Hi Steve I really enjoy your videos and find them really informative for myself I am a bricklayer and finished my indentured apprenticeship like yourself in the early eighties. From that I did many things including for the most part foreman bricklayer.however some 25 years ago I had enough of the winters and being out of work because of the weather .I had 3 young boys at the time and had to do something else work wise .Bill's to be paid no brickwork no money .it is a job I really did love but circumstances change things .I have always done bits and pieces as a bricklayer but nothing to major .I am now coming back in to the trade which I know will be difficult for me because some things have changed and I'm quite rusty so i find your videos informative and inspirational for me its lovely to watch a proper tradesmen keep up the good work sorry for the long message stay safe and healthy good luck to yer thanks

What's holding the two skins of brick and block together? Couldn't see any wall ties. Normally 450mm or two courses high and at 900 centres. No cavity tray and weeps fitted.
@SteveAndAlexBuild
@SteveAndAlexBuild 5 лет назад
Patrick White . Come on Patrick do you really think we would build up nearly 20 courses with no tie wires ? You can see a big bucket full of them at the beginning. Also did you watch the whole video because you can’t miss them Exactly where you say they should be plus every 3rd course on the door and window reveals ,? Good job mate another top video. Never seen that method of using a bit of latt as a plumb line. Silly question but what do u use to tack it to the wall?
@SteveAndAlexBuild
@SteveAndAlexBuild 5 лет назад
adam chandler . Hi pal , your the 2 nd person to ask , I’m glad you noticed it as it such a good time saver . I always draw the plumb line then nail the timber about 10 mm away with a Hilti gun nail , about 30 mm long , the ones with a washer which hardly ever bend . The most important thing is make sure the line comes off the bottom of the pin so your pin isn’t in your way . I was shown this when I was an apprentice. Give it a go , you won’t regret it. Just superb to see skill like this. I've done a bit of DIY bricklaying, when I built dwarf walls for my conservatory. I could never get the bricks horizontal in the width and had to tap with a boat level to get them right. Yours are spot-on. I also find it hard to keep the face clean and tend to smear mortar over the joints.

Do you guys not install cavity trays? We have to use stepped DPC, and weep holes at the base of the walls.. also, block dolly’s can allow you to build the blockwork internal using the profiles in the same external position. Or is there another reason you don’t build the internal first? Cools cod tho, thanks for sharing 👍🏻
@SteveAndAlexBuild
@SteveAndAlexBuild 5 лет назад
Nick Rowland No pal we don’t bother with cavity trays at DPC . Up here you only need them if there is a gas membrane or to go over individual periscopic vents . Great work, how does a cavity tray work in a project like this? I always seem to miss it and I'm very interested. Thank you
@SteveAndAlexBuild
@SteveAndAlexBuild 5 лет назад

how do you get away with breaching the cavity with the insulation? you must have really loose building regs.ive always built the inside skin first,then insulation,celotex or similar, with ,usually a 2" clear cavity before outside skin goes up. no damp breach of cavity that way.
@SteveAndAlexBuild

Shaun Coughlan . The fibre glass cavity batts are designed as a full fill cavity insulation . I’ve used it since I was an apprentice on everything I’ve built so that’s 32 years . Tidy work. How come you haven't cut into cavity or installed vertical damp in a cutted slot. Surely you will get damp/ moisture bridging into extension. Other than that nice job

Why don't make your videos at normal speed. That's when you really can see how good a bricklayer is. Running them fast makes any bricky look good .Look at rob songer when he is laying brick the whole video is run at normal speed.
@SteveAndAlexBuild
@SteveAndAlexBuild 5 лет назад
Chris Lavin . I try to put some normal speed in . You can’t show much of an extension in 10 minutes at normal speed . I don’t speed it up to look good . The time lapse helps to show more of the progress . Even on time lapse some videos have an hours footage before they are edited down to a out 10 minutes . Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏼

You should not build the new cavity wall up to existing wall without cutting a 50mm wide gap in existing outer leaf of brickwork, to make cavities continuous. Moisture in outer leaf of brick can track directly inside and cause dampness. This is a basic requirement for building regulation approval. No idea why the building inspector didn't pick this up. The job should be condemned and you should learn how to build properly.
@SteveAndAlexBuild
@SteveAndAlexBuild 5 лет назад
robthefinchman . The building inspector didn’t pick up on it because it’s not required in this area . I’ve been doing this for over 30 years and never had any problems with damp getting in . We used to have to cut out the cavity or do a cut and put a vertical DPC in but not done that for years . I think condemning the whole job is a bit much .
@robthefinchman
@robthefinchman 5 лет назад
@@SteveAndAlexBuild Ok, well if I did that in Sussex, the building inspector would have me pulling the wall down. The building regulations state that cavities should be continuous, also causes cold bridging, the cold external leaf continues inside without any break. So what would you do if a damp patch appeared on the inside?
@SteveAndAlexBuild
@SteveAndAlexBuild 5 лет назад
robthefinchman . It would have to get seriously wet for damp to track over 300 mm to appear inside the room . How about a conservatory . You have a 70 mm profile against the house wall , what is stopping the damp tracking only 70 mm to get inside the room . If our inspectors told me to open the cavity then I would , just because you have to and we don’t doesn’t mean we are doing anything wrong . Feel free to film your work and post it on RU-vid . My point is everybody works slightly differently to others , that doesn’t mean they don’t know what they are doing .
@richiesquest3283
@richiesquest3283 4 года назад
@@SteveAndAlexBuild totally agree with you and can see your a good consiensous bricklayer but how can building control be so different with regard to building regs where new brickwork meets existing it's not like opening up the cavity or placing a vertical dpc is a 30 second job. This looks like a North South divide on this, with the North generally wetter than the South it makes it even more confusing.

skitzo chik . Alex is NOT lazy . He is what’s called in the uk An improver . He has done all his training and college and passed . Now he has to gain experience by just working and learning , it will take many years till he is fully confident . This video was filmed over 2 years ago when he had a lot less experience. Also I work 7 days a lot but I will never make Alex work 7 days a week unless he wants to . Lastly sometimes a job needs to get done to a deadline and when pushed I will take over some jobs purely for speed . Please don’t call Alex lazy as he isn’t and I would be lost without him 🧱👍🏼
