It's interesting reading the comments here about Irelands Call being a 'template' or 'meaningless' anthem. I'm Welsh and arguably Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau doesn't have much historical context and yet we still belt it out.

Barry Mc Guigan, (boxer, from the Republic, very popular up north), used to use "Danny Boy", now there's a tune to to rival the Welsh National Anthem.

Total admiration for O'driscoll. He took a lot of flak for what was only a documentary. I'm a northern protestant who is a die hard follower of Irish rugby. I stand respectfully for The soldiers song, I cheer and support all 15 on the pitch, or all 23 in the squad. Infact I cheer for all who play for "my team". Rugby is a united sport and sets an example that others are envious off Although I stand respectfully I do not feel that I should be obliged to sing a song that glorifies the murder of my descendants. I much prefer to sing a song that unites ALL in support of OUR wonderful Ireland rugby team

Why are people from Northern Ireland always so keen to bring religion into a topic? Whether you are a Catholic, Protestant, Muslim, etc the majority of people in Ireland really don’t care. Religion is far more divisive than our National Anthem. Personally I do not agree to the playing of a “second Anthem” at international rugby games. We do not have it in any other sports. Our international football team has players from Northern Ireland, England, Scotland, etc but there is only one anthem played. Players have the choice not to play for Ireland just as fans have the choice not to attend games. Nobody is compelled to do anything that they don’t want to do.

Ireland call is now an Irish Rugby anthem to symbolise unity and respect. But serious question. Why can we not sing Amhrain na bhFiann when playing away games?
@ghostrider13bg
@ghostrider13bg 10 месяцев назад
Well that is the point. What unity? Unity of the Irish Rugby federation? Cool. Why is that impacting the National Anthem? I get the Northern Irish, it's not their anthem, but isn't it a bit crazy for a national selection not to sing it's national anthem because it must go with unity and respect? Play 2 anthems, Irish and Northern Irish. That would be better solution. They are nation too, Ireland's Call isn't their anthem either. For me (and I have no connection with Ireland whatsoever) Ireland call is modern politically correct way to get the problem (national anthem) under the carpet. I played rugby myself, and I can't imagine not to sing my anthem, or God forbid to sing some song which ''symbolise unity and respect''. Play both anthems, respect both nations. Problem solved.
@KR-us9pj
@KR-us9pj 8 месяцев назад
Because it will divide the crowd. It will be obvious who sings and who is silent. Honestly - I am respectful and silent, but ideally, I wouldn't play it at all - home or away.

If BOD was told by his Mam that he should sing both anthems regardless of his views because he is captain, why is the same logic not applied to Rory best? From a South African perspective, i much prefer Irelands Call musically. (I know, not being Irish, i don't get a say and my opinion doesn't and shouldn't mean much). I think people confuse personal meaning and musicality. I think Irelands Call is the better song but its clear the Irish prefer the Soldiers song. You can go on about how you think its musically better but i think you just think that because the song means more to you personally and thats fine. IMO Irelands Call is one of my favourite "anthems", i find it incredibly powerful and beautiful. Most certainly not cringe worthy

Book Worm Im Irish and love Irelands Call . Its a unifying song which allows everyone regardless of their political affiliation to cheer and play as one for "Ireland" in a sporting context. Amhran na Bhfiann or Soldiers Song is a divisive call to war which doesnt represent my vision of a future peaceful Ireland
@lochlainnw
@lochlainnw 5 лет назад
yak it is not a call to war at all it's a celebration of our independence and how hard we fought for it. Yes I agree that at sports matches with them involved another song should be sung aswell, but amhrann na bhfiann should be played at away games too not just home games or else irfu is literally saying they put the minority in the north ahead of the rest of the island which is also unfair I'd love to be inclusive of the orange boys in the north but they're the ones hindering any kind of progress being made
@MrFrankKelly
@MrFrankKelly 5 лет назад
Lochlainn Wallace it is a call to arms. It was written before independence so is not a celebration of freedom. It has some specifically anti-English lines and promotes violence. Ireland has become confident enough of its own identify to take its place alongside the nations of the world as peers. Not every Protestant in the North is an Orangeman and many are proud to consider themselves Irish and that is especially true amongst Rugby fans. It seems to me that a proud, confident, modern Ireland is capable of lowering barriers to Protestants embracing their sense of Irishness without losing anything essential of our identity.
@lochlainnw
@lochlainnw 5 лет назад
MrFrankKelly and also, you missed my whole point. Well done
@MrFrankKelly
@MrFrankKelly 5 лет назад
Lochlainn Wallace What bits did I get wrong? You made two statements about the anthem that are demonstrably not true. You then say you want to include "the orange boys" (whatever that means) whilst stating you want an anthem with divisive lyrics to be played at both away and home games. Ireland's Call may not be perfect but the intention behind it seems right to me. I come from a part of the island where concentrating on the differences between us has resulted in decades of violence and hate. Frankly I've had enough of it.
@lochlainnw
@lochlainnw 5 лет назад
MrFrankKelly it can be a celebration of independence before it was achieved. Remember that most people in Ireland didn't accept British rule anyway. It's not like the concept of independence was born after 1916. It is absolutely about celebrating our independence and it, to me is a fitting tribute to those who died achieving it. I'm not looking to pick a fight but it's just not about violence. Look up the translation if you don't believe me. All it mentions is a 'Saxon foe' and that there's a coming fight. Other than that, no violence. So it seems we both made untrue statements. Also I'm sorry that you have experienced the violence and hatred first hand. But that is no excuse for not honouring those who died to give us what we have today and giving in to a tiny minority in the north, which is what the irfu are currently doing! That's all

There are better alternatives to Ireland’s call, it’s a crap jingle for a country and nation with so much history and culture. A unifying song is needed, 100%, but not Ireland’s call, it doesn’t do our national pride justice and is a cheap imitator. ‘There is an isle’, or ‘Mise Eire’ for example are better alternatives.

I don't agree with National anthems like "Soldiers are We" singing about war and killing people from neighbouring countries. There's just no need for it especially from the British Isles where so many of us have family and friends from the home nations. Although not an "official" anthem another example of a song which does nothing but create a divide is "Fields of Athenry" which talks of a man who was taken from his home country and sent to Australia on a prison ship. 1. Did this song originate from the 19th century when this type of event actually took place? NO. 2. Is this a true story? NO. 3. Was this song written in the late 1970's by Pete St John and is complete fiction? YES. So what purpose does this song serve? It builds up sympathy to a cause from 1845 but more importantly it builds up a resentment of The British!!! Do the Brits write songs and sing them at sporting events about the Russians from the Crimean war? or the South Africans from the Boer War or even Germany from 2 world wars? Proper songs written with music and lyrics? Why would you? Why would you want to dig up the past? No-one alive today is directly responsible for anything that happened in 1845. It's just sad and pathetic and can only cause resentment and trouble!!
