Brewzilla brew day
This is the second time I have used Brewzilla. Today I'm making a Belgium Blonde, using a Belgium Abbey yeast and the following grain bill and hops.
Europe/US
5KG / 11.02 lb Pale Malt
1kg / 2.2 lb Vienna Malt
500g / 1.1 lb Cara Pils
Simcoe, Amarrilo and Centennial Hops
(43g / 1.52 Oz Simcoe at boil. flame out 16g / 0.56 Oz Amarrilo, 13g / 0.46 Simcoe, 16g / 0.56 Oz Centennial).
In 5 days dry hope with 27g / 0.95 Oz Centennial and 28g / 0.98 Oz Simcoe.
Target OG 1.060
FG: 1.017 or better

@@joewoodford9428 Do you still use the exact same method in this video or have you changed your process at all since your first brew? Also I see you have the fittings to connect your garden hose up to the chiller, can you explain which bits and pieces I need to make that happen. Cheers :D

@Christopher Theofilaktos , roughly the same method. I reduced the water to 20L/22L as the grain was too high with 6kGs. This means I'm sparging again with an additional 10L of 68degC water. The chiller does not fit the stand hose pipe fitments (UK) I have to use a reducer fitment between the chiller screw fittings and the regular garden hose fitment. So you might want to get some of these in before you get it delivered. The fittings supplied are compression joints and I used PTFE plumber tape to make a tight seal otherwise they dripped (which could spoil the beer). Everything else is pretty much as you have seen :)

Just use fermcap, it drastically reduces the risk of boil over.

Only rehydrate your dry yeast for max 30 mins before pitching, 15 mins is fine - I usually do mine while waiting for the wort to chill :)

Hi HairyJamie, I read on various sites about this. anything from 15mins up to a couple of hours should be OK. Since doing this I have never had a stuck brew :)

Even better method is to rehydrate WITH the wort as its chilled to below 25°c, by the time the rest of the wort has chilled to 20-22°c and transferred to fermenter/aerated its ready to pitch..

Great video, I have seen other brewers use a lot of star san while pitching the yeast, but you didnt use it, or did you use it off camera?

I use Star San to prep all my fermentors and kegs. Have used it for years without issue. I also have short video of making up batch in a 5l water bottle. Glad you like the video !

Hey Joe great video I noticed you were using the clamps on the lid which I believe are meant for the distilling attachments. I’ve been told by experienced users not to use the clamps while doing all grain batches. Cheers!

Hi Krisjan Morrow, I use the lid while in the Mash part of the process, this keeps the heat from escaping. You should not have the lid on during the boil as there are proteins which need to boil out (or something like that). Using the lid during mash is a personal choice.

@@joewoodford9428 agreed but I meant the snap clamps aren’t meant to be fastened down on the glass lid, I believe those clamps are meant for fastening down distilling attachments.

is this a 5 gallon batch? Curious why you don't have the grain in earlier - getting some of the 'step inversion' at lower temps (even though most grains now are fine with 1 hour at 150f (sorry, don't know the centigrade conversion). I also thought the brewzilla had a sparge arm (though one would need to add water as you did) - maybe I confused it with a circulation arm during the boil?

Mash in temp in DegC typically should be in the range of 66 to 68 to get a good conversion. steeping for 1hr 30 mins (90mins) is usual. Step mash can also yield different sugars and flavours. It is all personal choice in the end. Hitting the grain at these temps means you can get some consistency in the final ABV and flavours of the beer.

Sorry if you've been asked this before but you say you use filtered water. Do you treat the water in any other way? I've been adding a campden tablet (Nottingham Water) although I'm not sure if it's necessary. Great video

@ Steph Oakley, We have a LIFF water filter fitted to the use using a CR10 filter, which has carbon filtering and Poly phosphate in it. The PP is used to help with scam and the carbon to take out the chlorine. I've never had the water tested but we are in Norths Hants the guys who brew Wild Weather Brewery beer just use mains water without any filtering, and they are hot far from us. Water treatment is down to taste and the purist in brewing, if you are trying to brew a mimic beer something like Old Speckled Hen, then you might need to add to the water to match the taste. Good video, well done. Been looking at getting the new Brewzilla 35l and going all grain having only done extracts upto this point. Looks like a good bit of kit and well worth the money. Would be interested to see some follow up vids on this brew like a bottling/kegging vid and a taste test prehaps. Have liked and subbed.

caution: I read in the Brewzilla instructions guide or perhaps it was a Kegland video that you never use the clasps to lock down the glass lid. They said those clasps were only placed on there for people who wanted to convert to distillation

@Samuel Heins, Just looked over the Robobrew manual (1/30/18) interestingly there is not mention of the what or how the clamps are to used. They show pictures of the AlcoEngine Pot Still with the claps in use, I'm always a little worried about the lid just falling of so I have clamped them in the past, I now half close the clamps so they are not under max load. I keep an eye out of anything that could happen to break the lid if they are used fully! Thanks for the tip.

Really interesting video and it's good that your 25 litre calibration worked well. The gallon markings are confusing though - 8 gallons vs 30 litres? Isn't this made in Australia? In which case 8 gallons = 36 litres roughly. Am I being stupid? Please correct my maths!

@PhilzVids, interesting observation. As the UK and Europe mostly use metric these days (aka litres) its not an issue as 1 litre is the same world wide. Imperial is a tricky issue, from what I have heard, in the past it seemed that the 'Standard measure" coming from the UK to rest of the world changed on route to the destination country, some have said it was the change in humidity to the stick (yes it was a wooden measure) , but mostly it was tampered on route with so the retailer/seller would give less of the product from the same price :). There are many on-line conversion tables that can show this "error". If you stick with a Litre measurement then convert to you country that should work out. I've not looked as Brewzilla's Gallon markings. Any comments from the guys Robobrew?!

With this kit does it chill on its own with its own tool or you had to use a personal fridge like item to chill it properly??

@Rod Payne, Hi, not to sure what you mean. If you are asking about chilling the wort down after the boil then there is chiller supplied. If you watch the video you should see it as it the stainless steel coil, you need to run cold water through it slowing to take out the heat from the boil until about 25degC. @Richard Winblad, the aroma is amazing! There is no missing steps between the sparge and the grain being taken out. Once the malt pipe is lifted and the sparge water run through then you are good to go with lifting off the malt pipe. All the grain stays in the malt pipe what is left in the Brewzilla is the wort ready to boil. Hope that helps, please think to like and Sub, us really small RU-vidrs benefit from this 👍🤩 Cheers Joe

@Kyle McStravick, If your grain load it small enough you should be able to get away with just the water levels in the Mash. As I was looking to get 21Liters for Fermentation and had +7KG of grain, I needed to add more water and sparging made sense. It might have been wise for Robobrew to make the vessel a little bigger maybe 45 Liters giving more headroom for big grain loads when brewing 21 liters of beer! Great video. Thinking of buying one. Could you let me know your volumes? You mentioned pre boil ~35L, but I seemed to miss how much was in your fermenter (looks like a 15L Fermenter?). What was your brewlength? I'm currently fermenting in a small mini fridge, and want to know if I need to upgrade my fermentation setup if I get this. Thank you Joe!

@BassQuacker, Many thanks!! The volume for Fermenter is 21 to 23 Liters after boil, I always aim to get a little more as I often dry hop. I think my Feremnter is a 30 liter so there is a good headroom and I have never experienced a blow off. great video, i've just got my brewzilla and planning my first brew day - quite the step up from kits! I've also got the digiboil so hoping that'll help - will allow me to have a cupper during the brewday at least! I see you empty into the fermenter using the tap - others I've seen use the pump, any reason between the two? I'm using a fermentasaurus so hoping to pressure transfer into that - but I assume it's a bit horses for courses at that stage. Secondly, I see you took your wort temp down using the immersion chiller to 26, then moved to a brew fridge to 20 degrees - any reason for this? could you not have just carried on with the immersion to reach pitch temp? I was intending to go straight into the fermenter, add the yeast, then set to fermenting temp. Am I missing something?

@Sam Huson, I figured that the pump may pull to much sediment (or the grain mush) from the bottom of Brewzilla. I think either way would work, you don't really lose to much wort if you pull it from the tap. Using the pump you might get some more aeration I guess as well. Thanks for the great video. I was wondering if it’s easier to drain the wort before sparging then after pour the he wort back in. A bit longer job, but less heavy lifting?

@martin holland, depends on how strong you are, if you worried then you can do all this on the floor. Don't forget you are working with 70degC / 158F liquid!

@ Bob Allen, thanks for the question. The stand was originally made for my gravity feed all grain system, pre-Brewzilla! @Arya, OK I look-up my notes. The wood bars are 2"x4", 8 feet in length and I used 7 of them. Length 44" (or inner beam is 40") and Height 50", wide 21". The back section tower is 16" front to back and it is from the bottom 28" up to make the front deck. Rollers are heavy duty casters and put the frame up of the floor by a further 4". I built it by eye so these are approx measurements but will get you close to what I built. You will need some ply or pine to make the shelving areas to put the HLT and Brewziller on. As I'm 197cm tall this works for me you can lower these if you like to make a smaller stand ! This this helped please think to Like and Sub .... Joe, great info and thanks. Waiting for my Brewzilla in the next couple of days. I'll be leaving the unit on the stand and using my double block pulley "sky hook" to lift the malt pipe. I see that when you started the boil at 13.47 the "recirculation pipe" or whatever it's called was reattached after the sparge. Any reason why it's shown connected for the boil?

@Bridie12, The re-circulation pipe is on and the pump is running during the boil , I've used this to make sure the liquid is moving and not burning on the bottom of the boiler. As the heating elements are powerful I was worried this might happen. Not sure if this is effective but it makes me feel happier to do so.

@@joewoodford9428 Thanks I'll have a look at the elements when I get my unit, probably arriving Monday. I've been doing BIAB using an urn (similar to the Buffalo Boilers you get in the UK) and it has a fully exposed element that runs 2400w. During its 10 years the only time I ever scorched it was when I tried to do an old fashioned acid rest at 35 degrees then ramp it up. Of course no conversion had taken place yet but there was plenty of flour in the mash that had settled down onto the element and it burned it on good and proper! With normal infusion mashes, haven't had a problem. I'll report back in due course. Cheers, Mike.

@travis Bacon, width=52cm, Length=110cm, H1=130cm/H2=72cm. This is the frame size, its sat on casters which also raises it up a bit.

Hi Henry, thanks for the question and the comments. I cut down the hose it came with so that it was a about half the length, I then angle this on the side of the malt pipe. You can control the flow with the valve. Don't forget to like and sub !!! Cheers Joe

Hi David, the brewstand is from my past set-up, so not ideal for the Brewzilla especially when lifting the malt pipe up. I'm thinking to run up a simple winch system in the garage using one of the beams as an anchor point. It only that stage which is challenging the rest works well on the stand, you might have noticed I'm fairly tall and its at the ideal height for just about everything else. Good luck with yours, I have just kegged the beer I was making in this vlog, OG was 1.054 (a little bit off, was after 1.060) and FG was 1.012 so I could have mashed out for longer and boiled it longer to get more sugars out. I'm still learning how this equipment performs. The beer tastes great BTW.

@@joewoodford9428 I'm altering the brewstand as well, seeing as I''m coming off a 40L BIAB setup which doesn't need such a high hoist. A double block pulley is dead simple to make and fairly cheap, I just got my bits from a hardware store. sciencing.com/build-elevator-pulley-12062798.html My 85 year old friend could easily pull up that malt pipe!

@@joewoodford9428 Another point, Joe, re the efficiency - the advantage of a pulley system is that you can do a slow lift to form a tight grain bed in the malt pipe then instead of a flood sparge, which can cause channeling (water takes the path of least resistance), I'll be doing a fly sparge with a wee watering can and rose nozzle. That should hunt out the fermentables without leaving pockets of grain that still have useful wort trapped. That's the game plan anyway!

How long does it normally take you to brew a batch from start to finish? Cheers.

@rhythm723 , really depends on the length of boil and mash. Also the temp of the water for the mash. As you bring that up from 4degC ( 39.5F) if pulled from a mains water feed it, has to go from that to 70degC (158F). You could speed that up by pulling from a hot tap or leave the water over night to get to room temp. If you have everything primed to go you could probably do the whole thing from between 3hr to 4hrs (ie pitching the yeast when wort is 22 DegC/ 72F). Fermentation I allow for 2 weeks. 3 days to cold crash after kegging, and then force carbonate (test Co2 carbonation) leave for a further 3 days in fridge and then drink at leisure :)

What's the benefit of hydrating the yeast rather than pitching dry?

@christopher Bennett, Years ago I read a brewing book in that it suggested to hydrate the yeast to help start the fermentation process quicker. For me it is reassuring to see the yeast starting working before pitching. If possible add some of the cooled wort to the hydrated yeast liquid so it has a chance to really get going with some of the brewing sugars in the wort! It has never failed me this way so far. There might be other good reason, further comments from anyone welcome.

Yup very much using the system still, I made a Christmas beer in two weeks ago and it about ready to come out of the fermenter.

Too much audio background noise for me. Why are you brewing outside? One of the big advantages of these systems is the ability to brew indoors.

It was a nice day and my garage is a mess. Background is just the sounds where I live and share my garden with lots of sparrows and other native birds. Sorry you don't like the sound of the British Country side.

@mauro Robles, during the mash I have the pump pipe at an angle with re-circulation pump running. It does create a "whirlpool" but not a massive one. It is my opinion that running the re-circulation does more than the whirlpool effect, that might just be me. Interested in what others think? Cheers Joe

@Bowhunting Africa, As these are imports you need get in touch with someone who does this. It was bought from www.angelhomebrew.co.uk/en/35-robobrew-brewzilla. It’s amazing to me that people still over complicate their brew days with sparging when the whole purpose of BIAB / all in one is to simplify the brew day. To each his own.

Recipe required more water, 10L more, and the BIAB could not hold any more grain or water. Not sure adding 10L of 65degC water is that much of an issue or hardship if you looking for make GREAT BEER :)

The brewzilla is designed for sparging to get greater efficiency from the mash process the same way commercial breweries do.. its not a complicated process to sparge and the results speak for them self..
