginla... might've been worth mentioning offhand >_> >"Traded away the Captain's brother for Sergei Zubov" The captain's brother being the unremarkable Kevin Hatcher, Zubov being the greatest Russian D-man of all time, with all due respect to Fetisov and Gonchar. Led the '94 Rangers in scoring in his 1st full season in the league and carried Dallas's breakout/transition for a decade. They cratered after he went back to Russia and spent years trying to replace him before they finally struck gold w/ Klingberg. Hatcher/Zubov was the best trade in franchise history (which includes Lehtonen for Vishnevskiy and the Seguin trade.) >"When Nieuwendyk hurt his knee in the opening round" Well, when Bryan Marchment's goonery hurt Nieuwendyk's knee. We (rightly) complain about guys like Ryan Reaves being in the league but the guys like Marchment, that didn't even pretend to have talent and just looked to injure someone every night, well, I'm glad the league has outgrown that extreme mold of enforcer. >Hasek The best goalie to ever play the game, as far as this Stars fan is concerned. Still the only goalie to manage back-to-back seasons with a .930+ Sv%, and he did in back-to-back-to-BACK years, as part of a stretch of reaching that mark 5 seasons out of 6. Nothing against Roy or Brodeur, they're both phenomenal and influential goalies, but Roy had multiple HoFers in front of him for most of his career and Brodeur of course had the trap; despite playing more games than Hasek, Brodeur faced far fewer shots against. Not to mention Scott Stevens keeping his crease shiny and clean and Niedermayer keeping the puck 200 feet away from Brodeur whenever he was on the ice.

Fantastic work on this video!! I only put it on to see if you were going to explain why it shouldn’t have counted but you did your research! Well done! It is too bad most people will always think this goal shouldn’t have counted but the rules were followed. Once Hull kicks the puck to his stick, his left foot does enter the crease before the puck. This is where most people think the infraction is. The difference between Hull and the countless goals that were called back all season for random players toes in the crease when a goal was scored, is that Hull has possession of the puck and made a controlled move to get the puck to his stick. Case closed! Also congrats on not butchering any of the names and giving the goalies proper credit! 👍🏼

Erik Woods they removed “North” from their jerseys their last two seasons in Minnesota so were essentially the Stars from a branding perspective.

Think it would have been helpful if you had highlighted a mid-season memo sent out by the league in 1999 season (pretty similar to the memo you highlighted from earlier years). A goal had been disallowed due to the "in the crease" rule during a regular season game. In the play, a skater broke away for an uncontested 1-on-1 opportunity with the goalie, the skater coming in from wide. He cleanly carried the puck through the crease and by the time he shot, the puck was out of the crease but one of his skates was still in the crease. The goal was disallowed and pretty much everyone said that's stupid. So the league clarified that if the skater controlled the puck in the crease, then maintained control OUT of the crease, a shot would be legal even if his skate was still in the crease. They essentially changed the interpretation of the rule midway through the season. Cannot remember who the skater was but I have feeling it was a Coyote player whose goal was disallowed. Honestly, there was zero controversial about the goal, if everyone had understood the rule as modified. ESPN and the entire NHL, as usual, did a poor job on every front. The NHL, at a minimum, should have reviewed the goal and then explained why it counted. Had they done that I doubt "no goal" would be something you still hear.

The 2010 Stanley Cup winning overtime goal is one of the most awesome "How they got there" for both the Hawks and the Flyers. The flyers depended on a back up to get there, and even for them to get into the playoffs was insane because it came down to the last game of the season against the Rangers. And whoever won that game would gain the last spot in the playoffs. It went into a shootout which is insane. and so so much more

I remember that game. The problem I had with it wasn't the alleged memo that no one knew about, but the fact that all season long goals had been waved off because of "toe in the crease" where the offending player wasn't impeding the goalie. Seems like we saw loads of goals waved off all year because of that rule. No one knew that the goals would count if it was the same puckhandler the whole time.
