The Brewster model 239 fighters of Finnish squadron Llv 24 were highly successful against the Russian aircraft of the Soviet Air Force during the Continuation War of 1941-44. This video examines their actions as the Finnish offensive to retake the territory lost to the Red Army in the Winter War reaches its objectives at the prewar border.

Thanks for this unique look into a nearly forgotten part of the war. The Finns were fierce defenders of their homeland, and used these aircraft in their best altitude for performance.

It was the best fighter there was available for Finland at the start of the continuation war. The pilots preferred it over other plane types then in use.

Gloster Gladiator,Morane Saulnier,Fokker DXXI,thats the kind of planes we had to managed in 39-40.When those pilots sat and fight first time in Brewsters, its no wonder that they gave her nickname as "Pearl of Sky"It is so freaking good compares to those KITEs. Think that 33:1 is accurate.

The ratios were great in the beginning, but were harder to keep up as the Soviets started to catch up a little with better aircraft. Luckily replacements for first line fighters became available eventually to the Finns too near the end of the war.

Trivial information: In 60ies there was war document on Finnish public broadcast channel. One Brewster pilot told they removed protection steel plate from Brewster planes for lower weight and better maneuverability. Sadly, I don´t have another source for this information.

This agrees with what I have found out about the Finnish 239s, that they were as successful as they were due to their lightness compared to other models of the Buffalo fighter. I would love to see that documentary, tho my very limited knowledge of the language would probably hold me back from understanding much of it

@@MarkSeven Finnish pilots and ground personel were very intuitive to use every plane type on its limits.

They didn't do well in the Pacific. The Finns were killing Soviet planes with bi-planes. The Buffalo was some hot shit for them!

Is it true the Buffalo had a kill- ratio of some 23 to 1 ? Making it the MOST successful US built fighter of all time.
@MarkSeven
@MarkSeven 3 года назад
I've seen estimates from 17:1 to 47:1 to one, but only in Finnish service. In US and British/Commonwealth units it was much less successful

It really depends how you examine the numbers... And even then you may come up with rather surprising numbers if you start looking at the different variants - for example should you take look at the results of FM-2 (assuming you separate it from the rest of the Wildcats) you might be surprised.

@@MarkSeven I think that 47:1 ratio applies only one specific Fighter Squadron 24,in finnish it called Hävittäjälentolaivue 24 (HävLLv 24) Brewsters shot down 459 russian planes,own losses are 15,so that 47:1 is pretty accurate.

The finns modified the engine by reversing one of the piston rings, which fixed the reliability problems.
