30:07 - 30:20 Rythian being colorblind realizing they used red for contraband borders. Wish they had colorblind shaders for this bud.

Looks like you figured it out, but you don't have to (and don't want to) reveal counterfeit goods. The instructions state you must show the number of contraband cards you have successfully gotten past, but you don't have to show the contraband itself. An exception I've seen some players do as "house rules" (the instructions don't explicitly allow for this) is where they negotiate the contraband itself with the Sheriff. This potentially makes for less entertaining play as two players can essentially agree to cheat contraband through with each other while denying others the same deal, but it can be fun the first time it happens, so some people play that on the last round of sheriff negotiations you can do it, as well as bribe the Sheriff to open up someone else's bag. The last round strategy then is to hurt the person who looks like they are in the lead the most. The idea of negotiating contraband is this: you negotiate with the Sheriff that they can take the highest value contraband if they just let your goods through without any payment. If they accept, then you DO have to show your contraband, but -- and here is where the fun comes in -- you don't have to have contraband at all and can in fact lie about it, having all different green cards and still keep them because the Sheriff never inspected. Alternatively, you can promise them they can take any Crossbow (for example) that you are bringing to market, but then have every kind of contraband BUT the Crossbow, meaning the Sheriff gets nothing. Playing this way in the last round of Sheriffs can change things up. Why is this important? The first release of the game has a problem in that never bribing and playing legit every round is actually a very strong strategy due to the end game rewards, so playing either the expansion or some "house rules" version like the above may be in order. Otherwise, most players will realize the optimal strategy is simply to play legit and just try to get the most of each of their respective goods for the bonuses at the end of the game. Of course, this comes with the meta in that if every player plays this way then a contraband-only-on-first-turn strategy may win, but the first round no one is going to be able to sneak large amounts of contraband past a sheriff that knows it's extremely unlikely that a player has four or five of any one good in the first turn of the game. If you get people who have played this game a dozen or more times together, you'll find that the never-contraband or contraband-only-on-first-turn strategy is essentially the best way to play. The end game reward counts for having the most apples, bread, and etc. are worth too much to risk playing a contraband-only or contraband-most-of-the-time strategy, where you find yourself paying more and more to the Sheriffs that are playing the other two strategies and are making more money off of you AND getting those end game rewards. EDIT: The expansion adds set bonuses for contraband, laws which change the game, and Merry Men which also change the game in ways that can really hurt the Sheriff. All of these help make contraband more attractive than legal goods. Another thing I wanted to add, you'll find that with a full group of players playing the never-contraband strategy, you'll see them actually start offering the Sheriff money to open up their OWN bag, because it's advantageous for them for the Sheriff to do so, only having to pay the player for his/her legal goods. This makes for kind of an awkward game.

Play the version with the expansion. I found it really fun with the laws and special orders but you need 6 people.

Just as a note you can't go back on deals

Well the rulebook says "Promises of future favors, which take place after the current inspection phase, are not binding." and "A merchant might offer the sheriff a bribe, which includes Goods in his merchant bag. Of course, he might be lying about the contents of his bag. If he is allowed to pass, when he reveals the Goods in his bag, he need only pay the sheriff the Goods he promised which actually exist! If he promised Goods to the sheriff, which are not in his bag, he does not have to pay those." So no, not all deals are binding by the rules Edit: Of course if you prefer to play by rules where all deals must be honored, there is nothing wrong with that. I'm only saying they aren't playing against the original rules

@@gadrill4285 I'm not sure if there was a slight wording change but in the honor among thieves section on page 9 for reference it says promises of future favors which take place after the current round of play are not binding so for example if you are the last sherif in a round and you make one of those deals it is no longer binding by the time it gets to the other players round in there case however it happened in the same round so it would have still been binding but honestly I will admit that it more depends on how you want to play.
