Dave Portnoy, founder of Barstool, just came out with a watch company called "Brick". Since Brick opened it's digital doors though...it's been roasted. Cheap movements and cookie cutter designs set the watch world ablaze. To make things even worse...people quickly found out where the watches were made. We'll tell you more about it in the ol' vid.

Someone actually did find a catalog from American Watch Company. Their white label watches are priced between $100-$250 per unit. I suspect that Dave paid a little more for the custom designs. They're still not worth anywhere close to $2,400.

When I think of a high quality, luxury but not overpriced watch, my Sinn watches come to my mind. The watches feel really great on the wrist and I always appreciate to wear a quality watch that I have earned. Would be really interested what you guys think of this brand. Hopefully I haven’t missed a review, if you have don it already.

I think the criticisms here are objectively good. It is worth pointing out though, that the "watch community" is not everybody who wears watches, or even most of the people who wear watches. I don't think his target market are the people arguing online whether Omega fanboys are worse or better than Rolex fanboys.

Got to say you’re WAY to generous on your review of the Brick, after seeing the Nomos. I think the Brick wouldn’t be under priced at $500 and would be significantly over priced at $1000. Not even in the Hamilton league, let alone Nomos. Look at what Smiths gives you for under $500…And to top it off they’re asking for orders based only on computer renderings, so you can’t even see what the designs will look like in the flesh. And $2400 for a unseen Ronda quartz, YGBSM!

Dave just seems like a simple guy. So I can see it sort of being swept over that that's not the important part... BUT... To the watch community who obsess over details... It's a THING.

I bought a brand new Oris Aquis 41.5mm Calibre 400 from an AD for $2500 out the door a couple months ago. No way I ever consider this watch over the Oris....or really at all, but you brought up Oris 🙂

Great video guys. So on point in this review. You give great points of comparison for both Dave and all of the entry level buyers trying to u defat and what’s different. I’d say it a $500-800. At most $1k. But one of his advertisers may have saw that as a affront to their market and he did a price review. But so many watches in that range. I would not be looking at that watch for that price. It’s not bad it’s just overpriced. But he may sell because he has a great following🤷‍♂️

Honestly it’s more than a little embarrassing that Dave is so off the mark. Competing against NOMOS with lower quality and higher price point is just wrong headed. Still, as a photographer I see a LOT of guys wearing expensive crap on their wrists. Unfortunate that those that don’t know are more than those that do. 23:20 That section is a mess. The mechanical movement part is unnecessarily confusing. “Well if these are mechanical movements, then what are automatic movements?”. The quartz section is just factually wrong, because “solar” and “kinetic” movements in this context are also quartz movements. AND that is a picture of what looks like a Rolex movement. I recognize that rotor.

$2,400!!!!!! Looking at it I honestly thought you were going to say $250 for the date and $350 for the chrono, Now I know what the movements are I would say $900 for the auto and $500 for the quartz. But to be honest, it is so bland, I mean, BLAAAAAAND! But $2,400, man, you could get a real watch from a real watch company for that. slightly used your into a used Baume Mercier mechanical chrono or date for the same money, from a proper company. As for the guy. I am British, his name and company mean absolutely nothing to me so his market is narrowed to just the US but did I mention, BLAAAAND!

Yikes, there are about 50 brands I would go for that pricing....and 50 more used.....Ball, Sinn, Squale, Casio Oceanus, Grail Seiko's, Fortis, Damasko, Marathon.........or just get a Squale and a plane trip to the factory for a tour.....or a Hamilton Khaki King Day and plane ticket plus two week bungalo rental in Dominican Republic on the beach....

You can get a wise adamascus for 600 it’s has miyoto 9015 904l stainless sapphire sandwich more proven and get better packaging and quality control I would guess , in short you can get watches better in every category for a quarter of the price

A quick search turned up that exact Ronda 5040.D quartz chronograph movement for sale on eBay for $45.95. Lol. This guy totally doesn’t get it. Even a “Top Grade” SW200-1 costs less than $300. These must be some crazy cases and bracelets that explain the high price tag. Oh wait, they’re just 316L stainless…just like a $250.00 Seiko.

I totally agree. I'm a Dave Portnoy fan, but I'm not spending 100% more just for a name he represents. Nomos exists and you have to account for that if you want to compete in that price. Otherwise, you are just hoping you hit the very rare and very random "super high demand and we don't know why" lotto, I can't see how you make any impact in the watch world

For 2500 dollars you could get a Tissot PRX chronograph with an automatic movement, and a Hamilton Khaki Auto on a bracelet with an 80 hour power reserve… could have a pair of quality Swiss watches with incredible value for money and mountains of heritage and history surrounding the brands. I feel like Portnoy’s attempt at generating some sort of blue collar appeal to his brand is a disingenuous effort to create some niche in the watch world that has already been filled by multiple companies with well over internet 100 years of history behind them. He also was being pretty insulting and condescending to “watch nerds”… who would likely be his customer base anyway with that price range and lack of brand recognition. Idk why so many people love this dude anyway. Seems pretty obnoxious.

It’s actually 20% of proceeds that go to the brick by brick fund. That’s a pretty decent chunk so the philanthropy is a large part of the decision to buy this. I don’t think “the watch community” is his target. It’s largely people who are unaware of the value proposition

There’s zero shortage of the kind of watch Portnoy claims to have been intending to create. There’s lots of tremendous options around 2-2.5K. Hard to imagine he couldn’t figure that out before setting off on this venture. He claims to know pizza- does he own a pizza shop? He’s proud, not to be a watch guy, that’s fine, until you try taking one to market.

It is indeed much more simple than people explains: when you sell a watch for more than the price of its constituent parts combined, there has to be added value for the consumer. In established brands that tipically is a mix of: brand recognition, propietary design and added features over generic components. Dave P. thought that his persona was the added value that makes the brand and therefore the 3x mark-up was justifyed - he received his lesson.

Perhaps a typo? They meant $240 and once it was released they thought just go with it. You were kind in your review and that was nice. This was a clearly a swing and a miss, but live and learn. Never thought of Rolex as an earned watch, it works, personally look at Patek or Lange that way. Rolex is kind of on every wrist around me in NYC or Boston or Wellington, kind of a dime a dozen watch at this point. Love Nomos, that was my first “real” mechanical watch. Wasn’t expecting much from Bar stool sports watch, Brick watch delivered on what I expected a generic rebranded $500-1000 watch for way to much money.

I know it's not in the same category of luxery type watches, but for value I'm gonna buy something like a Yeam before something like this and I think a sport watch could have been a better idea. This doesn't even translate to his audience, I don't see his audience wearing this watch.
