The dirtiest player in the league, a generational talent, and a three-team beef

The Boston Bruins hated the Hartford Whalers, and then the Bruins hated the Pittsburgh Penguins. Once Cam Neely came to Boston, he embraced both, finding a foe in Ulf Samuelsson. The two went at it for years, with a playoff collision leading to Neely hanging up his skates earlier than anyone would want.

Neely himself has stated that "the hit" wasn't the one that caused his injury that later calcified. It was another hit in that same game in which Neely was laying the check, and Samuelsson avoided it. He bruised his thigh muscle on that one. But I guess it's more fun to say it was that other open ice hit.

How about covering the beef between Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso during their brief stint at McLaren in 2007? Or Prost v. Senna?
@patrickracer43
@patrickracer43 5 лет назад
Or Hamilton and (now former) Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg. And let's not forget the blood-fueled beef between James Hunt and Nikki Lauda in 1976, a beef so intense that it involved disqualifications, wrecks, fire, rain and people thinking Lauda had died, and a Ron Howard movie staring Thor
@Dalejr88rox
@Dalejr88rox 5 лет назад
Rosberg and Hamilton would be super interesting because that's a beef that has so many layers. Nico and Lewis were childhood best friends and remained so in F1 until they became teammates, and the pressure of a championship winning car drove a huge rift through the 2 of them so badly that the first thing Lewis did after Nico's retirement was say that Valterri was already a better teammate
@Dalejr88rox
@Dalejr88rox 5 лет назад
Hunt and Lauda wasn't really a beef. The movie played that up ridiculously high, when in reality the 2 were friends and had immense respect for each other. They were even roommates before making it to F1

Fighting isnt a part of hockey in Sweden, that's why we suck at it. I remember when Thomas Holmström first got to the NHL, his nickname in Sweden was Demolition Man because of his ability to stand in front of the opponents goal and take hits and be a nuisance. In the NHL they thought Demolition Man meant he could kick some ass, and Rob Blake among others tried to start fights with him. Holmström of course is one of the nicest guys on earth, like many of us here in the frozen north of Sweden 😁

That was well covered. But remember back then a lot of that "pettiness" was connected to players getting seriously, seriously injured and there weren't a lot of suspensions unless you basically clubbed someone with you stick or hit someone after a goal. Most of that pettiness was from players feeling unsafe and wanting to police that internally. I'm not saying it worked as a over arching system but that is how they felt because they didn't feel like anyone else was going to protect them.

In my opinion, If Cam Neely does not get hurt against Samuelsson, The Bruins may have been able to win the cup In 1991....But as an honest Bruins fan I am sure of this, With the Bruins "Upper Management" at that time being not Interested In spending any money, I think that Cam Neely would have been on any number of teams through free agency In the 1990's....It Is no coincidence that when Cam Neely was at his best, around 1988 to 1991, the Bruins were Finals runner up twice, and Eastern Conference finals runner up once, When Neely was hurt, The Bruins weren't anywhere close to those lofty heights again....Cam Neely's unfairly shortened NHL career was not only a loss to the Bruins of course, it was a loss to the NHL as a whole....He would have had a 15+ year career like an Ovechkin or Crosby In today's NHL....It Is one of the great what If questions, what If Cam Neely has a full NHL career unencumbered by Injury....Anyway, thank you for this post.

I remember when Ulfie played for the Binghamton Whalers, he laid a cheap shot on a member of the Nova Scotia Oilers. The next game between the two, the Oiler's enforcer went after Ulf in warmups. It took the Binghamton police to break it up.

Do a beef history on Yankees Phillies World Series around 2008-9
@patrickracer43

It wasn't really beef, just business, I know because I watched that series, also, I noticed that my team, the Phillies, tend to play AL East teams in the World Series, they played the Yankees, beat the Rays (I remember that series well, as basically every guy in my high school at the time watched the game during our school's homecoming dance), lost to the Blue Jays, beat the Royals (who have never been in the AL East) and I believe they've played both Boston and Baltimore in series in the 1800's (baseball history buffs help me out)

Samuelsson wasn't the missing piece for the Penguins, but arguably their missing piece, Ron Francis, was included in the same trade.

One story I heard about the NHL/WHA merger was that the Boston Bruins were so against Hartford joining the NHL that they were willing to play five home games a year in Hartford if that would force the NHL to in turn force Whalers to either go out of business or be moved outside of New England.

No different to what the Leafs did/are doing. That's why Hamilton will never get a team, that's why there will only be one in the GTA. Being the monopoly in your area is the thing to be. Only reason why New York and LA have two teams is because of their size.

Both players were great at what they did, Samuelssons job was too make the other teams stars focus on him and he was damn good at it and Neelys job was to score goals and he was damn good at that...but i dont think any of them will win a mr popular contest among other teams.

No, Samuelson was a very dirty player who didn't play the right way. Neely was the greatest power forward of his generation. Few players disliked Neely. Samuelson was universally hated.

@@DrFunk-rk6yl "It's funny," the league's senior vice president, Brian Burke, said earlier this season. "There are 26 general managers, and 25 complain about Samuelsson. And all 25 would take him in a heartbeat."

@@hubby78p20 you are probably right but that doesn't mean that he wasn't extraordinarily dirty. When people complain about Marchand I totally get it. He is a complete cheap shot artist but at the same time I recognize he has unbelievable skill.

@@DrFunk-rk6yl no i never said he didnt play dirty, that would have been stupid since Ulf himself always has admitted he played a dirty game because thats his job and he is damn good at that
