Yup. That was me when I was square to square. I hurt my back and shot in the 80s all the time. I have been following Malaska for the last year and I just parred my course three times in the last 10 days. I'm 73, I've been shot in both legs and I have stenosis in my back and arthritus in my thumbs. You don't need to try and be a beast out there. You need to relax and allow the club to release with a grip that emulates the way your hands hang. Then, just swing the club head ala. Ernest Jones. I hit every fairway the last time I played the course at home. I am not John Rahm. I am who I am and I need to forget all the technical mumbo jumbo that does not work for me.

In that opening, Brian must have been talking about the Senior Net Club Champion. I almost watched the whole vid for a laugh, but I can't get that 19 minutes back.

I have been a Golfing Machine student and mentor for over 20 years of my 59 years of golf. This, since I worked with Lynn Blake and Ted Forte for a week down in Georgia. At that time I became acutely aware there were ideological differences in the understanding of the Golfing Machine by its highest "apostles". Granted, Manzella has all of the look and sound of a TGM aficionado. But during the years of his insatiable ego and rapid fire self-promotion there is noone who has done more for the obfuscation, misunderstanding, and down right wrong understanding of TGM. He basically cherrypicks Homer Kelley's knowledge for his narcissistic needs and selfpromotion while being offensive in manner. He is an authoritarian and considers himself 100% right. Just question him on the basic physics of his teaching and he freaks. His damage to any general acceptance of TGM has been palpable and painful to watch.

My dream is to see every top rated social media golf instructor collab on one video and watch them fight it out.

Brian is right on the speed thing. Most instructors today, want to teach how a pro swings, but the average golfer can't move any part of their body at the same speed as a pro, and never will, no matter how many lessons they get.

Lag is the enemy of speed. Mike Austin was correct when he said he is releasing the club as soon as possible. Throwing the club head at the ball. A good instructor takes your swing and shapes it to help you play. Recently I saw a video asking how fast do you think long drivers hands are moving when the club head is moving 140-150 mph? It was 25-30 mph.

Even though Brian used TM during my lesson, it was just to measure progress. Definitely not about getting that “look” of the left arm up the shaft since I came to the lesson handle dragging. Really got me into my left side earlier and really releasing the club with a right hand, underhand toss feel. When I got back to those feels I always hit the ball pretty serviceably.

This highlights something I’ve discovered in my own swing. I can get impact lag if I use a really strong grip but my launch is lower and spinnier, but worse: the image at impact looks good but then my hands flip hard right after contact so my miss is left of left. If I let the club head release a little (NOT a full blown flip) with a more neutral grip, the rate of face rotation is much lower through impact and after impact because I’m letting it release sooner. That’s what people don’t realize: better to release a little sooner like Louis and have a lower rate of face rotation than to hang on to the lag and have it flip over super fast right after impact.

An open clubface is a major problem for many golfers , not because the clubface is open per se, but due to the compensations in the swing that are required to square the clubface . That is why it is so vital to make a takeaway / early backswing in which the clubface is not open or even slightly closed

Just simple projectile physics . There is nothing new about lower swing speed golfers suffering with too much forward shaft lean. There are differences between hitting irons when the ball is on the ground and hitting a driver where the ball is teed up.With irons with ball on the ground ,golfers can not have negative shaft lean or else they will hit behind the ball. With zero shaft lean golfers will not be able to hit the ball in high enough grooves to hit the ball solidly as the iron is designed .So forward shaft is required to hit irons solidly . But golfers with lower clubhead speeds will lose distance if they deloft the clubhead beyond a minimum amount. With a driver when the ball is teed up, golfers no longer need to have forward shaft in order to hit the ball in the sweet spot of the driver. For golfers with slower swing speeds , they should be concerned more with achieving sufficient height without excessive spin and not focus on forward shaft lean at impact

I think, what distincts Sergio Garcia’s lag with most others is his trail shoulder movability and excess of shoulder external rotation likewise with the best and fastest servers of the tennis ball.

I have taken many lessons from him over the years, and can verify that nobody knows the science of the swing any better, *and* how to teach it in plain English. The ideal combination. TGM says that the motion with the right hand is an "underhand" pitch motion. Keeping the left wrist flat after impact is possible if the hands travel around to the left, but as Brian says, not mandatory, according to Mr. Kelley. To his point, at the Pebble Beach Womans Open, 17th hole, many of them, and I have the video, look like he says about the club champions. You wouldn't want the hands to lead the head too much with a driver but in the irons, definitely. I was also a Ben Doyle student, and I can tell you, having taken lessons from a few different TGM AI's, they all have a slightly different take on what Mr. Kelley doesn't call "mandatory," but they are pretty universal in what is.

That’s probably quite a shocker for you to hear that after such a long search of four shaft lean from all these different teachers wouldn’t you say?

Very interesting video. I have a HackMotion sensor. I’m 72 years old and have an 87 mph driver swing speed. The HackMotion graph of my best shots show my wrists going into about 10° of flexion just prior to impact and then extending into impact with about 10° of extension at impact. This impact wrist position falls outside the HackMotion recommended range but seems to work better for my swing speed than having a more flexed wrist at impact. I hope Brian gets into this in future videos.

Too bad someone didn't give the landscaper with the weed wacker a 20-spot and tell him to go on break for 20 minutes. Great tips from brother Brian Manzella. I'd love to get an in-person lesson from him next time I'm back home visiting family.

I’ve never understood this concept. It seems like it kills all the speed that your wrists can produce. When I tried doing this I hit low trajectory stingers with very fat divots. The backspin was wild but I literally broke clubs trying to do this and it was hard on the body, hands and wrists.

The mention of lag always stirs up a lot of interest and I've been playing for 68 of my 80 years and early on I tried to force the delayed hit, but always had trouble timing the release. I went to a small school in East Texas on a golf scholarship and one day in the library I came across a golf instruction book by someone no one has ever heard of - Phil Galvano - his book was called "Secrets of the Perfect Golf Swing" and it didn't take long before I went from a 3 or 4 handicap to a +2. It was so simple and I'll pass it on - just keep your wrists as relaxed as you possibly can - like rawhide thongs - tension is your enemy. I'm sure you can imagine the club at the top, your wrists loose and relaxed, and as your legs and body start the downswing, the club is left behind and your only thought is to complete the swing smoothly while looking at the target, but you have to stay down through impact and finish relaxed while LOOKING AT THE TARGET. You can thank me later.

I don’t understand what he’s saying. Should we try to get shaft lean or not? I used to have a big flip and couldn’t hit my 7 iron over 130 yards not I don’t flip and can hit it 170. I’m new to the game. Only been playing a year. I don’t understand

Someone needs to hold a podcast or something between Mike Malaska and Brian, and have them discuss about how golf instructions could do more harm than good for the top talents.

I believe the flip comes from forgetting to present shaft lean, then hitting at the ball more, less focussed on the target. You have to see (in your minds eye and actually) where your hands should be for each type of shot. Without it you’re dead. Remember how I told you a million times to swing left? Your guest just showed you that. Obviously that is what I meant and tried to explain. Easier said than done for many though.

The only thing id agree is there is a progress in learning golf techniqie and its uses. Even if you learn to use all three techniques (hook, slice, straight) yoi wont be able to score without experience.

4 years ago I really screwed up my swing watching golf videos on youtube. It took me 2 months to get it back to being repeatable and natural feeling. I had to discard all the things that didn't work for me.....lag release after the ball, shallow it out, etc. It is about having fun and getting exercise and being social and supportive to the people you are playing with....score is way down the list. Like the video!

David Wutzer. Not sure I spelled his name right, but took lessons from him at El Dorado in Long Beach in the early 90s. Really good man. Wonder if he's still alive and his son was one hell of a golfer. Some myths are meant to be broken and I think Brian is right on this. It's freeing hearing him say this, I'm looking forward to getting to the range. Makes sense intuitively.

I always return back to Manuel de la Torre. Just swing the freaking club with your arms. It takes care of everything. Hands, wrists, lag. Don't have to think about. Physics does it for you. Golf instruction should just focus on the backswing and then let people get after it from there.

Trouble has been interpreting a 2D footage, either fast shutter still shots or video of a 3D dynamic motion not understanding there is so much more happening underneath the projection a picture provides. One of the worst is the idea of a fixed plane and trying to follow the plane with your clubhead. All positions are relative to the motion a person executes.

The key here is speed. A lot of athletes from other sports bring speed to the table. I’m 31 years old, 5’6” but have 113mph stock driver swing speed. I have to have some amount of shaft lean. But everyone says most amateurs don’t have speed so I’ll have to just agree with it.

Every golf swing video I watch has my head spinning by the end...tried watching one of Brian's (even Monte's) insta videos and have no idea what he is talking about. If it's that F'ing hard I'm better off just having fun and keeping my ice chest full of cold beer.

I've spent 25 years down that road and recently abandoned it...and I have high clubhead speed. I realized with ball forward and a flat to slightly bowed left wrist... You can't even get the club to the ball without some crazy tilt or spin out...and when you read "square shoulders at impact", "stay behind the ball" and THAT?.. I'm not from NY..but fugetaboutit.

Interesting statement about social media expert instruction, but is it wrong? If we accept what he says is true about club champions, we will never know for sure, but he is probably correct, that does not mean that we hackers should not attempt to copy the best players on the planet. It has been proved empirically and scientifically that if we want consistent contact, control of the club face and maximum compression that the club should be leaning forward at impact. The vast majority of professionals do this to some degree or other. Club champions, and hackers, can play scratch golf with non text book golf technique - fact. But the point to remember is that we cannot do it consistently because it requires perfect timing. If we have shaft lean and stability our consistency rating goes up. So should we not attempt to follow the Pros? One does not have to be a contortionist or elite athlete to do this. Just as there is no right way to swing a golf club, only an optimum way, social media commentators should not be described as being wrong. Although it provides could click bait!

You can't teach a lag. Lagging comes from your reaction to your focus. If you are focused on hitting the ball you will never lag. If you are focused on "throwing your club" at the target you will always lag.

Ok so what is the optimal impact position from Brian’s perspective? This video gave me no insight on what to do or what not to do, can we can an explanation? Brian sounds very pissed off? Why is he so mad?

I think each individual player’s mind processes information differently. You need to find the correct teacher for your mind. For example: some people function best with a swing that it’s arm driven and the body follows. Others work the opposite where the arms follow the body (body driven). If the arm guy is working with a body rotation instructor, he will be messed up.

Lag is an effect, not a cause.

Why is there a buzzing sound backing the audio? Please clean it up. The cadence of the teacher is hard enough without the buzz...

Let's not say there is a right and wrong way to swing a club. We are all so different in how we are built and how we can physically move. The right way has to be somewhat based on what you physically can and can't do biomechanically. The art of teaching is getting players that aren't the perfect specimen of fitness and flexibility to play better golf. Being able to adapt from your ideologies regarding the swing is a must if your not working with tour players all day. Lots of great info on the internet including @bebettergolf, but knowing if it applies to you can be a slippery slope. It's amazing that Manzella was able to video every single club champion around the country to be able to come up with his conclusion of the average impact position! What an ego!!

If you want shaft lean it's easier to do with a strong left hand grip

Manzella looks better with that weight off than he has in years and he's never hurting for enthusiasm .Video; maybe it was my computer but for some of this tape , I was getting feedback from another tape ( was it my equipment OR was it in fact on this tape ? ) .

Not only do pros have more speed they are playing irons with more loft and higher cg's. Modern irons I would assume have been designed for amateurs who generally deliver too much loft with traditional lofts.

A lot of stories, but there was not the amount of helpful swing info your videos normally contain.

Who are these instagram coaches? I don’t know any good coaches that teach positions. The good ones teach flowing athletic movements. I wonder who Mr. Manzella is referring to as instagram teachers? I only pay attention to coaches that show students making progress. I’m sure Mr Manzella is a fine coach but he only posts himself blabbering about theory and never posts students swings.

Of all the hundreds and hundreds of golf instructors on You Tube the only one I could understand was Mike Malska. Now I can add one name to the list. That would be Brian. They both understand we are just recreational golfers. We are never going to turn pro. Just keep it simple. Something we can actually do.

I am so bored with coaches and just play on my own and experiment and learn. Each one has their method and give too many instructions

Mr Manzella for all his bluster does not seem to understand the concept of low point and the ability to compress a ball. At the very beginning of the video he demonstrates an iron impact position with slightly negative shaft lean . With this position it is impossible to hit the ball as the iron is designed ; his low point is slightly behind the ball. At best case scenario with perfect timing a golfer will hit the ball low on the clubface with such a low point . Much more likely is to hit the ball slightly fat or thin . There is no golfer in the history of golf , who compresses the ball when hitting an iron off of the ground when his low point is slightly behind the ball . That is not to say that most club golfers would benefit from the amount of shaft lean similar to the average touring pro.Most club golfers lack sufficient clubhead speed to launch the ball high enough and would sacrifice distance with such forward shaft lean. Mr Manzella has presented a number of videos on using the “ Hackmotion sensor”. It seems hypocritical to both advocate using the “ Hackmotion sensor” and suggesting that golfers hit irons with negative shaft lean at impact The problem with trying to learn from RU-vid videos is threefold 1. You need a good knowledge of the golf swing to really understand the concepts presented in many of these RU-vid videos.Just isolating one idea without understanding how this idea is related to the rest of the swing is a recipe for failure 2. Few club golfers possess the athletic skills to really apply these concepts 3. Any golfer needs feedback from a trained eye to make sure that they are not repeating old mistakes and applying correct concepts . Just watching RU-vid videos lacks a trained eye

Recently I've watched Claude Harmon giving lessons on here to average players and never once did he mention hands forward (or backwards) at impact. His main concerns were..Proper set up (including a good grip) good rotation, and weight going backwards and weight going forwards. It was simple instructions that most (if not all) average golfers can relate to and do. Obviously like a lot of things in life, some will do it better than others. Most of youtube coaches relate to (and show images of) top pros hitting balls. Most of these top pros have been hitting 1000s (if not millions) of golf balls since they were 5 years old, and it has no bearing on the ordinary average golfer.

I don't know, but Pete Cowan says the opposite. Who do you listen to.
