Here I talk about the new watch micro brand Brick Watch Company from Dave Portnoy. I share insight into what could have happened with this brand, the watchmakers, as well as how the watch industry works for these watch micro brands. I am not connected or associated with them in any way, just sharing some insight as someone in the watch industry. I am also not attempting to defend, just share my insight into what could have happened considering the different players in the watch industry.

2400 for a chronograph with a $40 movement is absolutely clinical. Dave knows he effed up, and if he doesn’t, it’s up to the public to not pay for this.

Obviously Brick is not a watch brand for enthusiast's. A watch enthusiast wouldn't touch this watch for anywhere near what Brick is asking. I think that makes it even more of a money grab. If Brick thinks they can get non-watch guys to buy it because these people are just unaware, aren't they pulling a fast one? Nivida, Longines, and Airain are just a few watches (mechanical 2 with column wheels) that you could buy for the asking price of the Brick Quartz chronograph. And for the Brick Mech. 3 hander with date; given 10 minutes I could list about a hundred brands that have just as good as specs and cost less than half the price, easy. No John, Brick deserves the criticism they are getting. Just like when we were all condemning that watch brand buying everything from Ali-Express manufacturers and slapping their name on it, direct selling, and making millions. Remember those clowns? And they sold their company for millions, right?

Well the Sellita one might compete but at a lower price point. Actually half the price point and still a tough sell. I'm really not sure about the chronograph as it mounts a solid Ronda quartz movement, but yes it's true you can buy that one easily at around 40 / 50 dollars per movement. So not sure how the watch overall reached the 2.5 k price

Its a complete clusterf**k. The design, the manufacturing, the marketing, the name. So many wrong turns! At the heart of this issue is an owner who thinks he knows better than everyone else. I know he admits he's "not a watch guy" but my god, he legitimately thinks that these watches are on par with Rolex quality!!! Dave has been led astray by a group of 'yes' men that dont tell him how terrible this business idea was. Whoever manufactured these watches for Portnoy has made a small fortune and they are the only winners out of this.

You keep saying that this watch is not meant for watch enthusiasts, but at 2.4k who is it for? I can tell you right now that people who aren't watch enthusiasts are not willing to pay that amount of money for a no brand watch. People who buy watches fit into 3 categories: 1. they love watches and collect them 2. they love watches as status symbols 3. They need something to tell the time/accessorize their outfit. Watch enthusiasts know that you can get way better watches in the same price bracket. People who use watches as status symbols are going for a Rolex or Patek or AP, ect or Gucci/LV/Chanel (mostly women). For the last category of people it is hard to get them to spend $500 on a watch let alone 2.4k. They rather spend that money on a new phone, a vacation, or an apple watch instead.

@ge48421
@ge48421 Год назад
I don't believe the claims that Portnoy bought some watches off the rack and slapped his logo on it, I think he really sunk over 3 million dollars in this project as he claims. The problem is that comparable non-enthusiast watches available from your local mall or jeweler do not cost anywhere near $2400. These watches are too expensive to compete with the mall watch, and not specced or designed for the enthusiast. Another problem is that the Brick web site is showing mostly renderings of watches, not the real thing, a tactic employed by "affordable luxury" brands like Vincero and Daniel Wellington.

I get that you're trying to be unbiased and present potential reasoning based on your own experiences to explain what might have happened here, but if you boil it all down, the two simplest explanations are that either he went through those middle men you spoke about and got taken to the cleaners at each step or he got reasonable prices and really thought he could get away with a 500% or 1000% markup and people wouldn't care, if the former is true then he really isn't cut out to be an entrepreneur, if the latter is true then he is a swindler preying on those who might be swayed by his name recognition, either scenario doesn't make for a good first impression regardless of whether you are an enthusiast or not

Anyone can go out and purchase a Hanhart Pioneer One or maybe a Sinn 556 to name two off the top of my head spec’d with SW200 movements- and extremely well regulated at that. You could buy either watch, donate to Dave’s charity and still have money to spare. His plan to donate 20% to his charity is commendable, at least taken at face value, the sales will have to come from outside the community of watch enthusiasts it’s just that simple. The is very clear that he’s not a watch guy. The watch industry is made up of people who eat, breath and sleep watches, it’s incredibly competitive. On one hand he claims to have done his homework, slaving over decisions, trying to get everything just right. On the other hand, he claims to be an Ingénue who’s catering to people who can afford to drop ten grand on a Rolex, but would rather drop 2500 on a Timex. Except Timex is making more interesting watches then either of these right now. I hope his charity, assuming it’s legit and run well- truly getting money to small businesses, I hope it does well. I assume one can donate without purchasing one of these watches. He’s not a watch guy, he’s not an enthusiast by his own admission, so it’s hard to imagine this venture going very far regardless of what he’s brought to the table. He’s not a guy who gets nuance. Watch his pizza reviews. There’s no surprises, it’s a slightly burnt pizza with cheese and tomato sauce….. any derivation and he’s out of his comfort zone, he doesn’t get it. That guy running a watch company, that’s never going to be a good fit.
