As the winter of 1941-42 began to set in, ground fighting along the Finnish front died down. Clashes between Finns and Russians in the air continued, and the pilots of squadron Llv 24, flying American-built Brewster 239 fighters, began to encounter newer and more modern opponents on the Soviet side. Nonetheless, they held thier own against the new enemy machines, and established a record of excellence in air-to-air combat that has few rivals.

The Brewster Buffalo really is massively underappreciated. I mean sure, it's no Messerscmitt, or Spitfire, or a Mustang, but it more than holds up against other early WW2 planes. It might behave quite different, but that's not a fault of the plane if the pilot doesn't know how to take advantage of it. I'm not saying it's the greatest plane ever, but what I am saying is that it's a lot better than many people realize and the Finns really drove this point home as their pilots were forced to make the best of what they had instead of just replacing to something suitable and so they squeezed all they could out of it and it turns out the Brewster had quite a lot more to give than most thought when you actually try.

The brewster had a lot of good qualities. Its main downside was lack of speed. It turned well, climbed average and dove well. It was also a stable gunnery platform. It was generally loved by the pilots and it used to be one of my favourite rides in Aces High. From altitude it could challenge almost any plane in the game and survive under massive disandvantage in skillful hands. But because it was so slow, landing kills in it was challenging. Once you lose your energy against 3-4 much faster enemies, they can start to dictate the fight and you basically play dodge ball all the way to the home lines lol. In real life many brewster pilots saved themselves by making a hard dive to the treeline, something that many soviet planes couldn't do to follow.

@@nowthenzenThe Soviets used western lend-lease planes as well as more modern types of fighters of their own in greater numbers later on. It is true that the best time for the Brewster was the early phase of the continuation war, but it could pull its weight if needed also against the more modern planes if used by experienced pilots.

Additional measures had to be thought up to keep the engines of aircraft warm and ready to use while on the ground during winters. The temperatures were exceptionally cold during the winter of 1941-42, even colder actually than the winter war of 1939-40 that became infamous for exceptionally cold weather. On the winter of 41-42 they occasionally reached as low as -46C measured on the Karelian Isthmus.

Fuel was the allied super weapon, allied planes had 100 ,120, then 150 octane fuel that allowed them to turn up the boost to 2.5 bar.

4:30 Finns had ten Hurricane. They got 5.5 wins. In England Hurricane got more wins than Spifire.
@EneTheGene
@EneTheGene 2 года назад

Those comparisons are very hard to do as the conditions did vary a lot. But I remember on of those +200 wins Germans who pointed out that to have many wins you need a lot of enemys too.
@jarikinnunen1718
@jarikinnunen1718 Год назад
@@hurri7720 In North Africa, the comparison is fair. Both sides had the same conditions. German Marseille had 158 wins against England and the best results were 17 in one day. In England, the 109 has a 15-minute limit on combat. In Africa, the same restriction on both sides.

@@MarkSeven By the way: Your series about the Brewster in Finnish service was fascinating! Being Dutch and my family living in the Dutch East Indies, I am very interested in the Brewster... I have spoken with Dutch pilots who flew them in 1941-'42 and didn't hold the type in high regard. But I must say they came ill prepared against some very experienced Japanese pilots flying Zeros and 'Oscars'...

@@Franky46Boy Someday soon I will be getting around to the next part of this series, which will be dealing with the Dutch brewsters in the NEI theater, as far as I know now they used a different model not so well suited to their opponents ' capabilities

You have every ingredient for a success but a wrong formula: You know what you are talking about with extremely well researched topics and you have a good voice to listen to. Man you really and really have to stop reading the text you have prewritten.There is no way that you can keep up the pace when you read the text. After ten minutes I am losing all my focus. Either make a blog or publish as a book which I will happily read or just speak as you would make a daily conversation. You have amazing content but you are shooting in your own foot. Do not forget that a lot of us speak English as a second or third language (mine is third) as you are broadcasting to world not to United States only.

Ah yes you have a point but I must work within my limitations. I am considering a book now that RU-vid work has shown that there are in fact people who find my writing interesting. If you like, send me an email and I can send you my scripts instead.
