Even Reagan was forced to bring in Bush and his crew to run the policy side of things. We have yet to have an outside who is truly obstructionist; even Trump tried mightily to work across the aisle (and within it), often flexing on issues more than we'd like, but he was such kryptonite to his opposition they were the ones who refused to cooperate. It will be truly interesting to see the same man in that role again, but this time with less than zero incentive to give any benefit of the doubt to anyone not actively supporting him. It seems much more likely that you end up with results like Milei of Argentina, where entire organizations are evaporated if they don't fit into the boss' policy goals, to hell with the screaming amongst the beltway insiders and stringpullers.@@CocktailsConsoles

This guy gets it. Even a too-polite refusal could have been used against her easily --"see, see, she was thinking about accepting it!" I suspect the only people 'back east' directing this guy were named Mitch. But I also suspect this guy was acting autonomously, knowing without explicit orders how his bosses expected him to handle a troublemaker like Kari who wants to upset the election fraud applecart in Arizona that clearly serves both parties (provided they in turn serve the appropriate interests)

That's an example of 'redirection' in rhetoric; the purpose of him saying that was to threaten Kari about going public about his role in this. He wouldn't be given this job if he wasn't trustworthy, and he damn sure wouldn't disclose the methods, manner, or severity of retribution his masters deal in. Oddly enough, he first says "no, they don't operate that way" when Kari says these people will have to kill her to stop her from running. It's just a subtle threat, the sticky versus the carrots offered throughout the rest of the call. The whole point of the meeting was to record her sounding unsure about rejecting either, and use it to blackmail her. At first I was unsure if the DailyMail audio leak came from Kari, or someone in the GOP leadership who wanted this dirtbag removed for failing to stop Kari.

I'm pretty sure it was intentional, and I'm also pretty sure Kari Lake sounding like a DC Comic Hero in her responses is also intentional. Not to say that both were collaborating on the same script, but that both were working a hidden angle to their utmost. Think dirty-cop Noir Detective sweet-talking a Femme-Fatale heroine.

Two possible implications: A) The reputation/career boost for bringing it public is worth more than the bribe would have been (that is, they were offering a bad deal even by their own standards) or B) this sort of thing is business-as-usual, and she's upsetting the apple cart for everybody else trying to set up bribery schemes. Or both, it could be both. Or it could be even simpler and they are, as David Freiheit likes to say, accusing others of what they themselves are doing as a way to preempt accurate accusations.
