Breville Expert Nespresso coffee machine dismantling and cleaning blocked plate

My coffee machine had a problem where most of the espresso that came out went into the waste bin instead of the spout. I tried cleaning the the plate that punctures the pod with a toothbrush but it still did not work. So I took the machine apart to give everything a good clean.
Now the machine works as good a new.
With the amount of coffee sludge I saw, I am motivated to clean it out every 6 months from now.

Thank you so much for putting together the detailed video! One thing to watch out on reassembly - on the top of the 4-clip extraction assembly cover that's removed at 6:44..6:59 in the video, there are two little rotating tabs, they must face exactly to the left of the machine when clipping it back, as visible in that time slice, otherwise the capsule insertion slider will get stuck on them - it has to slide freely back and forth, verify it when assembling. These tabs tend to rotate by themselves when the cover is off, and it's easy to miss their position when clipping it back on.

Thanks for the time and effort in putting these videos up Ken. I was ready to give up and buy a new machine... I watched your first video, "fixed" and cleaned my machine - but not hot water would come out. Watched this version, and realised my error in running the water pipe too high along the top of the unit. This resolved my issue and I can finally have a decent cup of coffee at home again.

Thank you for making and sharing this video. I followed your instructions and cleaned our Nespresso Expert Milk and makes now coffee like back when I bought it 5 years ago. After opening it I realized that rinsing the machine with the Nespresso detergent or with white vinigair will never ever clean the machine from inside out. It was actually kind of fun opening it and cleaning all the old coffee residue out of the machine. Disassembling the machine was easy but reassembling it was a bit trickier for me. You have mentioned the T8H screwdriver which I couldn't find in my tool shop nearby, but I did manage to open with a T9H screwdriver fortunately. Thanks again for sharing your video.

I had the same problem (little coffee in the cup lots in the drip tray) got here via google. when doing this procedure apply some white lithium grease to the sliders and the four wheels ( two black and two blue) this is like servicing the machine while your in there. Also you don't need to remove the base from the machine there's a screw in the cable tidy area which has a semi circle shape around it, leave that one in. the side & rear panels will come off without removing it. also remember to refit the drip tray when testing it as the machine wont brew with it out, I found this to my horror and thought I had left something disconnected lol I only worked this out after disassembling it again and noticing a switch at the back of the drip tray slot. so many thanks for this video it helped me a lot !!

Maybe I had luck, but had the same problem you described. There is a descaling program on the machine by (when machine is off) pressing the brew button for 6 seconds, and an automatic program cleans the machine from the inside. I do prefer your approach once in a while to clean it thorough. Thank you for your explanation.

Hi Ken, Great video, thank you very much! Since you mention to do this on a regular base I have some sugestions. I only unscrew the two deep lying screws of the bottom plate, that’s enough. You don’t need to take of the control switches (selection and temperature). A bit less work every 6 months! I couldn’t take off the grid thingie, cleaned it under a tap. It obviously has to stay connected properly for the machine to work, I didn.t discover how though… ThanX again! Roland

Hi Ken, does your machine keep dripping hot water from the barrel that extracts the espresso? Mine keeps dripping even when the extraction is over or it’s about to extract, and it’s a lot! Thanks for the video, I’ll definitely try to fix mine, since it’s not working properly and some coffee is going right to the waste bin (think the plate is clogged up)! Kudos from Brazil!
@kenkanfix
@kenkanfix 3 года назад
Hi, mine only drips a little bit after extraction but I think that's normal as the last bit of espresso flows down. But if yours is dripping before extraction it might be a gasket problem. Although I have not taken the heat pump apart yet. Good luck with cleaning the plate.

@@kenkanfix Hi Ken, I found the issue. We had put the hose of the hot water function as high as in this exact video. But I noticed in your more recent video that your hose was put into a specific position. By doing this as well, the hot water function works again! :) It might be that the motor of the hot water function does not allow for enough pressure to let the water go that high.

Hi, thanks for your question. When the pod is pressed against the plate and punctures the pod, normally the espresso would flow through the holes in the plate, then down a track to the white plastic.
